I think he is just a tad....maybe next years his go?

An article from Footygoss debates it.

Bah humbug … AW will be just fine IMO. If that article had any merit whatsoever it would have gone into some detail on the aspects of his game that need improving rather than relying on a simplistic statistical view.

Is Andrew Walker disappointing?

I haven't slept with him so I wouldn't really know

Might be worth it from a celebrity root POV though - go for it!

-If he was on $500,000 per year
-If he was 6kg overweight
-If he lacked enthusiasm
-If he finished in the back of the pack of the run

THEN YES

- he isn't
- he is not
- he doesn't
- he didn't

SO NO

Camelboy; I agree with you in essence about AW, however; IMO he hasn't produced yet at the same level as Adam Cooney who preceded him in the draft; and I think most Carlton supporters would be just a tad disappointed with his footy since that stellar debut.

I submitted the Footygoss article purely because it was about a Carlton player.

Without trying to be too subjective here, it is crap to use the old 'Others selected in the top ten are performing' chestnut. Why is it that ruckmen are acknowledged to blossom in their 20s, yet it seems midfielders etc must be as good as Cooney [for e.g.] was / is 'at that age'.

I'm mindful that I might be making an excuse for him because he's 'one of ours' but I try to keep an open mind about ALL players in the footy [except for N Brown - who appears to me to be a wanker]. Granted he must perform consistently well at some stage - it would just be nice if an 18 or 19 year old were allowed to grow into their bodies like ruckmen seem to be allowed to do

And according to the article this year's draftees will put pressure on his position rather than improving the quality of team. :garthp:

Quote:
Melbourne snapped up ready-made stars Colin Sylvia (#3 overall) and Brock McLean (#5), while Kepler Bradley (#6), Kane Tenace (#7) and Raphael Clarke (#8) were also selected in the top ten. Most of these players have been regularly selected in their senior sides and have proven to be valuable assets.

Walks has played more games than everyone on that list except for Cooney and I'd love to see how some of them would perform in the worst side for the past 4 years.

The word disappointing requires an expectation, so the answer to the question is different depending on everyone's expectation.

What's my expectation? That he'll be a STAR at age 21,22,23 - seomthing like that. He's what, 19?

Reading these posts the only proof of disappointment is that he's been overtaken by those taken in the same draft. That's it. He'd admit to that, its probably fact.

If that article is the standard at footygoss then heaven help them.
Looks as though it was written by a 10yo.

Footygoss is just another footy site trying to find something to write about at this time of year.

I admit that I'm a bit too impatient with AW at age 19; it's unfair.

I suppose we've had so little to enthuse about that we're inclined to expect too much from our kids.

Unfortunately; he did show so much in that first game 2 years ago, and set a level for himself that may be hard for him to consistently reproduce in the future.

I really hope he can.

Isn't he a year younger? I can't understand why anyone would be disappointed - he's 19!!!

Why should Walker be at the same level as Cooney? On the surface of it maybe it is a reasonable comparison, but in reality if Walker was at the same level as Cooney how would that affect our current plight? Do you think Walker won't make it?

Cooney had senior experience with Centrals in Adelaide, his body is both more mature and used to playing with stronger bodies. Walker needs time, if he takes one year, two years, even three years to reach Cooney's level will that really harm our development greatly?

Walker biggest disappointment to date was his scorching debut as now people think he is going backwards if he doesn't play like that every week. He has skill, pace and youth. Something our team lacks. Yes, I would say his skill does need work, but it's there, he just needs to improve his consistency.

He'll be alright. We need him firing in around 2-3-4 years, when hopefully we're a much more competitive unit, if he's not dominating games before then but is still improving that's fine with me.

Those in the disappointing camp must be watching a different game to me.

AW is not far from unleashing. Some extra support in the MF (and him not having to account for Campo's man as well as his own) and further improvement will see him really kick along this year I reckon.

One thing's for sure, when he does let fly it'll make for some kick-arse viewing. :-D

When he was first recruited many on TBV talked him up as the next big thing in footy. So quite a lot was expected from him, from some of the stuff I read he was expected to singlehandedly win ever game off his own boot. Hence the unrealistic expectations placed on him.

Two years down the track and those who believed what they read about AW are disappointed that he hasn't lived up to "expectations" of him.

I more disapointed in the early hype about AW( not perpetuated by him) rather than his perfromance to date.

He would go okay if he was allowed to play like Delidio and Cooney have been allowed to do. Walker seems to have been hamstrung by the roles he has been given. It may be for the better it may ruin his career . Only time will tell
