Just watching Round 3 2001 v Essendon* and Mr Vance is playing his one and only game for the season, which was incidentally his last game for the Blues.

Looking at his career stats, he played five games for Carlton, four of them (back-to-back-to-back-to-back) in 1999, none in 2000 and just the one in 2001.

I remember him doing quite well in that pre-season game Fev kicked 12. May have got close to 30 touches.

Where was he in 2000?

What happened to the kid?

I can vaguely recall a knee injury.

I was curious about an injury in his fourth game...he only had one touch for the entire game, but then the pre-season game was on Dec 31 1999, many months after that fourth game...maybe I'm imagining that he played the pre-season game...I used to have it on video but cannot find it.

Edit: So the knee was his demise. What about the 2000 season though?

From reading some other stuff, it seems he may have been in the Karl Norman mode of 'Country Party Boy'.

However in this case instead of Carlton spending a pick in the 70's on him it was pick no 6.

He suffered a broken jaw in a 2000 pre-season game according to the Shepp News archives.


Another snippet from the April 19, 2001 Shepp News after he played a game in the seniors.

The match against the Bombers was only his fifth for the club after being dogged by injury last year.

Vance missed two months with a broken jaw after a collision with Fremantle forward Clive Waterhouse in the second round of the Ansett Cup last year.

He was hit by a series of injuries after his return to the field.

"I strained my groin, hammie and then broke my thumb," he said.

"I ended up playing 12 or 13 games last year."

The former Murray Bushrangers premiership defender said it was certainly his best game for the club.

"It was a pretty intense game and every shephard, spoil and tap-on got noticed.

"There was no pressure on the blokes who came in and Brits was pretty excited about the game because we had nothing to lose."

Vance made a crucial error in the last quarter which he thought had cost his team the match.

"I thought I had let the team down, but we kicked two quick goals and the mistake was forgotten.

"Everyone just lifted after those goals."

So what was the feeling like in the rooms after the match?

"Unbelievable," he said.

Unfortunately for Vance he is likely to be squeezed out when Bradley, Silvagni and Koutoufides return.

Waterhouse's shoulder went one way and VAnce's career the other.

Although injured for only a few weeks...Vance lost it at this very instant!

Until that time you thought gee this was one tough kid...and he was!
My guess is he grew up never worried about being collected, always knowing he would come out better off.
I'm sure he was shaving at 12 whilst most kids were wondering if they would see bumfluff on their chin.

That Waterhouse knock was the first time he'ld been hurt (!!) and I reckon he was never the same after that....never seemed to be in the action demanding the ball (and getting his own ) like previously. Add the injuries (which it can be argued are linked...think you'll get injured and you probably will!)
....and couldn't get by on the occasional glimpses of skill

That's a pretty sad story, but probably not uncommon.

Agree.

He killed Clive that night and I still feel he would have gone on with his career if not for that cheap shot from Clive.

My old heard the crack when Balme broke Southby's jaw after Vinny had thrown a few! :evil: Neil broke his jaw in two places.

Neil couldn't even hit the right bloke! 8)

Cheapest shot ever against a Carlton player was Mal Brown playing in the SA Premiers Vs. Vic Premiers game when he hit one of the Carlton rovers who was just walking up to him. Was it Trevor Keogh who got hit?

I felt sorry for Muzza after reading these posts. Here i was thinking he was a hack but now I realise he suffered from injury, and at the hands of Waterhouse no less. I wonder if he washes it twice a day to get the smell of that smeg-head off himself.

Owing to my pity I have updated his Blueseum reference to highlight the personal side of Muzza. thanks Wojee for the data.
