totally agree

there's no positive spin to be had on this... maybe we need more home truths to encourage change.

I'm not a great Goddard fan (not yet anyway but I can change) but I'd take that in a heartbeat..........lol. If we were in the NFL in the US we could actually do that, theoretically.

Renowned for positivity, molsey advises that the fact that Wilson didnt have any new dirt and just seemed to rehash the last week's events was a positive for the Club....!

Perhaps they've closed ranks a little?

Also in one of the papers today was a snippet that Malouf, Pagan and Smorgan were all seen at the Flower Drum together last week.

Flower Drum?

In the good old days, Carlton's powerbrokers would meet in a nice Lygon or Rathdowne St restaurant.

We've lost our soul 8) ... emoticon already in place to head off the lamest gag ever to rear its head on TC.

Agree with Josh.....I dont see how Pagan can coach Carlton in 2007....totally comprimised by recent events and he is hanging on purely for the money...he cant have his heart in it.....lets get a deal done where he resigns, gets his money and we can look for a new coach before all the decent candidates are gone and we get forced into taking someone we dont really want...

The only pressure that has yet to ease is the pressure of Caroline Wilson's need for a complete face transplant - the arse of a Siberian Camel would make an enormous improvement.

" Rightly or wrongly, Pagan has been stripped off his loyal lieutenant Tony Elshaug and as yet been given no guarantee of any support in what can only be described as an under-resourced football department in relative AFL terms"

Bit of poor editing in the first sentence there, or do you take away the word "been" and come up with a horrible vision....

Right on the money there Molsey....
Can't believe people can't read between the lines....the whole article is an "I reckon...." and may as well have been posted on TC

What's worse is the reference to Brown's "partial" ticket....I hope that's not true...the ;ast thing we need is a halfway measure or a board that can't agree on anything

You would only need 2 or 3 strong minded new characters on the Board to effect decent change reform and positive direction, as the current lot of fops have no idea - and one of them is only concerned with who wears number 5 - and the President just goes from 1 board meeting to another in between visits to the surgeon for charisma by-passes.

Agreed Agro... about the partial ticket thing. Some of the people I work with make Smorgon look like Dame Edna (hey, theres a marketing ploy) so I wont comment on that.

The other benefit of a few new people could be the political mileage; a new input but still a) no tearing of the Club apart and all variants of that plus b) scapegoating of those that leave. Politically you could just restructure the Board and remove some, replace them with $ and / or ideas and still achieve the same aim.

I'm sure the 10-0 was required before the Board left the meeting room that night but Im sure there had to be reservations from some, perhaps many.

Having thought about this long and hard I have changed my view . This is called a Kernahan or Gleeson now. Pagan just cant stay on as coach because he obviously doesnt have it anymore. And Sticks,Smorgon and Gleeson have to find their way onto Royal Parade as well. The knew ticket hopefully will happen.Just another 1.2 mill more in the red but with enough financial help we can pay Pagan out.Brown has the contacts. With Pagan at the helm I just cant see how its going to work.

bUT WHATEVER THE DECISION WE MUST GET IT RIGHT NOW OTHERWISE WE ARE [REDACTED]. tHAT IS HOW BAD WE ARE AT THE MOMENT.

Lucky it wasn't in Denis' front yard

From today's issue of Crikey (credit to author Nick Place) - you have to get half way through the piece to realise they ARE NOT talking about Carlton   .

But where are the media vultures on this one.

It has been said many times that running a football club is a lot different to normal business. And that’s a lucky thing because otherwise our economy would truly be down the toilet.

Let’s look at people management AFL-style for a moment – or, to put it another way, put yourself in Geelong coach Mark Thompson’s shoes.

Let’s say that you are an accountant. It gets out, through the usual workplace gossip, that your company’s Board is having a long look at your performance. You don’t know if that’s true or not, but you’ve been with the company for seven years and your output has been pretty good but not necessarily outstanding. You start to feel nervous and ask your boss if your position is safe.

Now you really start to worry because he won’t commit to you, privately or publicly. In front of everybody, and in print in the company newsletter, he announces a "full review" of the accounting practice is underway, being run by the CEO, who suddenly takes to sitting over your left shoulder while you’re at your desk, crunching the usual tax numbers.

Now rumours start swirling that the Board is split, 50-50, on whether you’re any good. The entire company is leaking like the Titanic, post-iceberg, with claims that the review has found your communication skills are terrible, your assistants aren’t up to it, the other accountants are divided on whether they want to hear your voice at WIP meetings.

You stagger off for a holiday (good luck relaxing!) while this endless review continues. The CEO furrows his brow and announces he’ll need another week or two. Hardly an endorsement. An old accountant, not even part of your company, tells a business breakfast that he’s heard you’re gone.

Where does this leave you? Even if the review finally says you’re still employed, you know you’re a dead man walking in every sense but your pay cheque. One or two bad BAS forms in a row in the first quarter of next year and the calls for your head will start all over again.

Welcome to Mark Thompson’s world. This Geelong review has gone for so long and been so divisive, with so many parlour whispers, that it has rendered the Geelong coach next to impotent. The latest talk is that he’ll limp over the line and be allowed to stay on. It might be kinder, by now, to put him out of his misery and cop the payout.

just been thinking a little bit more about the whole 'Denis stays / Denis goes' issue and i thought i would compare our situation with other recent clubs who have moved on their coach!

in 2004, we finished a respectable 11th. in that year, 4 coaches were replaced.

-2004-

Adelaide - 12th.
Bulldogs - 14th.
Hawthorn - 15th.
Richmond - 16th

-2006-

Adelaide - 2nd. (+10 spots)
Bulldogs - 8th. (+6 spots)
Hawthorn - 11th. (+ 4 spots)
Richmond - 9th. (+7 spots)

Have those 4 above teams lists really changed all that much?

Sure, Richmond picked up the brilliant Delideo, but he had an indifferent season this year and didn't even finish in the Top 10 in the B&F.

Bulldogs grabbed Cooney, who has also had an indifferent season, & Griffen a year later who has been very impressive, but the Bulldogs must give thanks to their more senior players such as West & Johnson......two players who were there under the previous coach.

Hawthorn have dropped quite a few 'Bludgers' in Hay, Beaumont, Ries, etc, etc etc and have picked up roughly 6 kids in the draft that will be very handy players in the future, but have really had minimal impact since arriving at Hawthorn (Ie, Roughead who is still in development stages) with the exception of Franklin. But it is still the senior type players such as Spider, Crawford, Mitchell & Williams who have stepped up........those players being a part of the former coaches side also.

& Adelaide.
The only team i've ever known of to go from Wooden Spoon favourites at the start of the season to Premiership favourites just 12 rounds later! Same players as what Gary Ayres had to deal with, who at the time were considered getting to old, slow, not talented enough, etc, etc, etc. Now look at em!

These 2006 sides (with the exception of a few losses & new pick-ups here and there) are pretty much the same sides as 2004 yet all of them have left us for dead in terms of development.

Just food for thought.....................
