But what else is he going to say!
Dempsey back with a spring in his step- The Age

Quote:
Dempsey back with a spring in his step

By Lyall Johnson
November 12, 2005

When Gary Dempsey, Carlton's new ruck coach, last week nudged Adrian Deluca under the ball and easily tapped down to assistant coach Tony Liberatore, there was little to indicate how such a move was looking virtually impossible just over 12 months ago…

Carlton is forging a unit that includes Barnaby French, Deluca, former Brisbane Lion Dylan McLaren, Chris Bryan, Daniel Batson and Irishmen Setanta and Aisake O'hAilpin. Dempsey likes what he sees.

"Barnaby French is far more than competent, he's had a lot of injuries and I see him as a good base to work with the young blokes," he said. "You've got the two young Irish blokes, they're tall, you've got Deluca and you've got Dylan McLaren. So Carlton have got a lot of tall young timber."

Deluca was a Melbourne fan as a lad and followed Jim Stynes. In recent years he has done his homework with video tapes of the older ruckmen to analyse their techniques.

"Gary obviously had a great career and in the few times he has come down I have already learnt a lot from him. He's just focusing on the actual tap work, out-bodying opponents and just the art, trying to teach us the techniques he was so successful at," Deluca said. "Hopefully if we can be half the player he was, I'm sure we'll go a long way."

But Barney doesn't look too impressed with Gary's silent but deadly skill!

Thanks for the link/article Juzz. I just gave your quote a bit of an edit to keep The Age punters happy.

I dont think he's saying anything other than guys are tall. Which is a nice first step to being a ruckman, but he doesnt say anything about hw good they are other than Frenchy!

As for Deluca wouldn't worry too much - he isnt there as a ruckman, more as a marking forward. Would be nice if he could ruck thouhg. Would also be nice if h could play as a marking forward for a season

Be nice if he could actually mark, too...

It would help his development though if he got some rucking skills.

ADL is acually a very nice kick, now all he has to do is learn to play as a marking forward.

Dempsey was one of the best around. The old dog still has a few tricks under his collar. ;)

You don't get many 22-23 yr old ruckmen beating the 26-28 yr olds. It is something that you learn IMO. Bryan and Deluca still have time I reckon....

Wait until DeLuca is about 25 before we start talking about delisting him.
