We need good people and we need to do it NOW; bank on a high profile signing and new CEO like O'Neill and sell it to the members, then they'll sign up.
Our last high profile (read - expensive) signing cost us $2m over 3 years and its very difficult to point to anything that confirms his effectiveness.
Where would you pay for this high profile person to come in? We cant cut anywhere else anymore..so it has to come from the Bank. Unlike other businesses (family or personal businesses) would one person run the risk of the Club's debt actually being called in? It's very risky.
I think we've done the hardest yards now so to break the bank to bring in someone of potential value is too risky. the business world is full of dhead CEO's who cost a lot and can talk the talk but go nowhere.
Chicken and the Egg, Rock and a hard place.....you need the big bucks to get the right people but after being burnt by Pagan its once bitten twice shy and I think it would be a brave board who would ok the amount of money that someone like ONeill would want...that would have to come from an outside benefactor and while there has been plenty of talk about White knights we still have not seen any White Knight put his cash on the table.
At the same time its hard to see Malouf being the type of CEO to dig us out of the mess either and sometimes in business you need to take a risk and spend some money to make some money....but
The average member is more interested in wins than bank balances and getting the best players..its only the fanatics and tragics who look at the big picture and are bothered with the financial future..
You could sign up the best CEO , reduce debt but if that doesnt reflect in wins on the park then you are still going to struggle to sign members.
The clubs fate rests fairly heavily on the likes of Marc Murphy, Josh Kennedy and probably Bryce Gibbs...thats why to me the performance of the coach is more critical rather than Malouf..
Unless a new CEO gets a bundle of money from a white knight I dont think he will change things much and I dont feel like paying him a fortune if thats the case...
