On the Couch last night, they pretty much agreed that it was part players part coaching.
They feel the players are making horrendous mistakes, most of which are not game plan / process related.
But at the same time, it was felt the coach isn't 'getting through' to the p;layers, that is about stop making these errors. Classic 'the message aint getting through' issue.
Teague needs to find a way to stop the mistakes, if he doesn't it might be he who cops it as the coach is ultimately responsible.
Personally, I suspect he isn't being tough enough on the players.

I doubt Clarko would accept some of the rubbish some of our leaders have been dishing up. Docherty went half hearted at numerous contests on the weekend.

Yes it’s part players and part coaching but it’s also part list management, part development, part injury management, part head of football, part everything. What can we confidently say the club is doing well?
Playing group? Has talent but still holes everywhere. Barely any of our delisted players end up at other clubs last 4 or so years. Most of our bottom 6 on the weekend wouldn’t play in any of the top 8 sides. No killer instinct within the playing group to stand up in big moments. Defensive running and intent not there. Poor tackling team
Coaching? Our whole setup is amateur hour. First time coach surrounded by John Barker and a number of other assistants that would likely struggle to get a gig elsewhere. Longmire sat on the bench last week as he had Cox and Pyke in the box. Imagine Teague leaving Barker in charge in the box. No discernible defensive structure. Have seen little ability to motivate the players to play with a hard edge. Baffling team selection (Casboult every week etc)
List management? Big $ contracts to McGovern and Williams and to a lesser extent Martin and Saad. 3 of those should be good players but hardly worth the money paid to them. About 4 first round picks tied up in SPS, Dow, LOB, Kennedy and Setterfield. Only one is getting a game at the moment.
Development of players? See above re SPS, Dow etc. IMO this might be the biggest issue at the club.
Injury management? Hard to tell how much is staff and how much is players just breaking down. But how often do we start Rd 1 with a massive injury list.
Head of football Brad Lloyd? Failed to change even one assistant after last year when it was clear to everyone some change was needed. Ticked off on senior coach appointment and big $ contracts referenced above. All of a sudden after a few losses brings in Woosha as a consultant after failing to shuffle assistants at the end of the year. Reactive, not proactive
These are some of the reasons that we are, as Frank put it in another thread, the most disappointing team in the AFL

Can't argue with much of that.
But where to now? No good looking back.
I think the only solution and path forward is for Teague to get stronger with the players and his support coaches.
I'd start with the leaders.
Cripps needs to call out for help when his opponent is running back to goal and he can't go with him. And he needs to improve his ball use. Twice last weekend he as good as gave away 2 goals through terrible disposal.
Saad needs to defend first.
And Docherty, well he needs to seriously question whether he wants to win a premiership, because he has been terrible all year. Early in the year, in several games he dropped crucial marks down back that he would have swallowed with his eyes shut years back, and last weekend's efforts were VFL standard. He is a co-captain of the club and he is not performing anything like a leader.
It starts with the on-field leaders. They need to show the way. They need to step up. They need to play like the high quality leaders we thought they were, and then they can hold the other players accountable. Right now our leaders are not playing high calibre football at all.
Glimmer of hope is that outside of those few errors Cripps actually started to play angry late last week and it was his bast game for the year.

Lot of criticism of Docherty round here....................why,oh why,was he made dual Captain ? ridiculous and weak for mine.No wonder Cripps is getting angry ( great i reckon.hope he gets angrier )................two Captains is neither your arsehole or your elbow.set a wishy washy tone for the year..........i mean, you would follow Cripps into battle wouldn't you.............would you follow Docherty ? not me.Dont get me wrong coz i reckon Docherty is a good player but a mop up sweeper aint leadership material.Give me a eye in the storm type every time..............have a look at all the good leaders of the last twenty years.

Totally agree.
Another stupid decision by an inept club.
Can't stand the dual captain concept. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. A Captain is a Captain, not a Captains.
I would say 99% of the football public, not just Carlton people, when they see Carlton they consciously and subconsciously think CRIPPS as Captain, and not the other guy.
Like you, this is not a criticism of Docherty as a player generally. Before his knee injuries he was a terrific player, an AA. But even then, he made his name as a loose defender.
Cripps should be the captain of this team, and club.

Agree

Fogarty is an in and under player with a good tackle.

Dow showed signs of improvement. Coach doesn't think so?

Poignant.

Our bottom 6 are not even developing players: Gibbons, Cottrell, Levi, Murphy, Fogarty, Setterfield.

List cloggers for a better word....no killer instinct, poor tackling...cottrell is good with the defensive running, but you also need to tackle hard and get that nut too.

The midfield was spent because they don't rotate enough. Swans had tagged walsh so he got 33 possessions but not in space. When they don't rotate they become predictable.

Like Cripps Docherty made 2 big mistakes that led to goals.

He dropped marks in round 1 after he came back on with his shoulder strapped. Hva eto apperciate he was under physical duress. The coach should not have played him on the last line.

Doc has made mistakes, but he's been good apart from that, and has NOT been terrible all year. No way.

He looked fantastic for 2 weeks playing wing. He was also good against Swans apart from that lazy lick off the ground and the fumble.

Yes it is.

You forget why Docherty was made captain. He was the obvious choice when Murph was captain till Crippa had his biggest year (and still is to date) and won the MVP.

Doc was everyone's favourite, then Crippa came along.

Most of us were happy that both were made captains because we (the puunters) couldn't separate them.

From Wikipedia

Quote:
Docherty improved again on previous seasons during 2016, he would go on to play all 22 games for the Blues under new coach Brendon Bolton. Carlton improved from 2015 to notch up seven wins for the season, three more than last year and the Blues ended up finishing 14th on the ladder. Averaging 25 disposals off half-back, he and Kade Simpson forged a strong partnership in defence, making it much harder for the opposition to score.[18] Docherty was rewarded with the John Nicholls Medal as Carlton's best and fairest player,[19] he was also named in the 40-man squad for the All-Australian team and the AFL Players’ Association’s final 22Under22 team.[20] He also took home Carlton's Most Improved Player award.

2017 saw Docherty continue to perform at an elite level. Docherty led the AFL in kicks, marks and was top 5 in overall meters gained and rebounds from defensive 50. Docherty was rewarded for his stellar season with his maiden All-Australian selection in 2017 in the half back line.

Docherty ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during pre-season training on 15 November 2017, and missed the entire 2018 AFL season as a result.[22][23] Despite his injury he was newly endorsed by the playing group as the club's joint vice-captain prior to the season commencing.

In October 2018, Docherty and Patrick Cripps were named the new co-captains of the club.

Quote:
Before the beginning of the 2018 season, he was announced as joint vice-captain of Carlton, along with defender Sam Docherty.[8] Cripps had a magnificent 2018, winning his second Carlton Best and Fairest, All Australian honours and finishing second in AFL MVP voting. Averaging over 29 touches a game, Cripps managed to become the leading contested possession winner for a single season haul, eclipsing Patrick Dangerfield's previous benchmark of 386 with 388. He later re-signed with the club until the end of the 2021 season.

In October 2018, Cripps and Sam Docherty were named Carlton co-captains

Doc and Cripps are not the problem on field, they try their hardest without rotations or their coach lacks to IQ to have defensive game plan.

Maybe off field, they are not great leaders, but who knows what goes on there. If Harry signs on I will be convinced the players want to be at Carlton playing together.

Who cares what the media say, or what opposition supporters think of carlton? I don't/ They hate us

I don't like the 2 captains anymore, and I prefer Cripps TBH, but I remember and understand why it happened when it happened under Bolton.

One captain may be better but its not the reason we are losing by 16-28 points when we lose against top 8 teams. IMO

I am basically fed up with so and so is played out of position
They might line up 6 6 6 but once the ball is bounced apart from Key position forwards and backs they are all midfielders and the game is played out in between the arcs .
Players from half back drift forward and vice versa with the forward heading back.

So this bollocks about player x is playing shit because he is a midfielder and he is playing wing or half back . Player x is playing crap because he is not putting in the effort.

Forwards push up the ground they take their opponents with them.

Most of the game is played in the midfield

Teague doesn’t have the mental strength or experience to break the mental fragility do this playing Group and no matter who put around him as coaches , he doesn’t have the experience or time

My brother made a good point , they set Teague up to fail , when they appointed him , he didn’t appoint any coaches and stuck with the same team and the club can’t use Covid as a excuse when you see the swans appoint don pyke and demons appoint mark Williams

One key appoint I would make at the club when the season finishes who ever is the senior coach to help him , would be brett Kirk !! We need someone with awe at the club , and Kirk fits that criteria
