Wonder how much interest Armfield has had as a free agent? Surely there'd be a team there that would see him as decent list depth?

Small forward is a specialist role. No different to inside midfielder. Its a skill that players naturally have.
Cripps understands where and when the ball is coming off the ruck mans hands. His timing is extraordinary. You could teach a player that stuff for 10 years and he still wouldn't be as effective.
The same for small forwards. Dale Thomas is a wingman. He would roughly suffice as a small forward but he'd be nowhere near as good as a specialist.
We should look to draft a small forward instead of "making do" with what we have.

..I think midfield roving types can easily double as small forwards, and will be fitter and more versatile..

I'm with BV, the best are absolute specialists and have innate abilities to conjure something out of nothing.

Pace and extreme agility along with strong hands and a cat like ability are attributes of the best small forwards.

CARLTON legend David Parkin has declared the Blues’ list as one of the worst he’s ever seen.

Parkin, who started his decorated career with Hawthorn in 1961, said newly appointed coach Brendon Bolton faced an enormous task to rebuild the Blues.

"That list in profile, in my humble opinion is the worst in the competition now and probably one of the worst I’ve ever seen in my entire association with the game," Parkin told Crocmedia.

Yet that list with a massive injury list has won 4 games, go figure Parko.

We could say the list you left Carlton with denigrated into the worst list of all time, then we have something to talk about. Pagan though made it the worst.

Parko is just putting it out there to protect Bolton in his first few years, buying him some time.

Hard to argue with him. I think he is right

That's what I thought.

Bolton will be fine as he has a good foundation to build on, and a draft we are part of in a big way.

Smith in his last game showed a little in this spot. I thought he seemed dangerous and certainly zippy on a few occasions.

I like him. The fitter he gets the better he will be. Very good defensively as well. As for Thomas he actually started as a small forward and progressed to the midfield. I think he has all the attributes of a very good small forward.

If Bolton follows the Hawthorn model we will need multiple options working hard both ways. Casboult as the big man (ala Roughead) supported by Walker, Everitt, Jaksch, Thomas & Smith plus the mids could work well.

Swap Everitt for Menzel and I would agree. Everitt only runs 1 way and is a huge liability. We have learnt to hide him in the pocket to utilise any advantage we can get. Not the future.

I agree about Everitt. As I have said I have major concerns about Menzel.
