Surprised Wallace didn't mention Murphy leaving for GWS will impact us in two years also.

I think the names of players going to GWS is about to heat up. This morning KB said that the rumour going around is that they have signed 5 players. While i didnt hear him apparently Eddie Maguire said on his show that Tom Scully is signed, sealed and delivered to GWS. The 4 other players werent mentioned, i hope Murphy isnt one of them.
Sad thing about this is that GWS has 2 years to sign up players so this will on for another 18 months.

How will this go on for 18 months? they'll be playing AFL this time next year

ps. The filth have a few players out of contract this year including swan, thomas and pendlebury. Here's hoping they all go

GWS has 2 years to sign up out of contract players, so any coming out of contract ths year AND next year can be signed by them.

They might have 2 years but they don't have a never ending salary cap. 1 million extra is a lot, especially when the majority of the list are young, but they can't offer ridiculous money to more than 3 or 4 players.

They'd want the vast majority of the "priority" signings so they're ready to go next year.

The second year i can't see much happening, in a big way.

The AFL would be over the moon with that. They know that they can kick Carlton and Melbourne and Collingwood and Geelong supporters in the guts, because we'll stupidly keep fronting up every year. But if GWS don't win finals within 2 seasons, they won't stick.

The clubs voted for this because it brings money into the AFL, which ends up in the pockets of the club executives and players. But no-one should kid themselves that the introduction of Gold Coast and GWS is good for the supporters.

The new franchises (and the way they're being introduced) is great news for those who take money OUT of the game (the Demetrious, Swanns, Scullys and Murphys of the world), and shitty news for those who put money INTO the game (idiots like us).

Not holding out any hope for Murphy. The fact he hasn't signed yet means money is important to him. And if money matters, there's no way we can compete with GWS. If he stays I'll be incredibly surprised and absolutely wrapt.

Last year Grigg had already signed for Gold Coast. There were 8 names but I can't remember the others.

If he hasnt re-signed at rd22, then I'll worry. Till then its all gossip to me.

With the amount GWS would have to be paying overs to get players to them (I'd suggest it would be higher than GC because of the lifestyle factor), if they signed those five guys they'd have $0.50 left for the remaining 87 players they're allowed on their list.

I'm sure some of them would end up at GWS, but all of them? Can't see it.

Just heard a quote from Judd on SEN saying he would understand anyone leaving because they need to look after their future. I reckon Murphy is as good as gone.

Also they signed Folau on big $$ too, does his salary go in the cap?

No, I don't think so. Essendon* were trying to get Inglis outside the cap under the same rule.

Anyway, I reckon GWS could fess up to Demetriou that they'd blown the salary cap on their first 8 players, and he'd probably give them another 8 mill to spend due to "exceptional circumstances". Whatever. It. Takes.

I know you can't take twitter too seriously, but jeez i'd be surprised if murph left. Seems to be very very good mates with Russell, gibbs, simmo and walker. Plus, we hear every trade week how much money the blues have to throw around... murphy is due to receive a bit of it. is our second most valuable player, and will be paid accordingly.

True Shag, but I thought the same about Grigg as well. He was and still is quite close with these guys as evidenced on twitter.

Anyone know anything ?

I wish Murph would say something, like thomas did for Collingwood today.

Not the end of the world if he does go. He is a top notch player and it will be sad but we will still be a top side in years to come.

It would be a big decision for the bloke. Could set himself up for life and possibly still win a flag or he could stay with his mates and finish what he started.

The collingwood blokes who already have a flag -albeit an afl spoon fed fake one- would be keener to take the cash i would imagine.

After all the sh*t Murph had to put up with in his first two seasons under Pagan, why would chose he leave now, just as our Premiership window is about to open, to go to a team who'll probably struggle in their first few years.
Ablett had achievd all he could have at the Cats, so the move north was in a way understandable for him.

Money.

Lots and lots and lots of money.

It's the thing society values most now.

Most players traditionally haven't left their clubs because the difference between shiny new contract and what the current club offers isn't enough to have them leave their mates.

But everyone has a price. And the AFL has ensured that GWS and GC have enough money to find that price. If Murphy leaves, it'll be for the money. As a supporter, that hurts. But that's what you get when you use money as a lever to manipulate the system.

Why didn't O'Brien re-sign until the end of 2010?

Thomas will be praised by Collingwood supporters for his comments, yet like Pendlebury, O'Brien and Swan, he won't re-sign until later this year to bump his price up. Work culture is more important than money. My sister was offered money by her former employer to stay, yet still chose to change jobs to work for a company with a better work environment.

Money isn't everything.

Pavlich didn't re-sign until the eve of finals, so you're jumping the gun with the assumption that Murphy is gone. If an established player sees that his club is on track like Freo who improved last year, then they could re-sign and put success ahead of more money. Dayne Beams could have put off re-signing in 2009 and moved back home to play with the GC, but chose to stay a Collingwood player.

It's easier for a fringe player such as Grigg or Laidler to change clubs for more money and chances.

Ablett and Judd chose to move on and take the money because the Geelong and WC eras were coming to a close.

If the Pies win another flag, I'd put money on Swan leaving for his final pay day over Thomas or Pendlebury. These two players are young enough and wise enough to realise that they could become Collingwood's next marquee player. Didak and Swan probably have just four to five seasons left in them. I wouldn't be surprised to see the latter leave and take the dosh.
