The only thing I'm pissed off about regarding Camporeale is the lack of decent journalism relating to his leaving Carlton. I've never been a great fan of the way he played so I'm hardly going to be upset about him choosing to leave now am I?

There's a story that's not being told in all of this. It may be that Carlton fans would rally around Camporeale if the truth came out. They may also want to lynch him. I don't care which way it goes but I'd like to see some level of investigation rather than the garbage that gets served up on a daily basis that's supposed to pass for journalism. It's not journalism - it's shit, pure and simple.

Also, just because you "don't see any other reason why Campo would want to leave so late in his career" doesn't mean one doesn't exist and only serves to prove the point made by Tyrants that many people couldn't give a shit about journalism and are happy accepting the drivel served up by an increasingly unscrupulous and poor quality media.

If you're happy accepting that crap jim then good luck to you. There are coprophiliacs out there who swear by it - I'm just not biting.

I always figured that those that write for the masses are actually hitting most of their market. There are a lot of numbnuts that are satisfied with just reading the Herald Sun for a game review, even though they dont really report the game any more, or for an interview where some guy talks about some inane topic that doesnt really relate to how he focuses on a game, his role in the game, etc. etc.

But those that need more go to a website or go to training and thats why were here. I think you'd be suprised how many people in the office where I work think that the Hun is a great paper.

It's been a gradual thing, and as more money has been pumped into footy it has become an industry...as I said before, the whole caper has been devalued, and that includes coverage/reportage.

I reckon Tyrants was spot-on with his comment about the whole footy media being dumbed-down. Sadly, that fact would hardly even register a blip with the vast majority of punters out there.

I think in days gone by the footy media was divided into journalists and reporters in a fairly even spread, but these days it seems to be heavily weighted towards say-nothing reporters that literally just report what the clubs, coaches, players and forums spoon feed them. There appears to be very little investigation done any more - the real journalists asking the hard questions, as GWS rightly points out, are few and far between.

In their defence, those same clubs, coaches and players very rarely offer a genuinely interesting opinion any more, they all just toe the line with non-answers and fluff. It's like their lips are moving, noise is coming out, but they don't really say anything (if you know what I mean). Or worse still, they simply won't answer a question, particularly anything that may seem remotely controversial.

The press conference circus is so scripted and hum-drum that anyone can see why the coaches would hate it and inevitably give very little (of interest) away. The questions are so predictable and the answers equally so. You'd hope from the 600-700 accredited AFL media personnel out there that someone would be asking the right questions, but it just doesn't seem to be the case.

That said, I totally agree with GWS. I'm sure there is a "real" Campo story out there waiting to be told. I only fear that if some free thinking journo was brave enough to ask those questions they'd simply be met with a good, old fashioned "no comment".

Worse, clubs and coaches threaten any journo who has the temerity to ask any questions which require an answer of anything harder than "yeah, nah, we're just really happy to take the win, and we're looking to the next week and taking it a week at a time", with badgering their employer and holding over their heads a removal of access to certain players, and staff at the club if the paper dares print anything unflattering.

I heard at the MFC Members Information Night that there are more registered AFL journos than registered Federal press corp.

Current AFL writing is shocking. You only need to read one of the team season review or preview pieces, completely devoid of real analysis and chock full of popular generalisations. "Carlton still rely on Kouta and need Lance to watch his weight over summer ..." Thanks for nothing!

I agree that we are not hearing the full Campo story but I cannot imagine one of the key participants, your coach, being too candid or loquacious. Shane Woewodin has copped all manner of hammering, and been called immature for being critical of the two clubs who have moved him on. Is it really any surprise that everyone is staying silent?

I always get upset when people say they know Herald Sun is crap but they buy it for the sport. Seems that a whole lot of garbage is better then a small piece of treasure in most minds. If it wasnt for the internet site I wouldnt read the Sun once in the year

My angle to this is are the Journo's at fault or is it the reluctance of the people involved to come forth with anything of substance.

Everyone seems reluctant to speak out or say their piece. The Nick Stevens / Mark Williams was another one where the truth is hidden.

Maybe they dont want to get involved in legal action, Maybe they just dont want to air their dirty laundry in public. But you are right GWS the information that is feed to the public is poor considering that it is the public that feeds this industry
