Not holding out any hope for Murphy. The fact he hasn't signed yet means money is important to him. And if money matters, there's no way we can compete with GWS. If he stays I'll be incredibly surprised and absolutely wrapt.
Why didn't O'Brien re-sign until the end of 2010?
Thomas will be praised by Collingwood supporters for his comments, yet like Pendlebury, O'Brien and Swan, he won't re-sign until later this year to bump his price up. Work culture is more important than money. My sister was offered money by her former employer to stay, yet still chose to change jobs to work for a company with a better work environment.
Money isn't everything.
Pavlich didn't re-sign until the eve of finals, so you're jumping the gun with the assumption that Murphy is gone. If an established player sees that his club is on track like Freo who improved last year, then they could re-sign and put success ahead of more money. Dayne Beams could have put off re-signing in 2009 and moved back home to play with the GC, but chose to stay a Collingwood player.
It's easier for a fringe player such as Grigg or Laidler to change clubs for more money and chances.
Ablett and Judd chose to move on and take the money because the Geelong and WC eras were coming to a close.
If the Pies win another flag, I'd put money on Swan leaving for his final pay day over Thomas or Pendlebury. These two players are young enough and wise enough to realise that they could become Collingwood's next marquee player. Didak and Swan probably have just four to five seasons left in them. I wouldn't be surprised to see the latter leave and take the dosh.
