Went today and it was pretty average. No run through the midfield at all except a couple of two minute burst in various quarters.

Postives :
Bower got a run in the last quarter(he may have been on early but I didn't see him) and did some nice things and made a good contest against at a loose ball in the forward line against a much bigger built opponent - nice courage.

Ryan Jackson had run and contested well, pity his teammates didn't help in two on ones on the wing a few times.

Hartlet continues to show composure under pressure deep in defense.

and last of all:

PLAY LANCE FORWARD :garthp:

Before we get all the "cant take a mark, he is not a centre half forward" comments. Play him on a flank and stick Setanta/Deluca/Bryan at CHF for the pack marks. We look a much more dangerous side with him forward.

T Bird CHB, Hartlett or Livo at FB(depending on opposing forward)

Next week - drop Scotland - doesn't even look interested unless we are moving forward. He should be made to sit in a room watching Bower and Jackson footage and told if you want to play again you need to show endevour and heart like these blokes.

rest - Kouta, Stevens, Lappin, Fev

And play the kids and fringe players(yes we have many) to see if one can actually take a step.

It's not like playing the senior blokes is saving us from embarrasing score lines

Yeah it was disappointing to watch but you've got to be kidding if you thought the boys were putting in a fair dinkum crack today.

Positions constantly shifted, blokes playing roles they shouldn't have been, blokes in the side that shouldn't have been.

Fevola and Waite, probably the two least fit people on the field were never sighted panting. Meanwhile Port's boys were a bit tired halfway through the last.

Looks like the Blues understand the ramifications of the kick-out changes and are conserving as much energy as possible. Solid reminder for us all about how stupid watching pre-season for team assessment can be.

What I saw from individuals who had question marks over them today, whether their efforts were good or bad I was satisfied that what I had got out of the game was what I (and Denis as well I presume) had come to see.

Good post.

It's hard to believe the hysteria that's going on here. Wait until the season proper, and if the beltings start, then get out your razor-blades if you wish.

The umpiring was hilarious

Anyone else in the Pratt stand see what the free against Houla was paid for? Because Houla didn't give the ball to the boundary ump, the boundary ump had a sook to the field umpire and a free was given to Port

Next one........Kouta kicked the ball, ball was touched by the man on the mark.........ump yells out 'touched, play on' then I think Waite or someone else marked it, and the same ump payed the mark

 :garthp:

Players have no confidence..........no talk, no sheperding, no work ethic

Playing Lance as a loose man will not work. It allowed Brogan to play loose and we kicked it long to him a lot of the time. When we tried to finesse the ball, our skills weren't good enough/players didn't have the confidence and it resulted in us overusing the ball

Sick of seeing Walker played down back - actually has speed which would be better used on the wing.

100% correct Red was being run off repeatly Walker should be in the centre and a game plan . not kicking it long to packs. We dont have Carey

How bloody good is Josh Kennedy !!!

Seriously to even consider playing this soon shows great character and mental strength not to mention work ethic !!

AND CARROTS - the most pleasing thing from him today was not the 42 touches but 5 goals !! means he kicked the ball well !!

See there are two positives from today (not that Josh has played yet ) !!

GO BLUES !

What a game

We really fooled port into thinking they are good

The pre-season plan is working Dennis, miss targets, miss tackles, drop marks, pass to the opposition, don't man up, avoid the hardball, miss set shots, it is all coming together nicely.

Anyone dare start a tanking thread should be shot, as we are just crap.

Even if it was a practice match do you think we are going to turn on the magic switch and steamroll the opposition come round 1?

Credits to Scotland, Fisher, Murph, JR, Bower, Walker, Bentick (1st Half), Simmo and Hartlett for good games.

Funny comments by Mitchell at the jumper presentations. He was asked what young guys are up and coming from today's Bullant game to give is hope? Response was Bower + Russell and Carlos who played seniors?

hmmmmm>?

The fixture was the best thing I saw at the game.

But Russell, Walker, Bower, Murphy all showed a bit whilst Scotland should never darken Carlton's door again!

Just like that Carlton idiot who jeered Walker but copped it sweet when Walker took off down the back flank with a great run.

Walker did play well but his disposal is shocking.

Great Result.... a Real Positive.... i am so Delighted.....

No kidding, Today's Result has made me make up my mind in getting a membership....

Our passionate supporters, every single year , get sucked in into the action, way too early and with it, the whole players and coaching stuff get sucked in too...

Denis would have learnt so much from last year NOT to allow the players to take these games seriously....I very doubt that any of our players were concerned with the score nor were they giving a 100% effort...

they dont need to, WE dont need results right now...In fact, i think its usless to count the Score....The players need to have a run, new young players need to have a go, and Senior players just need to keep their Blood pumping and be ready for Rd1...

NO need for heroic actions right now, and no need for concern about wins and losses....

I have two major Expectations of Carlton 2006

1- To win 9 games this year and finish up 9th-12th

2- To Avoid 60+ Losses.....

If we can manage to do that, i would say we have had a very successful year....:)

Got a lot of the ball but used it poorly. Had a few mates there.

They played very indirect footy. None of the forwards did much other than Fisher, who's kicking was very poor. Most of the time the ball was quickly rebounded.

Was very hot. I think 8 were on bench & a lot of kids got game time- Bower, Jackson, Blackwell, Hartlett, Russell, Murphy who all showed good signs.

Pagan & Kouta were interviewed after the game. Said they were embarrassed but it's only a practice match. They tried experimenting but most things didn't work. Was always going to be hard after 1/4 time when 5 goals down, which has been a problem for a while. Confidence drops quickly after poor starts. Still 2 more practice games to get things right. Things will be better rd 1...hopefully!!

Some of the worst decision making I've seen since last weeks game. Not sure why we insist on bombing it long to 2 on 1 contests (2 Port, 1 Carlton...). Our skills were terrible as well. It was so frustrating sitting there watching simple skill errors.
Only the pre season so I'm not going to worry about it to much for now.
Whitnall was terrible. He can't play man on man in defence and he can't play defensively in the forward line. His only value to the team is a loose defender but I'd prefer Skinny in that role.
Walker did ok in the first three quarters but in the fourth Denis started him on a wing and let him play his own footy and he looked so much better. Hopefully taught Denis something. :P
I liked some of the things Hartlett did. Seems to lack a bit of pace though?

Give us 4 weeks then if we are shit after 4 weeks play kids for the rest of the year and dont play guys who have had enough opportunity. That is after 4 weeks of the regular season.
