Yes the announcement is made on the eve of the elections...what's new? That's politics.
"More bang for your bucks"
"Kill 2 birds with one stone"
The football community, local communities and PR campaign to kick off the electioneering all served in one hit.

Fair enough to be suspicious of politicians, but this has been on the table for 3-4 years. It hasn't happened overnight. There are many stakeholders in this package, and naturally it would take time to line up all the ducks. Furthermore it is official now after the announcement, and a necassary measure; perhaps some modifications may be required to meet 'unforeseen/'overlooked' building regulations.
As for the MCC's contribution in the whole package $4M/$55M, where the contributions in their municipality alone from other parties is in the vicinity of $15M for their $4M. I think it would not be prudent of them to ignore such an injection of capital from external parties. What option do they have? Let the buildings further deteriorate and fall down, injure people, or alternatively close them down as unsafe? I think it would be unsafe for them not to toe the line. They're stitched up whether they like it or not. Being politicians themselves (MCC) they too want their 5 mins of fame.

But Tommi it's not just the building, it's what it symbolises. Imo the most significant announcement was Demetrious publicly stating that Carlton will be around for a very long time, and are considered an important contributor to the economic and social fabric of Victoria. Over the last 2 months we have been shitting ourselves about the precarious situation regarding our existence, let alone our survival in Victoria, as the Carlton Blues. Very significant!
