Horseshit. It's common knowledge that SOS was grossly underpaid during his time at Carlton in comparison to others.

Wild horses couldn't have dragged SOS from royal parade.

We had to pay SOS in brown paper bags to keep him. You think Hamill didn't know about the extra $$$ his teamates were getting under the table at the time.

What had Hamill done to deserve anything special????

Thats what happens when you start bending over for players.. they slam it right up your backside...

Carlton players always have been looked after.. always will.. there is no reason to go overboard.

Some of the players took their eye off the ball... and started worrying about money and not football.

SOS was NOT one of those...

Campo and Hamill, it should be a monty.

Yes, players who have left the Blues under dodgy circumstances do deserve to be treated differently by the supporters. Thankfully we have not had too many of them.

Any chance of whacking Brendan Goddard and Fat Lance in the title as well? We could surpass Warren...

Don't you mean Brendan "Fat dud" Goddard, do you?

Didn't say Hamill deserved anything, just said I understand why he left. If Carlton were outbid $200k for SOS he would have left too but we could never let that happen.

SOS' book is interesting. There's a very intriguing passage in there about how Jack told him he would be traded to Richmond for Matthew Richardson because he was being difficult in his contract negotiation.

I forget the finer details, but seem to remember Silvagni saying he contemplated leaving at the time.

I don't have the book, but anyone who does could clarify.

The potential move was also picked up by one of the TV channels at the time, and it made me feel sick in the stomach. But I remember being told later on that it was driven by the Club and not by SOS himself.

Speaking generally, it pisses me off when required players leave, but can you imagine being fans of other clubs with a worse record in this regard. The Blues have a great history of keeping such players and really it's only been our trainwreck over the past few years that have brought this out. This to me suggests that the Club has a lot to do with it, not just the players. We as fans will never know the real stories, and even published accounts could be slanted for book sales etc. Also, if the cash differential is significant as per Sheik's comments you'd be mad not to accept.

Besides, we have to look forward now don't we? Further, your anger at players leaving will only egg on the Saints and Bombers fans of this world, and that can hardly be a good thing.

You've won me over verbs. And it's not just your fine Catholic education that got me there (but it could have been the drinking water).

Who could forget the kid and the 20 Cents from his Piggy Bank.

Probably not the real reason that Chris Grant decided to stay - but even he cited it as one of the reasons why he stayed.

I know lots of Carlton youngsters (including my own) who sent money to Aaron Hamill via the club (I am talking real money) and it was never acknowledged or EVER returned.

My dislike of Aaaron, and I've said it time and again here, stems form what he did to the treasured No 4.

He requested this jumper, worn by not only one of my all time favourite players, but by a true legend who epitimised loyalty.

Cripes, we couldn't get Sticks until he was 21 because he wanted to help his beloved Glenelg to win a flag (prompting Collo to suggest we send over 6 players to get the job done).

He then turned down the offer of "half of Adelaide" to go home and stayed on with the Blues.

And within 12 months, Aaron showed his true colors and saw the lure of $$$ (and maybe Mrs Warne?).

Hey, he wants to go for cash, then fine. But cop the criticsm on the chin. His constant and childish 'blaming' Elliott demeans him further.

I actually know a person who sat on the board meeting on that issue.
The club wanted SOS out!!!..they wanted Richo and the pick...and SOS wasnt paid anything to scale to what he was worth.. and compared to others...(never was).. it was a deliberate ploy to get him to leave for what was perceived as for the betterment of this footy club.
That actually says alot about the two way loyalty thinggy.. when you would contemplated trading your heart and soul ....

But when you are talking about Campo or Hamill.. that whole situation can not be compared.
Hamill was grossly overpaid and he woul;d have been overpaid if he stayed.
Campo made a whole career of being overpaid and is a cheat.. a softcock and no great loss.

It's the same thing for me, in that I don't get to stressed over players leaving (for what ever reason), as the boot could just as easily be on the other foot at any time (if the SOS story is anything to go by).

It doesn't happen very often, and like Molsey said, it has happened a lot more elsewhere than it has at Carlton.

Definitely the drinking water Molsey.

I wonder when AFL will get like English football and the NBA...player transfers are just part of the deal of supporting a club...

Wayne Rooney goes to ManU and its no big deal...more expected if anything and I am sure he would be welcome back at Everton if they could ever afford him..

Shaq spits it and goes to the Heat...no big deal really.....in the NBA players change clubs on mass...
Vince Carter didnt get on with the Raptors hierachy so he wanted out and they wanted him out....and Vince is a franchise player..someone like Campo would been dispatched the first time he fell out with management..no discussion...pick a team..see ya later.
Its a question of do you support the club or follow the players....it is pro sport and while we luv the AFL for being so organic and home grown as the big bucks keep increasoing with TV rights etc I reckon the landscape will change and high profile player transfers will become more common and accepted and fans will be less precious about players and see them as hired guns rather than home grown fixtures for life...

The question is were we always like English Football and American Basketball.

Players have been moving clubs in the AFL/VFL from 1897, our first coach Jack Worrall poached a few players from other clubs (in a supposed amateur era), our Captain/Coach of the 1938 Premiership Team Brighton Diggins came from South Melbourne. Ron Barassi our 68/70 Premiership Coach came from Melbourne.

We seem to take a rose coloured view of players moving between clubs as a recent phenomenon, it is not and never has been.

Not sure I'm with you on this. Have you seen the reception he gets at Goodison Park when ManU head there?

Ditto Lampard at West Ham and Sol Campbell at White Hart Lane.

Rio at Leeds. I think the States are on their own as far as accepting player transfers with little fuss.

I think Red Sox fans are still bitter about Babe Ruth.
