Has to be Bert Thornley. Barrassi pulled him off the ground in the 70 Grand Final when he wasn't apparently injured (before interchange) and pulled the masterstroke of throwing Teddy Hopkins (now of Champion Data fame) into the fray. Met him and his son at a preseason function last year in Brisbane. He is now a fisherman up in North Queensland. Lovely guy. Don't know how many games he played though, but would bet he is not well known.

Brizzy,i actually believe that ignoring the obvious(Hopkins replacement in the GF) that Bert Thornley was very well known to Carlton supporters of the time.

Both he and Syd Jackson had big wraps on them when we signed them from WA but unfortunately IIRC, both had to stand out of Footy for a year or so.

That was of little benefit to Bert as he was that little bit older and generally he failed to recapture his WA form..

Ike Little. Anyone heard of him?

8 games & 5 goals in the 1906 season.

Ike Little
Full Name: Isaac Dalton Little
Born: 19/1/1888 in Hotham East
Died: 14/6/1945 in Fitzroy
Parents: Edward and Rebecca
Recruited From: North Melbourne VFA
206th Carlton Player

Played in the forward pocket for 7 of his 8 games, once at full back. 7 of the 8 games he played in were wins, the one loss was the only game he played at full back when South Melbourne pounded through 12 goals. His first game was against Geelong in Round 10. His last game was the 1906 Grand Final in which he kicked one of Carlton's 15 goals.

Bit more than you can get from the Encyclopedia of Australian Footballers.

And he followed in the footsteps of a great number of Carlton Players and retired to the SunnyHills Retirement Home for Footballers at Linton St, Moorabbin.

In relation to Your thoughts on Chandler he was named on the bench for 68 and 70 grand finals and only the 72 grannie did he start on the ground. The fact is that he played very little of the 300 miutes total game time yet was part of 3 premierships.Good on him but you have to admit it is unusual.

As for your view on Francis he did play 158 games which is a fine effort, but after his game in the 79 grannie he certaintly didnt fulfill his potential. In fact when he played for the tiges against us at prinnie park one day the outer were all very pleased he was in yellow and black.
An interesting fact on Chandler is he missed the 69 grannie( dont know why) never appeared in the best players for Carlton in a final, kick a grand total of 4 finals goals. Oh yes and he did appear on the team list in 1973 and dominater guess what position he was on the team sheet. Yes thats right 20th man

Could to see people backing up their opinions with a bit of thought and research.

Statistics don't always show the true picture.Chandler had just turned 19 in the 68 flag but was a good contributor in both 70 & 72.Seems to me you have to be more than lucky to play in a side that payed in 5 Grand finals in 6 years(for 3 wins).I was at all those games and he was not a passenger when he played.

I am not sure how many games you saw Chandler play Keogh, but take it from me he was a very handy player far better than his 76 games might suggest..

For pseudo/un-named Carlton Grand Final players it is always hard to go past Ray Boyanich in 1972.An ageing and struggling John Nicholls plonked himself in the Forward Pocket on Boyanich.Big Nick kicked 6 and the rest is history.

That was Boyanich's last game for the Tigers. It certainly was one of his best for the Blues!

Keogh, Francis was one of my favourites as kid and when you look at the sides we had around 79 you would have had to been an abosolute star to stand out. I love watching old replays of these games 1/4 of a century later and I can still call their names out like it was yesterday.

Francis kicked one of the best and most important goals in GF history. Played a blinder that day, and his not fulfilling his potential probably had as much to do with Wes Lofts' unfathomable obsession with Frank marchesani as anything else.

Barry Mulcair should bolt in this thread.

Played in the Bendigo League most of 1970; came down to Carlton and after having played only 2 Reserves games was selected to play in the 1970 Grand Final which was his first Senior game!

He played 19 games in 1971 and went home to Bendigo.

Are you sure? I dont think his first senior game was the 70 Grand Final.

One of the things all you Francis lovers havent mentioned is the actual day.It was a bog and it suited Francis down to a tee.Dont forget what the thread is about. How many games did Francis play for Carlton and if he was that flower great then why did we let him go at his prime.

Sorry Keogh but the subject was most unknown Carlton Premiership player.
I would have thought Francis hardly filled this criteria..
A) Most thought he played a great game in ,79 and most would remember him
B) Supporters unanimously agreed that he was hard done by in the Frank M switch.
C) His 157 games with 3 Clubs did'nt put his in the unknown bracket.

Maybe i am wrong but the thread was not about a slag off the Carlton player.Perhaps i am wrong?

P.S. I find it interesting that you still are a contrarian on Chandlers ability.I make it you were about 5 when he played in first GF and 10 on his departure.Seems difficult for me to reconcile that with your adamant position?

I wouldn't put my house on it mate.. but....that's how he's recorded in the "Encyclopedia of AFL/VFL Footballers"....I am very vague on anything to do with Mulcair personally; but I have every Newspaper and Magazine report of the game from 1970, both previews and reviews; and when I get a minute I'll swot up on the game and hopefully Mulcair....impossible right now!

OK....I've just checked "The Sporting Globe" of September 26 -1970.

The 1970 GF was Barry Mulcair's 13th game (of 19)....he travelled from Bendigo to train and play for all of his time at Carlton.

AGRO....your doubt was deserved!....well done to pick that up! .... :-D

Ross Ditchburn is a contender for this title, particularly as he was knocked out early in 1982 GF proceedings.

From left field, I'd also throw in Phil Maylin. A more than handy on-baller who talent was overshadowed by the likes of Buckley, Sheldon, Johnson, Marcou, Ashman, Harmes etc.

The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers entry on Mulcair is very ambiguous - I was going on memory. Although as you probably know a few years later in the 1973 Grand Final Vinnie Cattogio made his senior debut.

The 73 grannie was Vinny's third game, though the first as a member of the starting 18. He'd been on the bench a couple of times that season.

Going on my memory (unreliable as it is).
