SOS; who with Sean Wellman will be Assistant Coaches to Rodney Eade at the Western Bulldogs; is using the experience to gauge whether he is up to a Senior Coaching role.

So we've got SOS; Peter Dean and also Brett Ratten out there coaching; and wouldn't it be great to see one of them back at PP one day as Coach of Carlton?

SOS is a great guy, and probably knows his stuff.

But gee, is there a more boring bloke to listen to? I'd fall asleep in his pre-match addresses.

No doubt he is using his Bulldogs role as a stepping stone for bigger things but I'm not sure about him being senior coaching material at this stage...more of a specialist coach I would have thought...however saying all that I never expected the relaxed layed back approach of Paul Roos to be successful....

SOS can't be THAT boring....have you had a look at the girl who married him?....

Actually; Sticks is inclined to drone on and on a bit too; a conversation between him and SOS would be riveting; do you agree?

Yep - a Sale of the Century model who graduated to doing ZootReview grocery commercials. I guess they were attracted to each other's rivetting intellect.

I loved SOS the footballer (probably the second best backman I've seen) but I haven't heard him say one thing as a commentator that makes me think that he's not just a little thick. I think he's probably ideally suited to one on one coaching about how to move your body and outmuscle your opponent and so on but as for running a football department and actually coaching on matchdays - I just can't see it at the moment.

I think you're right on that. He'd make a great assistant coach. Fantastic improvement in LRT this year and he worked with Rivers from Melbourne the year before that.

Which backman do you rate higher than SOS?

Do some research on his 3/4 time address during the 1999 Preliminary Final.

It could just be decieving, I agree with GWS that he never has anything tactical or worthwhile to say when he is commentating...I'ts a whole lot of obviousness...with some obviously's.

But who knows really. Why would he be employed otherwise...just cos he is SOS?

Because of his name, and because he's a good looking fella! There's a lot of people on tv who look good, but have very little upstairs. (Although it's far less common for 'commentators' to fit this category.)

Wasn't old enough to fully appreciate Doull as I didn't see enough of him, so need to bow to your more informed judgement on this :-D

For mine SOS is easily the best backman I've ever seen play and I rate him very highly in the best players I've seen over 20 years.

They're obviously different types of players playing in different positions so it's hard to make any sort of make a definitive judgement but...

I was discussing this with someone earlier and neither of us could really remember Doull @#$%&! up until his final year when he started to make the occasional mistake. I remember that year well because it was such a bizarre sight to see the great Bruce Doull make a mistake.

Silvagni was the best full back I've seen but he did get cleaned up occasionally. That said Doull never went to full forward and kicked 10.

Then again Bruce was probably the most supremely balanced footballer you'd ever see and his disposal crapped all over Silvagni's which was solid but nowhere near Bruce's league. Bruce was in Greg Williams league and if he'd played in the current era you probably would have seen him thrown onto the ball as a tall midfielder every now and then (I would love to have seen that!).

All up - two different players, two great careers, two Team of the Century members.

As for commentary - I reckon SOS could do worse than to follow Bruce's lead and say nothing.

I actually think the best fullback in Carlton's history was Geoff Southby.
And as far as SOS's booringness, well he did his apprenticeship with Captain Obvious Robert Wall's.What did you expect ?

Too early to tell but sos doesnt seem senior coach material to me.
its a shame the way footy is structured now and budding senior AFL coaches can't coach in the bush rather than just a back line.

Did anyone else see this part?
