Rupertswood Mansion

Built in 1874, Rupertswood estate was home to wealthy pastoralist Sir Rupert Clarke and was also the birthplace of international cricket's most coveted trophy, The Ashes. The Sunbury cricketing tradition started in 1882 when Sir William Clarke, President of the Melbourne Cricket Club, invited the visiting English team to stay at his home - Rupertswood. At dinner after a cricket match in the grounds between England and the estate staff, Lady Clarke presented the English Captain with a pottery urn that was purported to contain the ashes of a burnt bail. Australian and England play cricket for The Ashes to this day.

If it wasn't so in the middle of nowhere, I'd agree.

I took a 5-for there once!

*zing!*

Don't worry Sami, I've seen the sort of contests women put up in sporting events. I just don't know if Pillows and greasy poles are appropriate on the football field. And, unless we get a wet day and a bog on the centre wicket, I think your options are limited.

I'm going to go back to 1952 now......

One of these days, Sami.... one of these days!... straight to the moon!!!

We'd have to pay a pretty big fee.
Better off having a run around on a ground that we can have a kick on for free.

I'd check that if I were you, PJ. I organised a game there in 2003 and had no problems - and that was Easter weekend

Are you talking about Optus Oval or the oval next to it?

We tried to organise a game to be played at Optus Oval last year and they were going to charge a fair bit to cover insurance.

Optus Oval. Times may have changed a tad since then, I guess.

Having said that, Collo used to feed my cat so I guess I may have got a bit of a favour there. Although you would think it would be me owing him the favour - seeing as he was feeding my cat. Hmm ... I'll think on that one for a while

Anyway, perhaps you could use your resources like Synbad, Mark, Caz etc to put in a good word? I'm afraid I don't really have anything to do with the hierarchy anymore so wouldn't be able to help you

PJ, another location we used [in 2002] was an oval in Brunswick [in great nick, too]. I can't remember the name of it but I seem to remember it being on the western side of Sydney Road. That didn't cost us anyhting.

Also, in 2001 we played on the oval off royal Parade - other side of Optus Oval and up a bit - can't remember the name either. Having said that, we got kicked off there one year because of insurance problems so there you go.

Maybe the Brunswick St oval?

Tried to get it last year through Mark and they said we'd have to pay a substantial fee.

The game venue is Glenferrie.

We can use the oval next to Optus Oval for the training run. Everyone who is playing knows where it is so it's not hard for everyone.

Ah! Perhaps I should have read more before posting! You're after a training ground. Sorry

The ground next to OO will have cricket on it on the weekend. They also dont like you wearing footy boots on it in cricket season. Plenty of grounds and parkland nexdt to it though.

The Brunswick st oval is a good'n. Cricket may be a prob again though.

No.
If you read back a page or two you'll find it will most likely be held on the 23rd. The Sunday before the Sunday of the match.

If we can't get Princes Park 1, we could slways use the grassland area next to it. It's pretty open and isn't used for any sport.

Or alternatively we can go and have a kick at Fawkner Park on St.Kilda Road.

Does anyone else have any alternatives?

If Princes Park 1 has cricket on it, I'm sure we can find some free space close to it. It's a pretty big park.

There's quite a few ovals in Noble Park. I'm sure they're free on that weekend :D Close to public transport too.
