1.6 million!! (4 x $400 000!!!)

but bugger all of that - it's far more important that we keep all of our home games in Melbourne. For one thing, there's all the tradition of playing home games at the oval that's been our home ground for just over 1 season, and it's not like it would increase memberships in one of the dryest Carlton membership areas in the country...

And it's not like our financial position's worse than Fitzroy's just before they were forced to merge or anything...

end of Rant - obvioulsy it's an absolute dream of mine to see Carlton playing ANY premiership games in Canberra, let alone home games!

The only reason we'll play there is if hell freezes over and that would still be warmer than Canberra.

You forgot:

'Because I live in Canberra'.

Can't think of any other reason really.

Of course, we could relocate entirely, to wherever the AFL would like their next franchise. That way we could make a fortune, like Adelaide are doing.

Maybe we could merge with Adelaide. 50,000 members, huge profits... I mean, it's not like we'd lose our soul or anything by playing our games away from the city we've been playing in for well over a hundred years...

Actually, the 'success' of the Kangaroos experiment with Canberra should be enough to convince any AFL administrator that Canberra (like Tassie) is a dead zone.

Of course I worry about losing our soul.

Without it, we have nothing. People don't fork out for memberships and brainwash their kids into supporting the club because it's a rational decision.

Tamper with the soul of the club and you're tampering with the very reason for its continued existence.

If you think that's worth doing in order to chase a quick buck, then you're mistaken.

Canberra, doesn't it snow up there. Campo would be pissed off leaving Carlton knowing that, image all the downhill skiing he could have done..

Rather play at the gold coast.

Sorry, but nothing could be more "Soul Destroying" than moving our home games away from PP. If we were willing to do that for a quick buck, why not move home games to Canberra?

In the sense your talking about, the Soul of our Club evaporated along with the tears of the Carlton faithful there at the ground at around 4:56pm on the afternoon of 21 May 2005.

Is there now then much difference between moving 5 miles or 500 miles away from the Heart and "Soul" of our Club??

Roos now going to Gold Coast - that's why I'm firing up again!

I've gotta say I would love to see Carlton play in Canberra. It would actually be alot better for AFL development IMO than sending the Roos here. As for the "soul" issue, in this day and age of a national competition I'm not so sure. I am wary of the longer term future ramifications of playing home games outside of Melbourne. Will it be so easy to stop doing it if and when we get better?

I'll sit on the fence for now. :|

Again, how did it work out for the Roos?

Answer: so poorly, the most perennially cashed-strapped and supporter-less club in the land even abandoned the place.

They shifted games up there, got no extra members and still struggled for sponsors. Next stop, Gold Coast. Then where?

And THIS is supposed to be the model for the Carlton Football Club? Please.

yeah im with you camelboy i think it would definitely be great for our club if we could sell 3 or 4 home games there a year bu as someone said in a different thread we've already sold our home games to TD and we'd only be able to sell our home games to canberra if we wait another 4 or so years but by this time we'll probly be a team pushing for top 4 and it could really hurt us if we lose games as a result of playing interstate st kilda is a prime example they have to play games at launceston and they are lucky there are probly lucky there are no tassie teams to whip their butts. im balancing steadily on the fence for now.

Soul is fine, but the point to remember is that when you move, you lose it.

What happens then is it's replaced by something not really as good, called a "Relocated Soul", also known in its abbreviated form as "R-Soul".

$150 * 5000 members = $750,000.

This is the amount we could make by getting 5000 "Melbourne" members back, in just one year, purchasing a silver membership. I would say that makes more sense to me, wouldn't you rich? I also thought that was "one" of the major reasons CFC left Princess Park, to increase membership via Telstra Dome, since our Melbourne people couldn't get into Princess park.

We have lost plenty by leaving Princess Park, but it won't be half as much as it would be, by turning our back on our biggest base.

Will be interesting to see our administrations movements.

We currently play 5 away interstate games. Let's drop that to 4 and "sell" the other game interstate. Pretty sure Collingwood have that "arrangement".

Rich I have a question for you:

Why don't you just relocate to Melbourne then you could watch us all the time?
