why is this club obsessed with a small forward ,give me quick strong mid anytime we have to remember our weakness is SLOW ball movement so recruiting a gun small fwd how does that help .
Our weakness is slow people, not slow ball movement. We can hoik the pill up the line all the live long day.
Someone like Dovaston can wrong foot defenders & draw them off the line. He can be uncatchable if he gets out the back. Slippery as all @#$%&! & finish on either side of the body.
He might be the best small forward to come through the draft this decade.
100%
He looks great and could add some real damage in the F50 with Ainsworth and Hayward next year.
I still think I prefer the mids, but there’s a fair chance that’s an irrational decision.
We’ve been burnt by so many of these halflings in the past… BUT, his resume stacks up against ANY of them that have come through the draft in recent times.
I don’t think I can say the same about any of the mids, but what they lack in star quality, they more than make up in versatility. Good midfielder, can play forward. Never misses. Good midfielder, very useful off half back. Proper professional footballers.
Best t-shirt I ever bought cost me $8 at Target. I went back & bought three more in slightly different colours. Dovaston’s ceiling is equivalent to one of those high-end fashion jobs that you need to refinance your house to own. You’ll hardly ever wear it lest the print fades & you’ll spend plenty of time questioning your choices… but you’ll always have the memory of getting blown in the alley behind Chasers by that superficial bird who liked your t-shirt.
Well that was a graphic description.
But as for your comment, not irrational at all, I get where you are coming from, I'd prefer a mid that can go forward and kick goals to a forward that can go in the midfield also.
That is something we have lacked for a while now.
But geez, he knows how to find the goals, how that translates into AFL with the bigger bodies, who knows.
He'd be an excitement machine every time he goes near the ball and we haven't had that since Betts is all I'm thinking.
It could also allow Ainsworth and Hayward to be more up the ground or on the outside of an F50 contest with him feeding them the ball or banging them through himself.
A lot to like about him IMO.
Let’s assume, with a bit of luck, Dean isn’t called prior our pick and we have the opportunity to use pick 9. Would you take Dovatson? If so, you have explained what Dovatson can do for us, if he is selected ahead of Williams and Evans, or when Williams retires. If not, who would you think would be available and select at pick 9.
If we match Dean at say pick 7 or 8, I would be delighted to select Dovatson around pick 16, then match for ISON for reasons you posted.
I wouldn’t care if we go into deficit next year. We will still have enough assets to match for Walker, and with our later picks and upgrade rookies to make up our 3 picks, if the leftovers in the 2027 aren’t worth carrying.
I doubt we will trade in Butters next year. Feel Doggies are front runners IF Port want to do a deal. Our 2 first rounders will be off the table for Walker, and our 2 2027 F1s aren’t worth much in the compromised draft.
So, for me, the debate whether to take a mid over a small forward for 2026, depends if we have enough quality mids for 2026 with Cripps Hewett Walsh Cerra Lord Smith Ainsworth Williams Hollands Ben Fog, and in 2027 with the addition of Walker, and possible retirement of Williams and Fogarty.
I think we have cover for mids and with Dovatson Ainsworth and Evans (if he continues his form) give us enough small forwards.
Then, the only glaring holes I hope we fill this year with a bonafide KPD lined up in SSP, and a KPF next year.
