does anyone know of anything that might have caused this? something at the club?
Laidley is on record saying they (the Roos) studied how Carlton's forward setup operated in the Whizzer and formulated a counter to it, which was to crowd our forward line ie. flood.
We were also the only team who brought our a-game to the Whizzer.
So should teams not try to win the Wizard Cup for fear of being "studied" and worked out? Even if Laidley's claim is true, our forward line I would argue hasn't been the concern this season. Of course it's true that flooding has negated our effectiveness at times this season but come on, it's hardly the key explanation for why we've been as poor as we have.
Some sides probably didn't exactly go all out to win the Wizard Cup but Carlton genuinely played some pretty good footy. We beat West Coast who fielded a similar side to the one that's been in most of the season. I just don't think some people give us enough credit for how well we actually played. Yes I acknowledge that the opposition might not have wanted it as much as us but contrast the way we played in the Wizard Cup, the confidence, the movement of the footy to what we've seen during the season, it's chalk and cheese.
Whilst we all know that our list isn't the best, I still see no really convincing explanation as to why we should go from looking like chocolates to boiled lollies from the Wizard Cup to much of the season.
