And if he hadn't gone off the rails wd he have made one point difference in the 2010 gf? Lyon mortgaged the future for the present at the Sts and was within a kick, an ounce of luck, of two flags with a list inferior to his opponents. Most sides wd take a rebuild after two flags. And Freeo got Sylvia for nothing and gumby for next to nothing. When it comes to trading and recruiting few come close to us for bad decisions resulting in sustained failure, over the last 15 years. The fact that we are so often justifying our failures by comparing them to other clubs failures says something abt where we are at

If we land a Boyd type in the next 2 years...delicious.

Are those goal returns per game or per year?

Per one game per year...

Perhaps

You must adore and worship Alan Joyce and Tony Jewell

Who is a better coach Mr S, Ross Lyon or John Longmuire?

Only one them has a flag in the back pocket.

Who has contributed creatively more to the game, Malthouse, Blight or Walls?

(IMO opinion 1. Walls, 2. Blight, 3. Malthouse - in reverse order of the number of flags won, Inverse proportionality Mr S)

Interesting that Tom Mitchell was dropped.. Has no intention of leaving but must be thinking twice now... Can be a fringe player at sydney or a 200 hundred game player for us..
Wonder if we can land, kristian Jaksch and Tom Mitchell???

Clubs are about flags, coaches are about getting the best out of the playing group and making the whole greater than the sum of the parts and if you have the best list and luck, you will win flags. Malthouse coached well at the Dogs and didn't get a flag and then has had the luxury of a decade at two wealthy well resourced clubs. Eade didn't win a flag but he got remnarkable performances from a list with massive holes. Mick hae been a successful coach but as Leigh Mathews always says, invariably the flag coach has the best talent. The really great coaching efforts are when you win with less talent. Carlton 1987. Malthouse had one of the best collection of players assembled with the Eagles and won two flags but did they under achieve in the other years of the 1990s? They lost a lot of finals after 1994. Lyon was in front in time on in two gf's, the result then is about luck. And recent history is important. Is Malthouse as good in 2014 as in 2001/2 when he got ordinary teams to gfs? But the idea that if you coach a flag you are inevitably better than a coach who doesn't is nonsense.

The only thing relevant is that in 2014 we had a very poor year and the coach didn't get the best from the list. He needs to get a lot better or we need a new coach. Telling us about what he did with a team of superstars in 1992 isn't going to win us a flag any more than getting Ron Barrassi back will turn us into a side as dominant as the Blues from 68-72.

so forget past results its only the present that matters - just like world wars really, they'll never happen again.

I asked an afl MVP player who is the 2nd best coach in the league. His coach being the best. He responded with Ross Lyon because he took an average list to 2 grand finals.
Before considering 2014 a bad one for mm, think about how many seasons it took Thompson, barrassi to win premierships and compare that to our clubs "win now without building the list" mentality pre malthouse

mick took many average lists to many gfs and won
think about collingwood v brisbane and the salary cap advantage brissy had

think about the players geelong an hawthorn had when mick won a flag and made gfs

but ultimately unless ross wins a flag... mick will always be the superior coach

and he has longevity

try ass u might you cant take all those things away from him...

micks a smart guy.... hes capable .

i was a doubter too...he turned me around early 2000 AND late 2000s
right now im comfortable with him in charge... Lets see what happens.. we all achnowledge this is not a great position to be in talent and mental competitiveness.

Lets see what he does...
