I have just been reading the Mark Buckley thread and it has got me thinking about something I have been contemplating over the past few months, being non footy season and all. Maybe this is one for Jarusa or any stats person, or maybe qualitative, or both.

Historically, what is the most significant number at Carlton? Living here in Adelaide (but growing up a Melbourne boy) Port are trying to make number 1 the most significant insofar as each captain now takes it over. ie Tredrea will wear it this year and so on.

So what is ours. Do we base it on games?, games and goals? games and brownlow votes, games and B and F votes, Or do we also add some qualitative measures such as the spectacular? For mine 25 has been the one held dear simply because of Jezza. He is simply the best footballer I have seen.....and even better than Ablett and Matthews. He has the games, the goals, the spectacular. The jury is out on the current 25 and time will tell which may impact the number 25 in this explorative exercise. But then how can we go past our number 1 two Silvagnis with oodles of games and accolades to boot.....or what about the number 2?

So what do you think?

I am interested to see if we can come up with some sort of formulation /calculation which provides us with the most significant number at Carlton from an historical, and contemporary perspective....can it be done?

From work done by Stephen Williamson, the number that has been worn in more senior games than any other for Carlton is 21.

In terms of Premierships though number 7 is best, being worn in 12 of Carlton's 13 premierships where players have worn numbers.

That is just a couple of criteria though, would love to hear about some of the more qualitative measures of the greatness of different guernsey numbers.

Marks of the year, nominations for marks of the year, goals of the year....but i guess then that is still stats. See the Buzz simply added something to number 4 to me. Charisma, showmanship, bravado, excitement. For someone who did play a lot of games (ie huge number) for Carlton he certainly impacted significantly and will never be forgotten. Big Nick is another who added qualitative measures in his own right presence etc.

Any thoughts from others?

Geez it would have to come down to the toss of a coin between 2 & 4 wouldn't it?

Or shall we just compromise and go for 3?

Seriously though - I think that Jezza's "25" is the number that has all the memories, romance and history about it. "Jesaulenko you beauty". Its just unfortunate that we tend to issue these numbers to any, Frank, Ian and Brendan.

The other important point about it is that it will probably be the last number ever worn by the Captain-Coach of a Premiership VFL/AFL side.

Big Nick(Capt Coach Flags), -The Diesel (brownlow and Norm) and add in the tragedy of Peter Motley and it's a no brainer.

Not to mention The brilliant Stephen Da Rui maybe the class and grit of Domenic Fotia? The Tatts of Wow Jones? What about Corey? Daniel Hartford?

What have they done to opur precious number 2?????

I've got a real soft spot for the #4 (as you can probably guess from my name), but with Horrie Clover, Ken Hands, and two Silvagnis, it's pretty hard to go past #1

I suppose that is my point particulalrly where the number 2 comes into it. We really have botched that up where historical relevance is concerned. I realise that we do not know exactly the outcome of a player at age 18. However, giving McKernan, Harford etc such a great number is a travesty.

We need to place some sort of significance on certain numbers. Cherish them, revere them and possibly make some sort of statement regarding their importance. For mine it is still 25 as AGRO pointed out....but 1 and 2 would have to be close seconds.

It's the number 4 for me. First Buzz, then Sticks made this number 'something special'.
