Yeah but you cant cling to AW as your only hope.
Your disapointmment comes from a side that lacks a backbone .. that has nothing to do with AW.. and more to do with the blokes at the top.

How can you be disappointed in AW aged 19 and lick up the shit some of the blokes that should be leadiers serve up?
thats what i want to know!

By the way, those lauding his game against Akermanis......you are joking arent you.Walker may have been in his face alnight....so what.Aker wracked up the stats and kept going till the end.Akermanis actually took him to the cleaners that night and if you think Walker did well.....then all i can say is you are easily impressed.

Just on that game Walker had 17 disposals, 6 tackles, 3 marks and a goal.

Aker who was in Brownlow winning form at the time had 18 disposals, 7 tackles, 3 marks and a goal. The stats may not the tell the story of Aker's game but he didn't rack up the stats as you said.

And Aker should have done more given the result and the quality of the opposition.

Walker = gun.

Synbad I'm not blaming him for anything..nor am I bagging him...I'm just dissapointed.

I'm dissapointed with alot of things....as we all probably are.

When I said 'cling to' he was just superb that day and i got my hopes up. I am just a fan who watches from afar, I can't tell you what's going on within the club and who's a leader and who isn't or the reasons why we lack them .....but I could see a shining light that day it came at a time where there was nothing else...so It has just effected me somewhat.

It will change i'm assuming once the spotlight is on our new guys...I'ts starting to get brighter for us...

I know where you're coming from BigBlind: the kids still learning the trade....we all know that, but we're still starved of excitement machines at Carlton; and we know he's got that "Potential Superstar" aura about him.

Kouta pre knee injury was the last Carlton player to really stir the senses and create that buzz of excitement everytime he went near the
ball....who could ever forget that very first one handed pick up and pirouetting out of the pack?

As Bruce would say ....SPECIAL !

I'm confident he will be a great player for us, and hope that the next time he really turns it on; it will be against you know who!

Do you know I'm a fan of Walker? My apologies for the dodgy screen caps.

One of the things that shits me about the current system is that players don't get the development time they used to. It used to be that most players took 30-50 games to start to get a feel for the AFL. Some gun players stepped up immediately, but most took some time.

Walker has been serving his apprenticeship, i'd hope to see some improvement this year, but he should be producing the goods by the end of 2007. If he wasn't then I would be concerned.

Hopefully as the list improves in quality over the next few seasons it won't be so difficult for the new players coming into the side - the side might be able to carry 1 or 2 players in the 22 who are learning the caper

I really don't like this thread. In my opinion, if anyone's disappointed in AW, it's because they have very unrealistic expectations. He's going OK and will be on an upward curve until he's 22/23.

I think our expectations were somewhat influenced by his debut... :?

That's our mistake, not Andrew's.

Could we adjust our expectations?

I think in this instance that expectations are not a mistake; but a hope.

OK, we HOPE that AW becomes a star. A gamebreaker. A guy who can rip games apart singlehanded. But if he takes some time to deliver on OUR hope, or he eventually becomes a good player just a rung below what WE hoped he'd be, do we rip him apart on internet forums?

Warby, I'm not intimating that your original post was 'ripping him apart' but it really concerns me that we'd even be asking this question of a 19 year old. Especially a 19 year old who's had to play his footy in the worst team in the comp.

Seriously, let's look at AW when he's 22 (who remembers Kouta at 19, 20... no-one, because he was doing nothing of note except learning how to play at the top level) and ask questions then.

Let's just enjoy watching this gifted kid develop, without pinning him with OUR hopes and cutting him down if he doesn't deliver on them as quickly as we'd like.

JohnM....Looks like I'll have to repeat one of my subsequent posts from Page 1 for the third time:

I admit that I'm a bit too impatient with AW at age 19; it's unfair.

I suppose we've had so little to enthuse about that we're inclined to expect too much from our kids.

Unfortunately; he did show so much in that first game 2 years ago, and set a level for himself that may be hard for him to consistently reproduce in the future.

I really hope he can.
