Lets win the midfield battle. Kennedy will be a huge loss.

I agree with most of your assessment. I see Kemp becoming a top line player. I still believe he can play further up the ground. I saw him play mid as a junior and he was elite before he did his knee. This is the first time he has been fully fit and getting consistent games since being recruited

As for Young I have my doubts. Lacks agility and is slow with ball in hand. I think he is a handy back up as he can play several roles but has too many flaws to be a consistent best 22 player. I believe he disrupted the flow and teamwork of our backline. Not the reason we have improved but it has defintely helped. Our backline is working so well as a group now. I sadi it early this year but during the pre season Durdin was miles ahead of him. Just a pity he gets injured

I think this is the reason we are looking at Himmelberg McKay Barras etc as options

I agree with your point of view.

I just dont like writing off players, especially young ones on our list given our plight. We havn't proven anything. We have a team with heaps of players not having played 50 games, so I wouldnt go spruiking anyone, nor writing off anyone, because most are unproven.

I have dreams Kemp takes the midfield reigns doen the track. It wont be the first time a backman has taken key midfield role: Ratten, Hogg, Carrazzo.... Kemp is still so young, with so many flaws in his game that get highlighted big time in the backline. As for Young, he has flaws, like stifling our run out of the backline, something he cant depend on someone being there to give it off.

I'm not comparing Young with Kemp. They are different.
Lets not get blinded by the love opf change.
I love Kemp too, but I'm not going to think he's the messiah, just because we are comparing him with young.
He does make a lot of mistakes, miskicks a few times a game, so I don't know how some miss that, but given he's only played 8 games, he's bound to improve. Miskicks get amplified in the backline. He has to cut that out of his game.

I'm just saying that Young and SOS are GREAT depth players, and I wish we had another KPD, and a taller 3rd tall, and Kemp played HB, not 3rd tall, or even better, midfield. If it happens that Voss picks JSOS or Young, its not the end of the world. The backline has not been our weakness.

I like the point about Young getting in Weiters way, and vice versa, and that happened a lot early with Jones and Weiters, then they sorted it out. Gosh I miss the agile, 200cm Jones....but dont miss his brain fades and kicks to the opposition: did I mention kicks to the opposition? They hurt.

I knoiw what you mean SB.

Its scary to think the players maybe feeling like us supporters...over confident.
I think there's anew mindset amongst the boys. Its been brewing for a while.
It didnt happen overnight, but I'd like to say, it did happen.

Hopefully TDK is right and Young can play back. Otherwise, it might be Sam Durdin or Marchbank.

sos or young can't play the gov role, bcos neither have that rebounding penetrating kick that gov has which starts our transition.

i think kemp moves up to the gov role - roaming intercept with the kick penetration to switch flanks or hit the corridor when the other team doze off - and takes their 3rd option marking forward. Marchbank in for gov, to play the kemp role (on their 2nd tall).

imo young isn't a good defender, the others don't trust him - when he's back there our defence is always scrambling to cover his man and the zone space. and then with a hot ball, young just blazes away, no look kicks, handballs and taps it on, all so he doesn't get hit.

I can buy the highlighted bit, I can't argue with that, but can't agree with the rest.

Gov can't do what other defenders can do, and no one has Govs kicking penetration from defense. Gov had 13 kicks last weekend, and one was a 60m goal. I'd guess that's 10 kicks from defence we may miss this weekend, and if say, 6 of them were long penetrating kicks (50m) from defence, then the other 4 kicks would have been short passes. Yeah Govs good, but he is just a part of the whole, and imo can easily be covered. Its the KPD roles which are hardest to cover.

Sam Durdin, Marchbank, Young...I don't mind which one gets the nod. Durdin's timing with marks hasn't been great in VFL, but he's more of a natural footballer than Young. I'd be surprised if Marchbank is ready. He has played a couple OK games in the VFL, and looks like a star footballer with his grace, but is he ready fro Port?

I can see why Kemp's versatility is so appealing, despite a lack of experience. I'm enjoying watching him develop whilst we are winning.

Interesting too whilst didnt think Kempy was that good this week as others did cover 13.7 kms on the weekend in the top 5 indicates at very least this work rate

Cant see durdin marchbank young doing that in 2 games

Kemp has been good along with Weitering Boyd, Saad, Newman, McGovern & Cincotta they have worked well together along with creating run from defence. i wouldn't be changing any of them.

If McGovern misses this week we need to play Marchbank as he is the best like for like option.

Agree. But is does leave us exposed for a lack of size down back. On the narrower Marvel ground this may not be such an issue as it is easier to help one another down back.
But as BV stated, if we win the midfield battle it will matter even less.
But I would expect Port to play a high pressing game around the ball and try to get our key backs and their forwards 1on1 in their F50.
Their midfielders wont be as easy to brush aside as in the past 3 rounds.

Durdin is at much the same stage of recovery as Marchbank, they were both rested in the last quarter in the VFL on the weekend.

Hopefully Lycett doesn’t come up. Their blokes will take advantage of hitouts to advantage. We’ll be working hard just to lay a glove on them, never mind trying to shark hitouts.

I never like making changes to skirt around the things we’re doing wrong… but, I wonder if Binns is a chance, just to give us a bit more running power to at least hold territory after the inevitable forced turnovers?

That same crutch is argument for Young at CHB. The style we’re playing is vulnerable to chains off turnovers. There WILL be one-on-one contests for their talls.

Marshall’s strength is his mobility and arms outstretched on a lead. Dixon is a wrestler. Finlayson is a bit of both. The latter pair are the ones that catch you out. Weiters can’t be in two places at once.

 True

That's a nice fact to know.
I havent looked at running distances.

The good thing from a list perspective is they all offer something different.
I'd like them all fit, ready to play well in AFL or VFL and take a horses for courses approach when needed.

Hopefully one day soon (in 2024) we are clearly in Top 4, we can start rotating before finals.
They all can play a role, but this week the big question is will Gov get up for this game.

We've ben playing a short backline since Kemp took Young's spot.

Gov is 190, Marchbank 193, Kemp 193.....none really tall, if anything Gov makes us short.

Finlayson 197 93 kg..........
Marshall 198 94 kg.........

SPP 187 but a 100 kg bull... Newman 80kg, Cincotta 86kg

Dixon 200 110 kg.............belongs to Weitering

I'm with you in this game Cru.

Port will try and isolate Kemp and Gov with their opponent. I'd like to see Young take Marshall.

We’ll be exposed down back given their height if we don’t bring our 22 player pressure rating. If pressure is up their forwards aren’t getting one on one ball.

:?
We've been the hardest team to score against off turnover in the AFL the last 6 weeks. The style we're playing is doing the opposite.
