I've been thinking a bit about tanking, and how if we'd won just one more game last year we wouldn't have Kennedy.

I'm against "tanking" as such, because I would prefer it that we won each week, but the structure of the AFL and standard of our list make it pretty that that's the way forward.

My question is, if you could somehow make a wish that "Carlton would never lose another game again, ever"...would you do it?

It would be good for a while, maybe a year or two, but after that, do you think footy would become boring.

Is it better to have the lows to fully appreciate the highs?

yes on a different note i'd rather carlton have equal most premierships with 16 then carlton has 40 and the next best has 5, that's why our game is so much better than soccer.where there's only 3 or 4 teams who have any chance of winning a premiership in their whole history.

No we possibly might not have had Kennedy. We definately would not of had Marc Murphy.

Without disappointment you can't appreciate victory.

Quoted.

For.

Truth.

which is why we're going to enjoy our next premiership more than any before it.

carlton are that bad they dont need to tank.
they lose because they have the worst list in the league and a coach past his useby date.
no doubt carlton is worse than Essendon*, but the bombers have many injuries.

What's more, the foundations of the "glory years" through the 70s and 80s were laid in our darkest years (to that time), of the Fifties and Sixties.

I'm not sure that we're laying the foundations for our next Golden Era, but at the very least, we're hopefully ensuring that we don't have to sink to the depths that we've witnessed lately.

I'd change the wish slightly...

"I wish that Carlton could be guaranteed to beat Collingwood and Essendon* everytime they meet. The other games I'll take my chances."

Last year, and I hate using the term, when the "rewards" were much higher (ie. two top 5 picks) it was a little easier to deal with. This year though, there's nowhere near as much incentive to tank.

Equally drafts still have some luck attached to them. Obviously the closer to #1 you are the more likely you are to get yourself a gun, but exhibit A is Kade Simpson, exhibit B is Brad Fisher and exhibit C is the other bloke, I think his initials are BG.

We've clearly got what we wanted with Marc Murphy … an ready made impact player for our midfeld. That other guy, may well be superstar, but it's not a very long bow to draw to say that if we did get him that we'd possibly have some disappointment at his progress, all things being equal, Mind there's not be too many upset at the progress of the DW character.

Anyway, that's enough waffle.

Murphy. Good.
Kennedy. Good.

At the end of the day, that's all that matters. Well done to Wayne Hughes and his recruiting buddies.

I reckon there are a couple of contenders.

Unfortunately the method by which we resurrected the club in the 60s is not longer available to us now.

A bunch of progressive people led by George Harris paid a lot of money to attract Ron Barassi to the Carlton Football Club followed by the recruiting some the greatest players the club has ever had by fair means or foul (just read the history on how we got Jesaulenko, or how we took the fat younger brother in John Nicholls).

Its the Draftway or the Highway now and the only way you are going to get the quality is with a low number in the draft picks.

But Kouta hope the end result of another golden era is the same - but thanks to the AFL these golden eras wont last 20 years like they used to, just ask the Brisbane Lions.

I take it then that no-one would enact the wish as stated.

It's an interesting concept.

We all want Carlton to win, but we wouldn't want to know week in week out that they are going to win.

Part of enjoying success is the process of getting there and I think your last line sums it up for me....watching the younger players develop, the drafting process, picking the right kids, right coach and having all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place makes it more pleasurable when you do win the premiership...if you are not challenged in life you dont keep improving and we all need stimulation to keep life interesting...

That's what it felt like in '95 for me. Everything just came together perfectly.
