Disappointed in some ways, as discussed by others. But equally disappointed at how far we've fallen. He's one of the best players to have played the game in his era and most of us want him pensioned off. Maybe that's a sign of how far we've come as well, in that we're looking forward to the future.

It's going to be sad the day we no longer have a Carlton premiership player on our list, regardless of the circumstances.

You lot need to get over the fact AFL players are paid very well, not just Carlton ones.

"We have to spend the cap minimum" is a massive cop out. There are smarter of ways of spending the cap minimum than giving it to a 34 year old. Back-ended contracts get discussed quite a lot but you seldom hear much discussion about front-ending them.

If we have to use up cap space I'd much rather pay Simmo or Murph an extra $200K a year now in return for them being on a discounted rate in 3-5 years time (for example). They get to keep all the interest they'll earn on the money by getting it early (current value of $ > future value for those who have forgotten their high scool math). And we get enough cap space in the future to make a play for an elite player just as we'll be contesting finals.

Camel, when Carlton was strong we took care of our players, gave them a shot at finals etc, paid them and then told them when the end was nigh. Calmly but truthfully. Some retired, some went elsewhere - the club moved on and remained strong.

In my life I reckon I've only seen two champions play on too long.

One was Big Nick who should not have played in '73

and the other was Doully (actually that's not strictly true, Doull could have played he just shouldn't have been put on Dunstall).

In both cases it was understandable - we were shooting for another flag and they were champions -

HGas anyone noticed at the club we are at the @#$%&! bottom of the ladder not the top!!!!!!!!!! -

Now I add a third.

Great player, unbelievable at times, but not since the knees.

Worse though - he is a symbol of all that was not was is or will be. Its not the money its the symbolism that shits me.

We cannot sell this club as vibrant and moving forward until we are vibrant and moving forward - this smacks of neither.

In regards to Doullie, although Dunstall kicked 6 on him in the GF, Doullie held him goaless when we beat them in the Second Semi final. Admittedly though, he was on his last legs.

The only reason, I'd imagine, that Kouta is staying on is for leadership purposes for the youngsters. We don't have a great number of leaders around the club.

Especially when everyone here wants to trade all our experienced players.

It is quite ironic that Kouta, Hird and Archer will play on in 2007. They play for Carlton, Essendon* and the Kangaroos which in my view are the worst clubs in terms of embracing drafting kids in AFL history.

I'm willing to give him a chance next year...

Is it 315 k including incentives like no. of games played or in event of a no show consider this as direct contribution to the retirement fund ?

....and the only 3 Vic clubs to taste September success since Hawthorn in '91.

I'm a bit ambivelant - I think we should play him for 40% of the match time so he can have an impact rather than relying on him to carry the team.

Our mid-field should be strong enough to run out most of the game and bring Kouta on to give those youngsters a breather.

I think you can still claim a youth policy yet have a veteran, can't you?? :?

The contract is performance based.

You will see Kouta in the forward line alot more next year.

Any idea on what constitutes being worthy of "performance"...?

He should have retired and given that senior list spot to a younger player.....the club should not have offered him another contract.
