I am prepared to cop the stick from some of you guys over this post, but what's new?

I think back to when our club was proactive, when we made the ballsy moves, when we were the innovators of the competition, when we were the envy of the old VFL.

I know this national competition is an entirely new era and we have to firstly catch up and fall in line before thinking about doing anything outside the square. When we appointed Sticks as skipper, plenty of die-hard Blues supporters thought the club had gone mad giving the holiest of holy roles to an unproven interstater. Not only did Sticks show the necessary willingness and nous to learn whilst on the job, in time his passion and leadership shone through. We need a similar emerging player like sticks right now, not in 2-3 years time.

So who fits this role? Who is capable of leading by example for the next 10 years or more? Who will work with the great kids that we have accumulated and foster the newbies we are gunna pick up this year. Who will be the shining light to these Baby Blues?

This mystery man must be a Ftness Nut. He must be able to play all over the field. He must be able to plug a hole in the Defence by spoiling when the ball is kicked long by the opposition and having enough confidence to go for the pack mark backing into the contest when required. He must be able to go forward and provide run or an additional marking option. He most importantly must be able to go into the guts and general the troops by leading by example with his fanatical determination to get the pill, whether thats in and under or burning off the opposition mids. In short he firstly has to be able to get the friggin red thing and run and carry and deliver with precision to our talls up forward.

You have probably read the last paragraqph and thought well that description fits a young Kouta. If we have a similar player that fits the profile, he has been well hidden. Believe it or not we do, and with the roles that he has been given the past 2 seasons he is now ready to become an elite player and take the next step in grabbing the leadership mantle. I believe this young adonis should be the next Skipper of our famous old club. That player is.........

It's a good choice if we're looking to be long term with the appointment, a very good choice.

Well if you keep standing there with a target on your back, what do you expect?

The last thing Andrew Walker needs is the pressure of captaincy. In the last month, he really has taken steps forward. He seems to have taken more responsibility for his own development (not a shot at Pagan) and he is starting to show genuine offensive qualities.

Good luck to him but wait a couple of years before he's saddled with team responsibilities. Let him construct his own game first.

Dont agree....needs to concentrate on his skills without the burden of the captains job....its out of three IMHO ...Stevens, Whitnall and Fev.....I'd pick Fev as he already is the defacto leader however if i was a betting man I would say Lance will start favourite...

I was actually thinking you were going to say Murph and was shocked with you answer.

We want someone who can lead the boys who are respected by the boys as a peer and not a chummy mate. These young blokes a smart and dedicated and need guidence.

We all hope AW finds enough form to justify being #2 pick but he's still miles away ATM.

I reckon Lance for 3 years followed by the only obvious choice in Murphy. That will see us to 2018 with 2 great captains.

Didn't he nominate himself for election into the leadership group last year?

He's doing it more and more out on the field, and he clearly wants to be part of it. I reckon it might be worth a shot if he understands what he's undertaking.

At the very least he needs to go into the leadership group.

I am starting to like the idea of Tex taking over as he has been putting he's hand up as a leader since day one. He is now showing it on the ground too.

Just don't want to over load the kid either, He is still 20 and will only be 23 - 25 when Lance and Fev leave the club so maybe that will be he's time

While walker has done his best to prove me wrong over the last few weeks he is still MILES away from captaincy.

let him concentrate on hitting targets and getting the ball for the time being, if his improvement continues, sure, consider him once lance or fev are done with the role but he just isnt ready.

There is only one logical decision. We do not have anyone at Carlton suitable for the captaincy role. This is why we need to look else where.

Next years captain will be Jono Brown. Hope Gibbs and Whitnall enjoy Brisbane.

obviously if Lance is Captain, but if Fev is captain then it will either be simpson walker or stevens to be VC....probably stevens but would much prefer simmo

There needs to be a lot more tough decisions both on/off field made before worrying about who is going to be captain.

Gee Elwood, did you see a few of Fev's chasing 'efforts' and disinterest after poor kicks on Sunday? He is a great player and has had a great year but he is not a captian and the fact that in his 7th season at age 25 we still have to highlight his 1%s that we should be taking for granted and excuse him when he doesn't do them indicates that he is not a captain. Nothing wrong with not being a captain, lets let him kick goals. Also Full Forwards are rarely captains. Need to be in the play. I think it will be Whitnall - no doubt Synbad is writing for afl.com as I see they say 'With a record that's as impressive as it is long, Whitnall may well become one of the greatest ever players to don Carlton's famous navy blue jumper. ' I don't quite agree with that, but as with everything it will be a holding process as we rebuild, and I actually think Whit has provided good leadership this year.

If we were after captain qualities (regardless of footy talent), I reckon Barney sets the best example, but unfortunately he is a battler - tho good the last few weeks. To me he is the best leader of the senior players in terms of workrate, determination, effort and off field articularity. Over the years we have had so many captain types who have never got the gig, now there are no obvious candidates.

Re AW, his form has been great, but of the youngsters in 3-4 years time I'd be looking at Kennedy or Murphy.

Lance will NOT be traded.

For that matter, Waite will also NOT be traded.

Walker is SO FAR AWAY from being in a position to captain the club next year, it is laughable. Let the kid develop. Think about Luke Hodge, who has played 3 seasons of football better than Walker, and he and the club both knew he wasn't ready to captain Hawthorn this year. Walker will become a great player, he needs to focus on that without worrying about being captain.

There's one huge positive to appointing Fevola that no-one's mentioned yet.

If Lance or Stevens is appointed I think they'll probably be okay without being the truly inspirational leader our club needs. Both players football is questioned regularly by many supporters and an appointment of one or another would split Carlton fans somewhat. The big issue though is what happens in a couple of years when one of our younger guys (think Murphy, Simmo etc) is ready to assume the leadership.

Do we simply axe Lance or Stevo from the job and say piss off?

No-one questions Fev's football anymore. It's all about his attitude.

With Fev I get the impression it's far more likely that he'll either be an absolutely inspired choice or a bit of a disaster if he loses the plot.

If he loses the plot within two years by then we have a young long term captain ready to take over. If he doesn't lose the plot we've found ourselves a truly inspirational leader and kept Fev on the straight and narrow at the same time.

Murph, Simmo etc might then have to wait a little longer but would anyone care if Fev was doing an outstanding job?

I suppose what I'm getting at is that by appointing Whitnall or Stevens we may be then stuck with a less inspired choice for 3-5 years.

I doubt that would be the case with Fev who I think will either be a clear success or an obvious failure.

I have an incredibly hard time justifying giving the captaincy to a guy who for 6 years was a a complete idiot, and whose attitude was nothing short of attrocious. All he has done in the last six months is exactly what you would expect of any footballer, more so one who is on $400k a year. Nothing more, nothing less.

Full credit to him for turning it around, and for starting to realise his potential. However, he still is prone to doing stupid things on the field (he was dragged two weeks ago, and very lucky not to have been dragged twice in that week. And yes, he turned it around and kicked 8, but a captain simply cannot have those lapses), and say stupid things off it. Six months is simply not enough to have proven yourself, nor, even more importantly, to have EARNDED IT. What he needs to do is to show over a 2 or 3 year period that his new attitude is the norm. Day in, day out, month in, month out, YEAR IN, YEAR OUT. Only then can he be considered. Only then will he have EARNED the honour.

Yes, we are short on leadership, that is clear. To me, though, Whitnall will make an excellent captain. He is already an onfield leader, and unlike some others on this site, I believe his attitude over the last couple of years has been excellent, and his input and form last year and this shows it. He will finish in the top 3 or 4 of the B & F, and may even win it.

And when a Murphy or a Walker or a Simpson or a Gibbs (!) is ready to take over, Lance will do a Kouta/Hird and hand it over.

i like robert walls idea where because we havent got a standout leader atm we should have co-captains for a while until murph is ready to take the reins by himself but until then i think whitnall for the defense, murph for midfield and fev for forward. just like robert walls, im not usually a fan of co-captaincy but atm we dont have a standout or proer captain to lead us. it worked for sydney last year but the only problem with this could be that the senior players such as stevens, scotland etc. might not guide murph they might just leave him to sort everything out himself as he is the captain.

Andrew Walker is the turnover king.

and when he was running into the open goal about 35m out in the last quarter on sunday i think everyone in the stadium knew he wouldn't get near it (it didn't even make the distance and was rushed through for a point).
or the beautiful spoil right back into the goal square for a richmond goal. no thanks.

Fevola should be the next captain, and Whitnall vice.
