I was in the huddle during Barry Mitchell's 3 quarter time address against Geelong and he said to the irishman why he passed the ball instead of having a shot I was amazed at the honestyof his response "I didnt have the confidence to have the shot" Not many players would have the balls to say this in front of all the other players


Mark my words this guy will make it in 2006 because he has a good head on his shoulders and wants to succeed.Having watched him at both ends of the ground I dont think he has the body on body strength yet to match it in the seniors


Play him on a wing or rotating off the ball in 06 DP.At 198cm he would be awesome.Plenty of miles in the legs to drive the engine.One of the things I looked forward to next year is watching this guy play senior footy .All the irish guys who have played AFL/VFL have a great attitude.This guy is no different.

Play him forward and instruct him at every opportunity to bust through the pack to either take the mark or bring the ball to ground.

should play as a forward in 2006 but some work should be done over the summer on his rucking skills because I think he could be an rotating option for french.

He should be played next year no matter what, if we're serious about him being a long-term player. I think they should swap him between the forwardline and the backline, depending on match-ups, and depending on how he's performing. I'd much rather have him shift to another part of the ground, then shift to the bench.

I'd be interested in giving him some time on the half back. Give him a decent player and make him accountable, keep it simple. Learn how a good forward makes space.
He will make mistakes, but he can learn from them.
I'd love to see him get the occasional run in the middle, but not on the wing, he may get lost there.
Having said all that he'll probably play on the foward line.

The biggest prob that i see with setanta is jarrad waite. Similar size, speed and game style but waite does it better. I'm struggling to see them both in the same forward line. PJ is right, we need a pack crashing tall forward, if carlos can't learn this then he may have a future down back - he's certainly commited enough to learn the position.

If I recall correctly Setanta has played most of his senior footy across half back. About 2 and a half quarters on McCarthy in the 2004 Wizard Cup at Optus Oval...

He only spent about 10 mins at full forward in the richmond game given he spent the game on the pine.

Has played a fair bit of VFL footy in the backline though depending on matchups and who else we had available and always seemed to do pretty well. Wouldn't mine seeing him play in the back line with Livingston and Thornton and just picking out the right match ups for each.

Setanta is learning the game so i can see him staying in the Forward line. But remember he is a long term project so we have to be aware that in 2006, it would be wise to drop him in the 2s to regain confidence and let him dominate every now and again.If not we risk burning him out

Chuck him in the deep end. Play him on Tredrea, Hall, Brown, etc. Lets see how much of a man he really is. We have problems in the back line so lets se if he can play backline. Tell him to punch the ball at every oppurtunity .At his size and with his athleticism he should woop there asses. He doesnt need a footy brain, just tell him not to get more than 3cm away from his player. If he needs to kick it we will have Campo and Houla running past for a handball. Doubt he will get a goal kicked on him all year.

OR

We could play him as a midfielder. He would at least be as good a Judd, if not better. Has size and pace and when he gets the ball we will all yell 'Run Santanta, Run" and when get gets within 2-5 metres of the goals he can kcik it through. He wont get tackled because he is such a tank.

You guys are expecting way too much from him. He will probly play only half the year and he wont have too much of an impact.

Play him as a forward/ruck. The best way to teach him how to ruck is too play him there. Him and Barney will rotate the duties and in a few years we will have both O'hailpin boys in the ruck.

Note: That last part of my post was serious.
