With Thornton's injury sidelining him for at least 8 weeks, would there be any chance that one of the rookies, preferably a tall, would be elevated in Bret's absence?

The talls on the rookie list are...

Setanta O'hAilpin
Aisake O'hAilpin
Daniel Batson
Sam Plemming

Aisake is far from ready and is still finding his feet in the VFL.
Batson, like Aisake, is a project player and will need time.

That leaves Sammy and Setanta.

Recent form would suggest that Setanta would get the nod over Sammy.
However, for those training regs and VFL regs, would we benefit from having Plemmo elevated?

Or is Setanta the more logical choice?

Or do none of them warrant a promotion at all?

don't you need the injury to be deemed long term?

Not sure what that is defined to be. If 8 weeks is enough, then I'm surprised that it hasn't all ready occured.

Yeah you do.
I just automatically assumed that due to the fact that he was out for 2 months that meant he was deemed as a Long Term Injured Player.

Hmm, I like your thinking pj.

My vote goes to Carlos. Tough decision though, but he appears to have embraced every challenge thrown at him so far, why not give him the biggest one of his life.

If we put Bret on he would have to miss 8 rounds of football.

It's hugely conceivable that he'll play before then so we wont

As most of you know, Bret is a pretty important cog in our structure.
Saturday will give us a good example of just how much we will miss him.

In saying that, I want Bret to take as much time as he needs to get his knee right.
If he plays within that 8 week range, I will be very suprised.

He needs to make sure it is 100% right.

He's meant to miss 6-8 weeks, it'll be 2 weeks already by Round 1 and he's a fit young guy

It's a catch-22 really. Like pj I don't want T-bird rushing back too quickly, and I have faith in the club medicos that this won't happen, but if he's likely to be out for the required length of time then I reckon we should take advantage of the rules available and promote a rookie.

All I saw was a pic of AD and AA holding hands.

Very disturbing.

Clause 12.1 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement states:

Quote:
Each AFL Club may apply to the AFL General Manager – Football Operations to transfer a Player suffering a long term injury from its Primary List to its Long Term Injury List. A long term injury means an injury or illness suffered by a Player which, in the opinion of the AFL Medical Officer, after consultation with the AFL Club Medical Officer, will prevent or is likely to prevent a Player, having due regard to his health and safety, from participating in a Match for a period of not less than eight weeks from the date the injury or illness is diagnosed.

Other relevant provisions are that:
a player cannot be placed on the LTI list unless he consents (cl. 12.2(a))
a player who is on the LTI list cannot play any AFL or VFL football match while he is on that list or for 8 weeks, whichever is the greater (cl. 12.2(b))

So, don't assume that Carlton will be able to engineer a spot for Setanta by foxing the AFL Medical Officer.
Thornton (or indeed Fisher) might not be willing to agree to an effective 8 week playing ban given that he would be looking forward to Rounds 6 and 7 against Hawthorn and Richmond, or at least playing in the VFL to regain match fitness during those rounds.

And even if he consents, we still need the approval of Adrian Anderson.

On a previous occasion, I rang Carlton and I was told that a decision on LTI listings could not be made until immediately before the start of the season. At that time, Carlton will need to persuade the AFL Medical Officer that Thornton or Fisher will not be likely to be able to play an AFL or VFL match for a further 8 Matches (and we can't claim credit for the games Fisher missed last year).

PJ, the CBA can be found at http://www.aflpa.com.au.

You can figure out what is in the AFL Rules from this, at least in certain respects. It would be nice to locate the AFL Rules themselves, but they seem to be a State secret. If you find them, tell me where to find them please

At the Family day on Sunday I was lucky enough to have a good chat with Col, Shane o, and Libba.

The story from the 3 of them was that as much as we read here that Carlos is ready.... Truth is He aint and unles there is a dramatic change of thought, a realistic look in at the ones will come for him late this year or early next year.

As one of them reminded me..." He's only played the game for half a year. Plenty of good times ahead ... the same vain as Waite... remember he was the only one not to play in that black year yet he's still on the list unlike a lot of others

They are probably trying to take the heat off him and ease expectations from us more than anything else. But I am sure it is a matter of when rather than if for Carlos, however if it is not 2005 he will have to be drafted onto the Primary List for 2006 if we want to keep him as he is only allowed 2 years on the Rookie List.

he's probably better off in the VFL at the moment as he is still learning the game. that said however I have it on good authority that he was gutted to not be playing in WC this season

seems that Pagan will definitely wait and see before a promotion....people have to 'earn' a spot ((even Carlos has to re-earn it)...
