Regardless of what happens with McGovern or the rucks, there’s no chance Young is left out with Dixon, Marshall & Finlayson to defend.

Not sure. We are playing a more mobile backline and it's working. Weitering McGovern Kemp matched up on Jackson Tracey Amiss on the weekend and did well

Was just about to post the same thing, for whatever reason things didn’t work with young, Weitering and McGivern all in the backline, we are much more agile now which is one of the big changes since early in the year.

I don’t think we’ll see Young in the backline unless we need a replacement for Weitering, and even then it’s a tossup between Young and S Durdin. Marchbank is the logical replacement for McGovern if he doesn’t come up, we need someone agile and attacking.

We have stopped relying on the individual to win 1:1 in the backline and are now relying on the team to do team things.

Pitto injured and TdK being injured and/or out of form, which necessitated Youngs' move to the ruck, has actually made our backline far better. A fortunate accident - no way this coaching panel would have tried this otherwise.

Wasn't Young dropped before this anyway and came back to Ruck? My memory is we went smaller several weeks ago

Whatever reason we look so much better and I don't think we will change it

The way we have restricted opposition scores the last few weeks has been very impressive

I am being very realistic... whilst on current form, we can and should beat PORT, lets not forget that we have failed and struggled to beat Top 8 teams all year!

It is very possible that Port will be way too good for us and we end up losing by 5-6 Goals. That does not bother me as I know they are way ahead of us, however all I want to see is Presure, tackling and effort.

Hoping we bring in Dow(if concussion protocol sorted) for Kennedy. Wont happen but think it would be a better move than Hewitt.

Dow listed as 1-2 weeks with concussion so may not come up. If in doubt they will probably err on the side of caution.
Did he actually get facial fractures as reported? Or was it just the concussion

Stuffed if I can figure out how to embed the video, but Tarczon’s hit on McKenna is at 3.30ish.

I’ll tell you this much for nothing, if the bump is dead then watching this will make you want to torch the bones & salt the ashes.
Poor old Bluey must have hated playing us

IN: Hewett, TDK
OUT: Kennedy (inj), McGovern (inj)

Interesting questions re: sub. There's actually about six who could be an option.

I'd keep Young as both back-up ruck and another tall defensive option.

Cincotta - Weitering - Saad
Docherty - Kemp - Boyd
Walsh - Cripps - Acres
Martin - C.Curnow - Cunningham
Owies - McKay - Fogarty
TDK - Cerra - Hewett

Newman - Silvagni - Young - Cottrell

sub: Carroll / Marchbank / Motlop / Hollands / Cowan / O'Brien / Plowman

That scenario again ,we all get our hopes high ,massive carlton crowd,we have won some games but can we take the next step against a very good side ,going by our history the answer is No,but hopefully this time we can do it if we play 4Q of pressure footy we cant allow port to to get us on the outside (our weakness)

Tough assignment but we're ready for one. We need to be tested and we will. We play Marvel well but so do Port.
They've won 9 straight there and haven't lost at the venue since 2019.
The crowd will be in our favour but the opponents have plenty of confidence at the venue as well. Bring it on.

Best Positive for this Game is that We play West Coast the following Week, so even if we lose, we will still be in the hunt for the 8th

spot on dodo, as long as we dont shit the bed, i'll be very happy. reckon its gonna be a port / scum grand final - these two are miles in front of the opposition, if we just match them, we could get a lot of confidence. but if we win, blow the lid off

Sorry but there is no way the scum are making the grand final. They may not even make finals

That's Earl Spalding ironing out McKenna in that video and it was 1995 at Subiaco. Game is a lot better for having got rid of this though

This is the one you're thinking of

Young should not play back under any circumstance.

Our back line has performed superbly without him.

Weitering is back to his absolute best.

Why play with what has improved since he left?

huh? Young was dropped for the game against Gold Coast where TDK & Pitto played. So they definitely selected a backline without Young.

Young played against Essendon*, where Pitto was out and TDK played, Young had 4 Hit Outs so spent at least some time rucking.

correct, Young dropped for Suns game. only back in on account of TDK & Pitto injured.

100%, there's been a change in game style and with it attitudes and confidence to do the team thing.

more agile players and ball users across the entire pitch has meant we can be more confident in our tackling (which has gone from weak and infrequent to constant and strong, a few younger players dropped probably accounts for some of that) and running off an opponent to get to the next contest.

when we do neutralise our opponent's forward movement, it's like we have ten more pairs of hands ready for a tap on or a handball receive than we did six weeks ago. It's like its a different team, I think someone called it British bulldog like in the Freo thread. It is, not that it's a comparison I'd choose for a finals team but infinitely better than wishy-washy, half arses we looked like most of this season (including the early wins which weren't overly convincing and not against top sides).

just a much better balance at team selection. more pace and quickness, and much better ball users.

we've been too tall & lumbering forever. at the back, in the middle and up front.

mids: one of hewitt, ed or Kennedy

gov, weiters and kemp with 3 genuine HB flankers - for whatever reason, Young seems to mess up the structure at the back, weiters forever cheating towards young looking to take care of zone space, as well as young's direct opponent. kemp and gov seem to be trusted more by wieters which means weiters can play his dominant intercept game as well as shutting down their best tall.

i think fogerty has added a lot up front - motlop & espesh durdin haven't been up to it at any point this season; not with forward defensive pressure, crumbing, or beating their direct opponent. fog has been running both ways, applying front half pressure and when he gets the ball, his first instinct is to set someone up, rather than blaze away fruitlessly and miss like motlop or durdin.

all these things are adding up to us doing the team thing and playing for each other.

you just love to see it. and in this form you can see why we had hopes of top 4

Also, Cerra. what a star this guy is becoming. in a midfield full of stars and high picks, he's been the best.

Also we are getting rid of the ball really fast. A number of times in the past few weeks I was sure we were about to be caught by an (unseen) opposition player but then our guy handballs or kicks.

Bought my ticket on level two today, nice position on a half forward flank. Tests like this against Port at the pointy end of the season is why you are a supporter. Our season is alive and isn't it great. I think it will be close but I'm confident we will succeed
