How about we compare them at the end of their careers?

Sticks was the go-to man from day 1.
He took more pack marks in a year than Waitey has in his career.
Jarrad shows a lot of potential but he has a long way to go before being mentioned in the same breath as Kernahan.

Waitey is very hot and cold and needs to improve his understanding of the game.

How about we compare them as at the completion of their 3rd year:

Sticks: member of the 1986 GF team (runners up), captain of the 1987 premiership team, our leading goalkicker 3(?) years running, leader of our contested marks 3(?) years running.

Waite: member of the 2003 wooden spoon runners up, 2003 NRS nominee, member of the 2005 wooden spoon team, 2005 second on our goalkicking table.

We hope and pray that Waite can be a fraction of the player that Sticks was.

But that's the problem - you're comparing apples with oranges. Aside from the fact that they're playing different roles and the quality of the players around them is completely different the comparison you've made is between a physically mature player between 21 and 23 years of age with senior SANFL experience and a physically immature player between 19 and 21.

I don't expect Waite to be the player Kernahan was but I'm not going to pre-judge him either.

I don't think we'll know how good Waite will or won't be until he's 25-26.

We can't compare them. Waite will never be the CHF Sticks was, he'll never take the marks like Sticks did because he doesn't play like that.
Waite is super athetic and can play on the wing, only time Sticks drifted that far was to dish out some hurt.

I remember Frank Dardew pushing up for Waite but no one else.

Well Elwood you forgot the idiot who said he was worth a top 10 pick that year!

Anyway good stats Jurasa despite what everyone else says. It just shows some players are not that far off.

Jarrad Waite has just played a season where he stepped up a notch. He still has another notch or two to climb if he wants to consider himself amongst the elite in the competition.

I thought it would be interesting to compare the young Waite to the young Kernahan.

In 1986 when Kernahan was a spritely 22 year old (turning 23 on the 1st of Sept 1986) he gathered the following stats.

From 25 Games:
233 kicks
156 marks
95 handballs
62 goals

Average:
9.3 kicks
6.2 marks
3.8 handballs
2.5 goals

In 2005 when Waite is a spritely 22 year old (turning 23 on the 3rd Feb 2006), therefore at the same season 7 months younger than Sticks.

From 21 Games:
185 kicks
119 marks
95 handballs
36 goals

Average:
8.8 kicks
5.7 marks
4.5 handballs
1.7 goals

Considering that Waite is 7 months younger at the same stage this is not a bad comparison at all. (especially considering the relative ladder positions of the 1986 Carlton side versus the 2005 Carlton side)

In fact if Waite improves a bit again next year he will pretty much match what Kernahan did in the 1986 season (at the same age) before he was made captain in 1987.

Food for thought?

*bump*

Waite of 2006.

So far 1 game

18 kicks
4 handballs
10 marks
3 goals

If he keeps this pace up for the rest of the season he will easily match Kernahan's output at the same age.

Early days, but here's hoping. :P

He was awesome today and his marking was great too. Hopefully he can keep it up against tougher opponents.

He just looked unstoppable this week. Pavlich-esque. Or should I say Waite=esque?

If he had kicked vaugly straight in the second half it would have been a lot less tense. Needs to work on that, but gee you can't fault the rest of his game tonight. :-D
