And before everyone says that collingwood are a special case with eddie etc, please remind yourselves that we have always taken pride in the fact that Carlton is special and different as well.

That's about as silly as it gets rubbernub.

Anyone who's had anything to do with running a business knows that your yearly result has as much to do (if not more) with the years leading up to it as the year itself.

I don't doubt that Collingwood are earning more than Carlton at the moment but don't forget the following:

1. Collingwood has cash in the bank built up over a number of years which provides additional income.

2. Carlton has debts built up over a number of years which provides additional expenses.

I'm not suggesting we're outperforming the Pies financially but the figures would be a whole lot closer if neither club had the benefit/hindrance of the last 5-10 years.

Collingwood were a basket case when Eddie took over and he's done well to turn it around but it didn't happen in 2-3 years. Collo's starting from way way way further back both on-field and off-field and whilst things are starting to improve, there's absolutely no way we'd be in any sort of position to challenge where Collingwood's at at the moment financially regardless of who was leading our club for the last three years

Fair words Mr.GWS and inmy view we were a muchbigger basket than the Pies.

Talk to Pies fans at the moment - they still think 2005 was a 1 off and they should be in the finals. 2002-2003 still stays in their minds and Pies fans have been ,living off those years since. Injuries, though a fair excuse at times, roll off Pie tongues.

This keeps them signed up.

This, plus a very public vocal McGuire, keeps the cash rolling in.

Not saying that we'll ever be up there with the Pies again, but they're still on a roll. When the cashflow position stablises and / or COllins hands over, we'll be able to market alot more and hopefully get the 33000 up to 40000 members, especially if our youth turn out to be special. Thats what we have to hope for I guess.

The Pies onfield situation is seriously dire ATW.

I reckon they have by far the worst list in the AFL at the moment and they really don't realise it.

Take a look at their best 10-15 players under 22 (who should make up the core of their team in 3 years time and compare it with ours. Ours wins by a mile. They've got a better group over 26 than we do but a number of those guys aren't going to be around for much longer and then there's stuff all to replace them. The only player they've got in the last few years who looks like he'll be a very good player is Travis Cloke. The rest are very, very ordinary footballers.

If you chose the best 10 players under 22 between the two clubs I don't think you'd be able to fit a Collingwood player in there bar Travis.

This is off topic and perhaps yours was a throw -away line but No one is suggesting Mclaren is a superstar NOR THE SAVIOUR but can we give the guy a chance he hasnt even played a game for us yet
Not sure why we are denigrating him yes he is not a Nick Stevens but given our list he is definitely the best player available in the pre-season draft and he might end up being an Elmer Fudd but at least give him a chance to prove or disprove that assessment
Can we at least acknowledge that getting a 23 year old ruckman who was taken in the top 10 of his draft year and has played in a grand final is a reasonable get by a club that is struggling

McLaren was overlooked in the 2000 draft, he was picked up No 9 in the Pre-season Draft.

an article (Age?) recently said he was a top 10 draftee, but it was wrong.

Agree with Frank...Mclaren isnt a superstar but will be handy and we need to wait until he plays a few games before we stick the knife in.
I think he is the best player available from the retred basket and can maybe play several positions....lets see how he goes.

RE: The Pies and money...eddie give him his due knows how to attract the corporate dollar and its hard for us to compete when he gives the pies such a marketing advantage with his media profile and resources.

Essendon* have really impressed me with their continuing financial success, it hasnt related or been driven by on field success but they seem to generate good profits every year and were leaders in making a dollar long before eddie jumped on board Collingwood..in fact we fell of the pace and became third world when Essendon* were setting the pace off field as well as on and we should have followed their lead back then....
