To suggest Sydney doesn't benefit from salary allowances is just silly.

They are the only team in the AFL that hasn't bottomed out. In 11 years they've made the finals on something like 9 occasions and finished 11th when outside the 8.

We don't realise the talent they have because their players get little or no press here at all. Good luck to them, they suffered as badly as anybody, but the AFL know that they, and Brisbane can't afford to hit rock bottom - simple as that.

What they do if Brisbane continue their fall will be interesting. Will they bring back the priority pick? Salary cap extras??

They could easily have 5 years of pain ahead.

There are many reasons not to forget Black Friday in 2002.

Losing the Draft Picks is not the main reason why we should maintain our rage.

It was the way the gutless, vindictive and hypocricitical turds on the AFL Commission and Executive shafted us.

The Commission hearing that evening was a farce - the results and penalties were pre-determined.

And let me add, if the AFL justify the extra salary cap room due to the extra expense of living in Sydney then each player should have access to that money. Each player should get their playing contract plus the allowance. That means each player gets X amount for playing and X amount for living in Sydney.

The cap would've helped Hall. It admittedly also helps keeps their players, that may be more of a key here, but , premiers or not, their talent level is not that of Brisbane when they won those flags. Other than Hall, they did not recruit suoerstars from other clubs. Their draft picks are down the list. Scheider and Buchanan for example, players who have done great for then, are picks in the 50's/60's. They have been very clever in their recruiting under a coach they'd "die" for and get the absolute most out of their ability (oh how I wish......what would a Roos do for us).

I think what Monsta says it pretty much true. The state that the playing list was left in in 2001 was deplorable. Black Friday compounded the problems and set us back 3 years.

The fact that we have a team list with 8 100+ game players compared to Collinwoods 17 speaks volumes for where we are and how far we've got to go.

Replace our 8 least experienced players with 100+ players and see the difference - more stamina, strength and ability.

You can't buy experience you can only wait, and unfortunately, there's a lot more waiting to do.

And God help any victorian team trying to tempt Jude Bolton home.

How good would Bolton fit into our team right now???

We weren't far off a flag in 2001, as we were in 2000 & 1999. We drafted very badly in 2000/2001, which affected us alot more down the track than black Friday did. We got almost nothing out of those drafts. We, ironically, probably did better in the draft 2002 and 2003 than the shocker of 2000 & 2001, more though dumb luck than anything with a couple of good down the list picks in 2002 (more picks would've been nice) as well as getting Walker and Stevens (PSD) in 2003. 2000/2001 was a bad one in regards to drafting and affected us the worst. We got rid of them in the end for the re-treads of 2003, most who have since left. Like jumpimg out of the frying pan into the fire hence our lack of experience now.

Duke and woof you have no idea about the cost of living in Sydney Compared to living in Melbourne as you would have never have posted such crap.

The 15% that sydney recieved in additional salary cap payments would not have touched the sides of the out of pocket expenses that the players moving here would have occurred . Every thing in sydney is more expensive from food to rent to petrol road tolls rates water electricity car rego etc etc etc .

we recnetly looked at transferring a manager from our Melbourne office up to here to buy a house equivalent to the area and the one he is in now there was a difference of about $300K .

so before you go and post garbage like this that Sydney have benifitted check your facts because I would say if you looked at the sums a player in Melbourne would be far better off

But however - Brisbane thats a different story altogether

very good point about the cost of living, the only question is whether Adelaide clubs should have a lower salary cap due to the lower cost of living there?

We've had this discussion before, SB. Although I do agree on the cost of living in Sydney being much higher than in Melbourne, we will have to agree to disagree on the impact the extra salary cap has had on the Swans.

As I said, good luck to them, but they are able to offer Barry big bucks, and let's be honest, he alone is the reason Sydney won that flag, no??

If I had the time I'm sure I could put together a spreadsheet on the cost of rent per annum in Sydney v Mel and multiply it by the 40 players on the list and I bet it would come in well under $600,000 they were allowed  .

With-out the Swans player payment structure, we wouldn't know the affects but let me tell you one thing that I know is gospel - Sydney offered Kosi $750,000 for 5 years last year - pretty hard to match that, huh (I only know this because I have links to his management).

So although he didn't take the offer, it kind of makes it hard when you're in our position to lure a big name.

Everyone on here keeps saying we are ordinary becuase of black friday.. the scary thing is it should not be affecting us yet. WHilst Goddard, Wells, Mclean\Sylvia would have been great pick-ups.. they are still 20-21 and would not be carrying our team into the finals. Where we have been let down is in the draft where Sporn and Wiggins were our two First rounders....2000 draft.

That year not only did we have Pick 4,11,15 and 31. Whilst it may be great to look back in hindsight we drafted Livingston, Sporn, Wiggins and Blake Campbell. Compare this to the following players that went after our various picks...Motlop, Scott Thompson, S. Burgoyne, K. Cornes, D. Kerr, A. Mcphee, M Coghlan. Now whilst it may be great saying all these wot-ifs.. but players at these ages are the ones that SHOULD BE influencing our side now... However, 3 of our picks are constant Bullant stars and the other is prob playing country footy someone.... Then there is the SUPER DRAFT of 2001 where we traded away our first round pick and second round together with Porter for McKernan... but dont get me started with that....

Anyway.. thought I'd raise this as I am sick of ppl blaming Black Friday.. the affects of that are still to come....

Been a combination of things including 2000 , poor recruiting, poor trading, salary cap cheating...yeah we cheated and got caught and had to pay the price and thanx to Jacks relationship with the AFL it was severe with a long non parole period...Parkin, OSullivan, Brittain, Kinnear, Jack E...you can blame them all..even Simon Wiggins, Livo but it isnt fixing the problem...I want to hear solutions about how to rescue the future not dwell on what might have been...

Dingbat, If you look at what I wrote "Each player should get paid their contract for playing and then each player should get the same amount for living in Sydney. If the AFL justify the extra 15% due to living in Sydney and that means Sydney get an extra 1 million dollars in their salary cap to pay players then the maths is simple. 44 players divided into 1 million means each player should get $22,727.27 for living in Sydney.
Do you understand this at all? Have I made it simple enough for you?

Don't call ME dingbat - numb-nuts  .

Your argument is with SB. He's too busy right now with his head up his arse to talk - he doesn't get what I say and that is that I don't beleive the extra funds go through the system to ALL players on the list and not just the top 6 or 7.

I understand his argument and that's why Brisbane were a lot more dominant than Sydeney over the last few years - but still they have been very consistant over the last 10 years.

The fact is there will never be a level playing field if all clubs are on different salary cap structures.

I've never been on the side of censorship because I believed that people were able to convene their own disputes... guys like Synbad and verbs are capable of playing nice and adding interesting (yet heated) debate that is often (though admittedly not always) interesting to read.

But these days.... these guys are just not.

I'm sorry... I don't know what it is, but there are just a lot of tools who post on TC these days... they're not interesting, have nominal intelligence and are incapable of lifting their game to the heights of our more intelligent thinkers on the game like BV and, to a lesser extent, Dannyboy ( )

Mods, should step in and start being mercenary. if people don't like it they can @#$%&! off.

The site is worse now than its ever been... and its not because of the content... its because of the wave after wave of bad posters. Synbad might be a bit demonstrative but he can also lift his game and has real insight into teh game... which makes his compelling reading.

these guys know nothing, provide nothing, and alienate people.

I don't want to name names, but I suspect the mods know who they are..... just start pulling the trigger... and warning people and pulling posts. If they don't like it they can rack off and leave people of intellect to get to the bottom of the issues and find solutions..

thats what these sites are about.... feeling disempowered about something we love, and trying to position ourselves in the mind of the club... to consider elements and agree on good outcomes. Its about learning from people in the know (Synbad), people who are scholars of the game (BV), and people with good ideas who can articulate them in a way that doesn't insult your intelligence.

I see this site as a kind of socratic utopia...... Socrates wouldn't tolerate idiots and neither should we.

I'm not saying ban all idiots...... I'm saying the slightest infraction of decency toward our fellow man should be deleted and warnings issued.

Tyrant, I'm just muckin around. I realised woof wasn't talking to me, and that's why I called him numb-nuts - it's a term of endearment :) .

As for the comment about SB with his head up his anus - I appologize, I was a little frustrated due to not winning any games.

Sorry :( .

Woof get it through your head the cost of living is far greater in Sydney than it is in Melbourne- Wether sydney chooses to pay all its players that same allowance or wether they spread it over a few and others miss out does not matter because in the wash up if they paid all the extra to the better players and not to the lesser likes their quality of lesser likes would not be as good.

Sydney won the flag because they have a commited group of players all prepared to put in and a coach who is forward thinking .

Not because they paid more money to their players . You can pay then what they want but they still have to perform. According to the AFL we were paying our players over a million over the cap . Did we win any flags because of it.
