Clubs should only be eligible for selecting a free agent if they have not played finals in more than 3 of the last 5 years, and or not won a premiership in the last five years, or they may take a free agent if they choose to exempt themselves from rounds 1 and 2 of the national draft. The selection of a free agent in that year should exempt Academy and F/S selection matching.
I agree with Bookie.
This period of "equalisation" the worst aspect to swallow from a fans perspective has to be the pillaging of clubs at the end of each season by Geelong, Sydney and a couple of others. There is no pain for them getting good talent.
eg Geelong got that model dude with his long hair...Bailey Smith..basically for pick 17 to the Bulldogs.
What a joke. Isn't Smith a contender for the Brownlow this year?
Where was the pain for Geelong to get this player?
In future, as Bookie says, Geelong should only get a free agent if they exempt themselves from round 1 and 2 of the national draft. That sounds far more "equitable" than the current system.
At least when Brisbane recruited their A Grade talent from other clubs they did it when they weren't that strong a club..eg Lachie Neale & Daniher. The one they got from the Bulldogs (Dunkley) doesn't equate as well, but in general most of their top notch trading was done before they made their climb.
