Just received this in my inbox…

Quote:
Shortly, the Carlton Football Club will be conducting a members' survey.

Your views will help us serve you better in the future. As a sign of our appreciation, all members who complete the questionnaire will go into a draw to win signed merchandise from the club.

The survey will be conducted online and members will be notified by email. The questionnaire can be completed by answering the questions directly within the email, or alternatively, members can click on a link and be directed to the questionnaire on the website of Feedback Friend, which is conducting the survey on our behalf.

Yours sincerely,
Tanya Gallina
Membership Manager
Carlton Football Club

No doubt there will be some interesting replies.

Typical inward vision...

Survey to existing members:

Question One

Tell us why you like us so much? etc...

Good grief!!

Why not survey people WHO USED TO BE MEMBERS???

Why not survey people WHO HAVE NEVER BEEN MEMBERS???

Surely, some quality figures would be in this far bigger pond of opinions.

Who cares what current members think - sure it would be nice - but the club already has their financial support... Their feedback will be generally supportive to where the club currently is. You will learn nothing.

More importantly, in our current climate, if somebody is no longer a paying memeber - wouldn't the club like to know why?

Absolute Nonsense. Ignore the wishes of current financial members and the numbers will plummet even further

There is just no pleasing some people. The club gets bagged for everything they do.

I personally am pleased they are taking this iniative.

I agree with both of you!

It's great they are canvassing the thoughts of the members willing to support the club in it's tough times. But it would also be good if they canvassed the opinions of ex or non members too. Mind they're hardly going to announce that in a global email to members are they. ;)

Its a good initiative and I hope it lets you answer honestly.

For non-members its a bit harder as we may not have their emails and they may have moved. They may also be dark on the Club for some reason. More importantly, they may be dark on the Club for not contacting them to find out why they didn't re-sign. I think the Club should design a very specific phone questionnaire for ex-members over 2003-2006 and follow up in a specific 2-3 week period say in February next year. Should cover all real reasons as to why someone may not have signed up - value for money right up to personal grievances with how the Club is run.

Its too important an issue to just assume away. If we find out 60% of fans gave up because of how the Club is run, we try to use March to sell the story about where we're going and what steps have been taken to advance.

To do it properly we'll probably need a volunteer army.

Absolute Nonsense....

OK, let's step through this:

If you are a paid member, you are obviously happy enough with the club to part with your money. It's money in the bank.

Over the past few years we have thousands of members who chose not to part with their money this season. This is money that is critcal to the club's success.

A "current members" survey won't tell you much. Sure, it will tell you that they enjoy the club benefits and loved the calendar they were sent etc...but will not reclaim the lost funds of other people who have walked away. We are not asking the vital question: "What can we do to get you back?" or more bluntly: "How can we get you to gives us your money?"

If we were in the Top 8 and had record membership figures, by all means, survey the faithful to confirm what we are doing right. However, when the figures are going down you need to change your marketing approach. You need to find out what you are doing wrong or prepare youself to go out of business fast.

And something like 5000 of this years members won't be members next year. Even when the club is doing well there is a fairly significant churn of members. Unfortunately, the churn will probably be higher next year than usual.

Finding out the reasons why these people might not be members next year, ahead of time, is absolutely a worthwhile exercise. I'm not saying that surveying ex-members wouldn't be good. But don't dismiss this as a worthwhile exercise.

I agree that the club should be contacting/surveying former members in a bid to get them back. But any organisation that doesn’t actively cater for current financial members is asking for trouble.

Most members will be pleased that the club is willing to listen their opinions. We can’t afford to loose any more members and this is an important step in retaining them. The club should be applauded for this initiative, not bagged.

One survey counts the money or data you already have, and the other has the potential to earn you the money or data you currently miss out on...

Which survey will give you a better business return - considering the position we are currently in?

Given the obvious level of dissatisfaction happening, if this board is any yardstick, it's a pretty pissweak survey.

there was no input for suggestions, nothing specific about interstate membership, etc.

I don't think it will achieve much overall.

Haven't received one myself & generally receive emails from the club. Is that because I'm an AFL/ Carlton member and they're not interested in our opinion? Have any AFL members received them?

Did you miss Q66?

There was a field for both 2005 and 2006 members and also directions if you wanted to leave more detailed feedback at the bottom of the email. (I completed the survey using the website, not the email form.)

I'm an AFL member and I've received an email saying that the CFC will conduct a survey shortly. I think it came through yesterday.
