I feel like we have had a couple of pre-season-like games to get our system in order but under very little pressure (just like pre-season).
Thankfully, we have done that. Just like we did against GWS pre-season, absent pressure.
Now we get a bit of a do-over for the proper season under pressure (in the case of Geelong, intense pressure).
But for the first time in a while, I could clearly see Voss’s desired game plan:
1) Make it hard for opposition to score (through contest and pressure)
2) Move the ball quickly into the forward line
3) Keep the ball in the forward line to create multiple scoring opportunities.
But to make this work, everyone has to work really hard and those kicking into the forward line need to lower their eyes and pick the right option.
Hopefully, with a couple of easy kills, we are able to maintain this game plan under the pressure coming our way!
That's "our way" given the list we have. Without Smith coming on this season in the midfield rotations, we continue the same plan as our last 3 years.
Given the list we have, I am an unabashed fan of this game plan. We have no other choice.
Its our small forwards who have not been good for us. In the last 2 games against weak opposition our small forwards (except Durdin and Williams) have been missing in the first halves when the game is at its hottest. That warns me some of the small forwards are flat track bullies. I must say I did enjoy the frenzied tackling regardless of the tiring opponent, or, an opponent who gave up the fight, but I am suss on a few of our smalls.
