I have a confession to make. I think I am responsible for that drastic & mysterious downturn in our form. I think I caused a ripple in the footy universe that night.

At that game I did something that I never have done, or never do, at the football. And no it wasn't meeting up with Syd. Far worse.

You see, at that GWS game in 2024....

*clears throat*

I had a shit.

I repeat, I never do that at the football, or indeed away from home at all really. And this one off event was courtesy of a hot dog I'd bought at the ground prematch, which caused a bit of an issue later on. A respectable bathroom was found, & yep, I did the unthinkable.

We have been awful ever since.

I feel terrible.

I figure maybe the only way to lift the curse is at our next GWS game, I go again.

Thanks CK. All this time I thought it was my declaration on TC late in Q1 that we would break 200 points, that caused the breakdown. I will sleep easy tonight.

Voss made the comment in his interview that 'a few sliding doors moments didn't go our way'. I wonder what he was specifically referring to - maybe our bad luck with injuries in the 2nd half of 2024?

At a guess I would assume he meant this season and the missed shots on goal.
i.e. Kemps 5 misses on the weekend.

his fate was sealed last season. he was never getting out of this one.

I don't disagree.
He was set up for failure unfortunately.

Set up for failure? I heard a snippet from Whately peddling that.
Voss is a big boy. He knew exactly what he was getting himself into.

As a hypothetical, what if the club was looking to move Voss on at the end of last year but he asked for an opportunity to do it "his way". Perhaps he thought he was constrained by Hansen controlling the strategies from the box.
So the club re-jigs the coaching group, Hansen is no longer senior assistant, new assistants and football manager are introduced, Voss controls the lines, collates the information and makes the strategic decisions. Wright agrees to honour the contract but Voss is under no illusion that if he wants responsibility, he takes full responsibility.
Would that be setting him up for failure or giving him the opportunity to prove himself?

Just a hypothetical of course but Voss has nothing to complain about. He had his chance, he knew the parameters and he agreed to proceed.
He could have chosen to walk away last year if he wanted to.

I agree, I'm sure that was exactly the case at the end of last year, I think he may even referenced that in his interview.
But can't it be both?
I agree Voss took this year on and also took on the responsibility and pressure of massive changes and coaching for his career at the same time.
Ultimately he fell on his own sword in the end.
But to turn the club around in 9 games with all the changes on and off the field, that would have been a massive feat IMO, especially with the added pressure in 'having' to win each week as a matter of coaching survival, hence the reference to quick sand.
We won't be putting the same pressure on Fraser for the last 14 games.

I think the question is......................was Wright so wrong sticking with Voss?

Leading 7 out of 8 games at 1/2 time and then coming back from 45+ points down against the reigning Premiers on their home deck, to just get rolled late, would suggest to me that Voss was just a few players short and some quality leaders short of success.

The data says Carlton were rubbish after half time. The data also says they were uber competitive for 2 quarters.

The AFL is full of iffs, buts and maybes, with a heavy dose of shoulda, coulda. Voss wasn't far off the mark, but he is now just another Carlton failure.

Bring in the next punching bag to get tarred and feathered by the fans and the media. :hitcomputer: :hitcomputer: :hitcomputer:

Best of luck Josh. I hope you get all the support you need. Make your mark and show them you are good enough to earn the job in 2027. If you can't do that then.............................................I got nuthin'.

Exactly.
And still no one has been able to explain the drop offs.
People have their opinions but nothing seems to line up, fitness, game plan, strategy, players, skills, mental fortitude etc.
All we do know is that it wasn't working as it was.
With no pressure to win now, it will be interesting to see how the dice fall and who remains at the club in 2027.
2 out of the door already.

Lets start on that - it was Voss who made the call. When u listen to various media sources, you would think it was the club that "parted ways". That isnt true, regardless, Voss seeking out Davies and or others just prior to the Brisbane game to feel the waters suggests Voss initiated it.

That to is a moot point for a number of reasons, but possibly the biggest flag is our President and literally one of the first things he said at the Press conference, "We wanted to roll Vossy at the end of last year. pause. Then it was something along the lines of not having to apologies for allowing him to continue....

WOW - without even moderately unwrapping that statement further, that is a clear message Voss was being setup to fail.

The mish mash of Wrights semi justification around support - we provided x,y,z then we went to the draft to "refresh" or similar our list...... We all know how that has gone so far......

And now we hit potentially, another groundhog day moment - with the search for yet another ffing coach and still our list is a blithering mess..... Partly good was to also see Austin move on. But realistically, he should have been sacked some time ago and/or numerous other better managers considered to do the job. He was an epic fail.
I took it differently, I thought he meant it as "we wanted to roll with Vossy at the end of last year" or "let Vossy roll on". As in, let him keep coaching.

I know where you're coming from, what he said verbatim sounds like he meant giving Voss the sack, but that's not how it came across.

Or is that just me?

Yeah that's the way I understood it as well.

At times like these people will pick a side an believe what they want.

Yesterday I saw a snippet of the interview Voss did with afl.com.au where he said that he has no plan B, and is fully invested into plan A. People interpreted that as he was describing his game plan, but I was clear to me that he was talking about his life and future plans.

But can we put to bed the Whately "set up to fail" crap.
This clown started every Monday show with a doomsday Carlton montage and asking how long will Voss survive... only to turn around and blame same old Carlton when the decision was made. F...........R..........O

Voss is a smart man. The club was clear in the outcomes they required and both parties chose to roll the dice... it didn't work out.

IIRC, unlike others you meet at the footy, CK didnt get off his arse. I had to go down and greet him and his kids.
He left without saying good bye too....snuck out before the final bell.

I reckon he had an accident and was covering up.

when he took the job we were all expecting to challenge for a flag. brownlow medalist, two coleman winning forwards, an AA calibre Fullback .we had walsh in his prime pre back injury. voss wanted big strong bodies and runners who could run all day. and he got everything he wanted.

he wanted to bludgeon other teams at the coalface for 4qtrs, game in, game out for a 25 game season and finals.

apart from one maigical little run delivered to us by the Gods themselves in 2023 - his gamestyle was flawed and unsustainable. the afl changed the rules midseason, and we were toast.

from there we too stubborn, too stupid to alter our list at the end of 2024 when we should have traded harry for a small forward and picks to modernise our list, and then use the reaminder of harry's cap to trade for houston.

all of this was voss' doing, and when things happened out of our control, the club, voss whoever - were to slow to tweak the list. GW came in, saw the same things, and has gone about revamping us off and on the field. so far, so good.

Yep Braithy. Voss game plan. Let the opposition run the ball out of their backline and we flood back. And then we try and win the ball and run forward in waves - to no one.

No pressure while the opposition take the ball forward annoyed the shit out of me.

Then Voss is on the field without being in the box, and just barkes and waves his arms to go back. Every lead we ever had, he went ultra defensive. You saw that everytime. And just kept on doing it, even though it didnt work.

Far out. I hope Fraser just releases the shackles and just goes one on one for the rest of the season.

While out new coach works out what we do next year.

Do we think he will just run with Voss’s game plan? What do you all think?

Haven't read any other comments but here's my two cents on Michael Voss:

Top bloke, very good coach - anything different to that is an opinion not based on fact but to suit one's warped narrative. But the decision he made was a good one. Hope he stays in the game.

On the CEO, Pres and GM presser:

Better than I expected. They did well. Remember that it wasn't all that long ago that this would have been leaked days out and they would have stuttered their way through an uncomfortable half-truths press conference talking absolute word salad gibberish.

As an aside - if you miss Ratts and want an astute footy brain who understands the modern game, then Hayden Skipworth is your guy. But like Ratts, he's going to need some really supportive and culture driven assistants that he trusts. Without that, like Ratts, it'll end in disaster.

If you want the culture driven assistant to be head coach, yet still understands the modern game, but there's a question mark on whether he can actually implement it, then Jaymie Graham is your guy.

If you want an already tried head coach, then get ready for them to be a bit more hands off than normal, to the point that you're wondering if they're actually the head coach.

Hard no on Skipworth - he's literally the Emporer with no clothes - and the fact McCrae was pumping his tyres today is all you need to know they can't get him out of the door quick enough.

Essendon* can have him.

I'm hoping he runs with the Mansfield game plan from the 90's. One on one footy, and if you're losing then whack the mouthiest cauliflower from the opposition. At least hit the showers with your head held high knowing you won the fights. Then watch your back in the car park after the game.

Firstly I'm not running a pity party for Voss, just stating how I see the situation.
I would've liked to see until at least mid-year if the playing group could get their s#$t together, but now we will never know.
The pressure is off and everything has changed.

Who were the big bodied runners aside from Acres?
In 2022 we got Acres but lost a solid B grader big bodied runners in Newnes and lost Setterfield also.
In 2023 we added no big bodies players instead we added Elijah and Fantasia and lost another solid B grade big bodied runner in Curnow.
In 2024 we only added Haynes and mostly kids but lost a heap of injured experienced players and traded on another B grade big body runner in Kennedy. And before you say we lost out trading him on, we are seriously questioning the set up with Cerra, Cripps and Hewett at the moment and Kennedy was just another slow mid in our rotation that also had kicking issues (but still better than some).
In 2025 is the only year you could say we added big bodied runners to compete with the current game style, but it was too little too late and none were mids.
The fact about our recruiting is we failed to adapt to the changes in the game quick enough but we also had little capital in all those drafts to do so (aside from 2024 to get Jagga).
At the end of 2023 would've you been happy to lose one of our A graders for better B graders or a round 1 pick to compete with the game changes?
Even McKay who both of us said should've been traded in 2024 we would've kept in 2023.
I agree in 2024 we should've added more depth and Voss tried, he attracted Houston to our club.
Houston trade was out of his hands he wanted him we all know this so lumping this in with his doing is not correct.
The rest I agree on.
Everyone has a hand in this, the unfortunate part is we now look like a s$%t show of a club again.
