We had to hide Lance away on the 3rd best forward. Good when able to zone off but when it was one on one he was too slow and immobile

Agree about the kicking up forward - Geelong were creative, used run and short kicks - we kicked long to the contest where Mooney or Scarlett zoned off. Maybe we don't have the run/creativity or the coach asked them to do that. There were reports from training that we would be reducing the long bomb but if that game was any indication it doesn't look like we've changed the forward movement of the ball at all

When we switched the play in the back half we looked better, were able to run with the ball

Waite, AB and Carrazzo seemed quiet, while Fisher, Lappin, Stevens and O'hAilpin were good.

Murph was ok for his first match - read the ball well around the packs.

Thought Walker showed a lot of dash at time but decision making let him down - it didn't seem to be his actual kicking technique that let him down.......although at times Geelong had 2 men loose down back because we had flooded back.

Kicking for goal was woeful......you have to wonder how many of them stay back at training to practice one of the most important aspects of the game

Thornton was very poor given he wasn't matched up on a Gorilla - Kingsley is someone with a similar height and may even be lighter than T-Bird.

Forgot to add; Fev looked good given his limited pre-season......led well and chased

Anyone?

Importantly, did he confirm if the Family Day was off?

He did confirm it's off (said the whole ground is flooded) thats all I heard, though.

Crumbs. Thanks for that Ryan.

Was entertaining but my biggest fear has materialised.
If Kingsley can kick 9 goals in any i mean any game against any side, that side has a few problems down back( be it NAB game)

Where do we find a Full Back ( CHB really ) ?? How soon do we get him or how long will it take before one develops from our list. No disrespect to Thornton and Lance but we are still one Key Big Man away from consistent 4 qtr football, let alone more wins than losses.( ang Livo is still not the solution he is a squad player not an instant pick )

Now i know a few might say its all about delivery into the forward line but still 9 goals is 9 goals and no matter how good or bad delivery is, a quality Defender can read the play from upfield to better place themselves when under seige.

Lance on tonights performance IMO still thinks like a forward for the backline, hence at times leaving others vulnerable. Now that isn't a bad thing... but it is in a side where we make costly errors upfield and the ball gets turned over quickly.

In summary i think we did alright tonight, and that maybe Pagan does have a plan. Now all i think we need to get this plan happening and working effectively is a Key backman.

I'm starting the recruiting rubbish early .... Get us a Backman , who is out of contract next year and how do we get them ?? Would Polak suit ??

But all in all i wasn't too upset by tonights performance.

What say you ??

Bah.. the only reason the game wasn't a complete embarrassment was because Geelong were pretty rusty and had a poor game. None of our older kids stood up, none of them. Whitnall was shown once again to be far too slow for the modern game, Thornton seems to have gone backwards at a rapid rate of knots, Deluca can't mark, McLaren didn't do anything, Walker again disappointed and there didn't seem to be any kind of flow to our possession.

Yeah it's only a preseason match but I've seen it all before and I'm venting

On the positive side O'hAilpin seemed dangerous in the forward line, Murphy showed a fair bit and I was impressed with Blackwell once again when ever he got his hands on the ball.

Setanta was really good; he should be played in the firsts for the entire season - even if he only kicks one goal a game the amount of attention that he demands from the opp defence will cause opportunities for others. I'm really getting sick of our game plan tho, I'm sick of seeing opposition players in groups of 4 stroll between defensive and attacking fifty, if geelong's skills were better tonight they would have won by 80 points - just too many patches of no defensive pressure in the midfield.

well done to Marc Murphy, didn't appear to get much game time(?) but when he was out there he was in everything - was overhitting his kicks a bit but i was otherwise really impressed.

Lappin plays his best footy down back so hopefully Denis plays him there this year.
Murphy did a few nice things. He seems to time his runs well and looks like a natural midfielder. Made a few poor decisions but I'm a nice person so I'll give him a bit longer in the system before calling for his head and saying we should've picked Thomas...
Setanta looked ok but really he should be beating players like Paul Chapman in marking contests and his goal kicking needs a lot of work. But for someone who has only played football for two years he looks very impressive.
McLaren did well at tapping the ball to our advantage but if King was playing could've been a different story.
I know it's only the NAB Cup and it doesn't really mean much but until we find a key defender or two I think we'll struggle. :(

Please don't go there just yet, I'll have one of my fits brought on by the thought of trading away high draft picks - the horror!!

fairly sure the decision to recruit bower, edwards, saddo, kennedy and to a lesser extent dmac - was an attempt at addressing our backline talls problem. Now let's play the waiting game

Just trying to get in early,As it will start soon enough. The fact i hate this type of discussion so early prompted me to make the statement. Steal some thunder so to speak.
But all things said and done we do lack a key backman and that to me was so so obvious.

Correct you are ... I'm prepared to play the game. Forgot about Saddington, he might help the structure...And the young boys, you're right i know you are but its always nice to read others thoughts.

Opposing forwards are gonna feast on us this year. T-Bird looked smaller and weaker than i can remember and was manhandled by KK who is a battler. T-bird isnt a goal square player and needs to be kept at CHB. Livo anyone?

We had so much ball but we were horribly ineffective going into F50. The cats were rusty but more clinical going forward.

Its good however to see the youngsters slowly getting games into them. And that should be the aim..... giving Wiggo, Sporn, Teague isnt gonna bring on our youngsters..... and were not gonna be any good until Simmo, Murph, Eddie, AB, Carlos, Hartlett, JK, JR, Fish, Waitey and co get 80-100 games under their belt.

We would have won if they still had the 3 points for hit the post rule - Next 4 weeks need goal kicking practice. Fev looked rushed and uncomfortable with the countdown.

Pagan's already playing games by resting the wondrous Wiggins.

I'm not a fan of livingston, but I concede that Kent Kingsley is his dream match up. Was there any injury that kept him out of the tonight? if not then the writing is surely on the wall

Optus is a water polo venue tonight.

Good.. -Stevens Lappin Fisher
Encouraging- Bentick, Murphy Setanta Simpson Betts McGrath (i may have missed someone else)

Why is Walker spending his time chasing Ablett?
dont we have a dud to do that kind of shit role???

Were miles away....

Lance just showed why he isnt AFL material...i think we should play him on the Ron Barassi statue .,.

A very very good question. I tend to agree why is Walker playing this type of roll, if its about development surely he could develop someone else ?

Yep...Agree there...

We see what stupid errors the players make on the footy field, but at times the MC have a lot to answer for...
