National Draft

1 Marc Murphy 179cm 19 July 1987
2 Shannon Hurn 188cm 4 September 1987
3 Tren West 197cm 17 October 1987
4 Jessie White 196cm 9 January 1988
5 Brad Kelleher 188cm 19 May 1987

Promoted To Seniors

6 * Setanta O'hAilpin 198cm 18 March 1983
7 * Jesse D. Smith 183cm 20 February 1986

From Trades/
8 Steven Salopek 183cm 21 June 1985
9 Jimmy Bartel 186cm 4 December 1983
10 Fergus Watts 196cm 21 September 1985

Rookie List

Nick Becker 185cm 7 July 1986
Aisake O'hAilpin 199cm 24 August 1985
Daniel Batson 202cm 8 May 1986
Kris Shore 191 cm 23 March 1985

Gone

1 Glen Bowyer
2 David Clarke
3 Karl Norman
4 Jordan Bannister
5 Digby Morrell
6 Ian Prendergast
7 Brett Johnson
8 Simon Wiggins
9 Matthew Lappin
10 Troy Longmuir

Lance Whitnall for a couple of Eagles maybe, would like Luke Power and
Sam Power but doubt will get him and Bryon Pickett may be considered while Shannon Grant will stay at Kangaroos or get picked up by another club.

I think Scott Camporeale will stay and Ryan Houlihan and Trent Sporn while Callum Chambers ,Justin Davies, Brendan Fevola ,Luke Livingston and Cory McGrath could be on their last year.

Looking at the team their is about 16 players that could go but i think 10 could go but 7 is more likely but if we take 5 new kids + 2 promotions you think at least 2 guys would get picked up as trades so maybe 9 unless we use our draft to pick uncontracted players.

It would be nice to have a fast classy midfield once again. Once we've got the midfield the rest will fall into place.

There is no way in hell we will get Marcus Drum as our 3rd guy,he will go in the top 10 unless we get another pick after 4.

You dont rate Steven Salopek, i think he will be a gun recruit when he comes to Victoria.

There is no way Des Headland leaving WA

Graham Polak i would try but not much on this site want him and he is almost certain to stay.

Luke Power will do a trade with Collingwood that gives away one of their first pick, i think i wouldn't trade our pick 4 for him.

I dont think Trent Sporn will be delisted maybe traded.

The other draft guys you went for smalls/Medium when we desperately need talls and a Ruckman, well we really need 2 ruckman.

Tomi Johnson would be a bad mistake for Carlton, he would be a big risk for AFL, maybe give him a shot as a rookie or tell him to wait another year when he develop more.

Andain, I doubt we will draft another ruckman any time soon.
We have French, DeLuca and Bryan as ready made ruckman for the moment with possibly Setanta and definitely Batson and Aisake waiting in the wings.

Never said I didn't rate Salopek, just that I'd rather go after Des Headland. I'd be pretty happy to have Salopek actually. As for Des not leaving WA, well he might have to if Fremantle really are keen on trading him like what's been rumoured. I doubt West Coast will pick him up.

We get another 8-13 pick in the draft by trading Lance or Lappin. That's how we get Drum. I don't expect him to fall through to our 2nd round pick either.

I wouldn't trade one of our two top picks for Power either. I was just nodding my head to the possibility of getting him.

How would Tomi be a risk if we picked him up with a late pick? Late picks mean nothing really and I'd rather pick up someone who's shown a fair bit of class but has an unpopular body type with a late pick then someone who has the right body type but can't play footy (eg Prendergast).

I doubt Sporn will make it at this point so I'd delist him. He would be the last player I'd delist in the group however.

I just picked the best player I saw available with that picks regardless of body type and that's the list I came up with. Of course my opinion really means squat but I'm still allowed to have one.

I see Aisake as more likely to end up as a defender. Batson is a potential ruckman who has yet to show anything. Bryan and Deluca have yet to set the world on fire and another ruckman on the rookie list couldn't hurt.

Why do you see Aisake as a defender?

It's very rare these days that you see a bloke who is 200cm as a key defender.

Dustin Flecther was a ruckman when he was recruited and he's 196cms which isn't really that far different from 200cm especially given our clubs perpensity to overstate the height of our players.

At this stage we don't know what Aisake will become and I'm not going to pretend that I'm a expert on Aisake but from most reports he seems to be playing in defence for the Bullants reserves. Of course I'll admit that I could be wrong.

I Still like a ruckman as Chris Bryan and Adrian Deluca are more useful up forward or back and not certain to be there in 3 years while Barnaby French will not be here for ever so i took a chance with Tren West and hopefully Daniel Batson can come up also.

Andain..re Bryce Gibbs....will be on the first plane back to SA after his initial contract expires dont you think...his old man appears very keen to have him play for the Crows..I reckon any Vic club recruiting him would be taking a big risk...

Will he? Sure he'd want to stay in SA as a preference but once he's left that should hopefully be that. Cooney's a South Australian, so's Griffin and Pavlich. And there have been plenty of other examples of players who haven't gone back home. I wouldn't be letting who we draft be determined by where a player originally came from.

So glad the topic of ruckmen came up - robert walls wrote an article about this after the saints lost to sydney ... and again i think the GF is a great example of how important a ruckman is to the team. Both the eagles and the swans have good ruckman (the saints don't - watch the bulldogs next year if Darcy stays fit).

Also remember that before Richmond took Knobel, he was all set to come to Carlton at the beginning of the year. The only true ruckman Carlton have is French and whilst we have lots of holes on the list, you would be fooling yourself to think that our ruck division is ok.

Finally Jolley is a good example that surplus ruckmen will get you great draft picks in trades ... they are so rare but important to the team. Time to get one of the surplus brisbane ruckman!
