Okay the definate inside midfielders are Bentick, Kouta ( :? ) and probably Carrazzo.
Blackers, Tex, Murph and maybe Eddie probably need another year of development before they are full time inside midfielders while Stevens, Scotland, Simmo and skinny are the outside midfielders. People will throw up names such as Davies and Houla but as much as I would like to see them make the grade there’s still A LOT of ??????’s with them that need to be answered before I include them with the definite starters above.

My question is, was it a mistake not to promote Jesse Smith to the primary list as another insider? Going by training reports and photos it seems he’s really coming along in leaps and bounds. Other than a long term injury, how can we get him on the primary list next year?

Definately should have promoted him and dropped Sporn, Davies or Wiggo...he is wasted talent on the rookie list...!

Budzy - I live In Darwin and so haven't had much chance to see Jesse play or train. However, wouldn't he be just another one on that development list you have that needs another year? (With MM, Blackers, Walker, etc). Not saying your idea doesn't have merit at all - but maybe the club want him to develop in the VFL as they already have enough developmental on-ballers in the main comp?

From the few times I saw him on TV I don't think he's ready for seniors. ANother development year in the VFL is what he needs imo.

No doubt the club thought he needed more development when they extended his time on the rookie list. I'm just posing the question whether they've been a bit cautious with Jessie because I get the impression he's just about right to go and we desperately need more assistance in the inside midfield department.

Setanta deserved the promotion and should have been promoted earlier...Jessie is a good colt and I expect him to get on the senior list at some stage..I dont think he is any further behind in his development than Blackwell, Russell etc...played some good footy for the Bullants...needs to work on his disposal but is brave and knows how to get the footy

The club had no choice about promoting Setanta. He couldn't stay on the rookie list so they couldn't promote Jesse ahead of him.

I think Jesse will get his chance at some stage.

Bentick will be given every opportunity to sew up the primary ball winners spot.
With him possibly changing with Kouta (off the bench?), we cannot afford any more one paced midfielders on the park.
Jesse's time will come but let him force his way into the side.

Houlihan has played over 100 games at Carlton and is 23 years old so I think he has made it - not perhaps an inside midfielder but to put him on the same level as Davies seems curious - out of all the players you named apart from kouta stevens and lappin none are as skilled as Houlihan and none at the moment as good user of the ball - yes he has other well recognised DEFICIENCIES which have been discussed on this forum - but whilst I like all the players you mentioned apart from Kouta stevens and lappinnone are as a matter of objective fact as good as houla
If we could have houlihan weaving his magic in the midfield rotation we will be a better side.

Promote or de-list.

We had no choice about retaining him on the rookie list.

Yeh got that bit. We had two options as you stated, hence we had a choice. :-D

Funny. :garthp:

He sounds like a decent player, does JesseD. Matter of fact, whenever I think about him that song by Rick Springfield rams its way into my brain.

But I reckon he'll be promoted at the end of 2006.

Jessie is working hard to address his deficiencies.
He has brought his skinfolds right down.. (he used to have a bit of puppyfat)... and he has slashed .12 seconds of his 20 meter sprint over the pre season.

He adds much needed mongrel (along with Bentick)...

Great kid!
