Geez Clem, take it easy.

the kid is 19 - he's old enough to make his own decisions. Personally I think it is a privelidge to play AFL regardless of the club and to do so in a national competition, then some sacrifices might be made - Denis Pagan, CFC or not.

Its an hour by plane to Adelaide if he gets homesick. We've probably all done plenty of business trips around Aus for 1 hour meetings etc. He could do the same if he wanted to eat his mum's roast every second weekend.

I think he has let himself down as much as the club. Just a bit too precious for mine. And ditto Thornton. Does he seriously think Carlton will be on the bottom for ever. The system is just not like that.
I reckon he's managed to paint himself into a corner with a media slut money hungry manager and forgotten what playing elite footy should be all about - and that's the journey with team mates. (IMHO)

I went after Camporeale, Kouta etc. because the wages they were earning was ridiculous. For the amount they were being paid, they had to do more for their pay.

With Russell, it has nothing to do with pay. Some of you would probably not have the courage to cop the sh*t that some of the players have.

Why don't I say that you people who are calling these younger players these ridiculous epithets that you're f***** losers and w*****s and whatever, you'll say that I wouldn't say it to your face. But would you say it to these players' faces?

The kid is 19, Setanta was 21 or 22 - you can't use that as an argument.

Why don't some of you show some decency? Some of you don't deserve to barrack for the CFC. If you're going to criticise someone, do it decently.

Ever been inside a boardroom ... ever been inside a changerrom at half-time of a game. This is the way people speak in the real world when the pressure is on and emotions are high.

As a president of a soccer club I have had no hesitation in saying these things when the need arises - its called the passion of the game and for your club when it is clear others do not share the same sense of loyalty.

WBY - agree wholeheartedly on the thornton scenario and the way it has evolved.

On Russell, the homesickness may be an issue but it is only a 45 minute plane trip and he is supposedly being paid for doing what he loves - playing football. Its not a bad existence and if he can't handle that then its probably best he leaves and we find players that actually want to play for us.

Agree 100% Dukester, just pretty suprised the flower hadn't given "interstate" some thought when he signed a draft form. Not as if it's Siberia. There is some hope.

Denis should get hold of Simmo and sit him down with Russell and talk through the sitch before it goes beyond salvage.

What possible reason could someone have for wanting to live in Adelaide over Melbourne?

(1) An irrational fear of tall buildings?

(2) An aversion to loud noises, bright lights and streets full of people?

(3) A dislike of good food and cool bars?

(4) A longing to live in a city so parochial, it actually believes that if it weren't for some strange conspiracy by Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, it'd actually be the economic heartland of Australia?

(5) The desire to live in a city that's going to be at the frontline (just behind Bangladesh) of the negative impacts of climate change?

(6) The ability to sport a mullet without it being an ironic take on the new wave 'anti fashion' movement.

What IS this guy thinking??? OK, so he may hate Pagan's guts, but it doesn't take a brain surgeon to realise that DP's days at Princes Park are numbered.

Shit, I'm over this.

Clem, Russell turns 20 in a couple of weeks and Setanta was 20 when he travelled half a world away to play a game he'd never played before. So pretty valid to compare So'Hs strength of character with Russell's. Also as WBY and others point out, he hasn't been sent to Mars to play footy. It's an hour away. And he didn't have a gun at his head when he put himself in the draft and signed a contract. He is probably on 110k + and has played a handful of games, if you put your hand up to take the dough then you agree to the National competition. I went to live interstate when I was 20 and I didn't have a footy club holding my hand... and it was great. Footy is a really tough emotional game. It is why they get paid so much. If you don't want what goes with the cash you don't have to play

If you are saying some of us don't have the courage required to be an AFL footballer then in my case you are right, I don't, nor the talent and I earn half or less than half of what Russell gets and he will earn more in the next 8 years than I will in my entire working life. It is a tough game, people yell at you, emotional supporters get angry with you. That's why you get paid miles more than other 20 year old kids.

Also Russell would do well to remind his manager that he respects the fact that Carlton took him at #9 and insist on a trade rather than the PSD. I would much rather Russell confront the deficiencies in his game (eye on the ball) and decide to become a great Carlton player. If he turns his back on us, I reserve the right to be angry about it because the passion of supporters is what pays the wages. He is probably the 300th best footballer in Australia, if he was a cricketer he would be paying to play and if he was in any other sport he would have to travel a lot further than to Melbourne. Character is all about dealing with adversity. We need ability, but we need truckloads of character. And we have never needed it more than now when every defection is another nail in our coffin.

Can't help but agree, GA. Williams is not averse to using some interesting terminology - even to sponsers.
The more the Jordan Russell thing goes on, the more betrayed I feel by him. We have given him a chance to fulfill his lifelong dreams and plenty of opportunity to make a name for himself. What do we get? More knives than Caesar in the back.
I have stood up for Jordan - I felt that he had a future. I can certainly see some similarities to the early career of Simmo and hoped that Russell would go the same way when he got the confidence in himself.
I won't bother to stand up for him again. I want him gone. I reserve the right to treat him as I would a Hammill or a Campo, as he has let us down in much the same way. If he has a career like Hammill's I will feel he has reaped what he sowed.

Jordan could hate the 3 weathers in a day,he might get along with his football club and the players, but that doesn't mean he call them his friends, his true friends are home, probably known him since he was 5 and his family, not some called new friend,he might not trust us much.I would go home,if i had a chance to, if i never went for the club like i presume he didn't if i could, especially now and if i was Gibbs, the same if the club was a mess in 2 years if i didn't follow the club. They came to the club because they were force in a draft.

Look we doing exactly what the Dockers did, trying to fix our financial debts before getting our football team right and that mean not giving in to what the club offers and they know it will lose players and possibly some members, but i think it's their number 1 priority.
