Heard part of an interview he gave on 3aw, yesterday I think. When asked what he wanted to do now he'd left Tennis Australia, he said he was looking for a new big challenge in Sports Management, had enjoyed the challenge of turning the Aus Open around from almost a bankrupt, backyard tennis tournament to arguably the best tournament in the world, etc, and that he'd relish the next big sports mgt challenge he could find.

He could be just what we're looking for. Your thoughts?

All respect to Mac, I know him (and know many quite well who have worked under him) - let me assure you, he is a very autocratic operator who thinks it's his way or the highway.

Great bloke, but not for us. Tennis is his thing.

We think alike. Could be a worthwhile pick up as a CEO, but would need to know more about him. Excellent with the media, marketing oriented, experience in negotiating sponsorship deals. On teh surface of it a lot going for him. Malouf's contract expires in June - are we at least talking with him or others?

He would have the right, very sympathetic, contacts in the media, especially Channel 7, which would be handy come the end of this season.

We could do worse.

And if he does operate in a "my way or the highway" manner, maybe that's what's required for the next couple of years, to get everyone pulling in the same direction.

I disagree with that view. There are plenty of examples in AFL of past players/coaches, etc working with opposition clubs in a professional manner:

Carey
Ayres
Parkin did
Ratten, albeit briefly

If he's available, we'd at least have to sound him out you'd reckon.

I can't quite work out if Malouf is doing a good job or not. But whoever our CEO is they need to be doing a GREAT job. Good won't cut the mustard for us right now.

As soon as I'd heard that he had left TA, I wondered if there was a way we could get him to Carlton. Look at what he did for the Australian Open (and Hopman Cup) brand... that kind of turn around is exactly what we need... maybe he could be our Eddie!

long time reader - first time poster.

I think at least approaching McNamee is a great idea. I have seen him at a number of corporate functions associated with the Hopman Cup over the years and corporate people seem to gravitate toward him. Whilst being extremely approachable he also seems calculated in what he says, the kind of guy that if you were ever negotiating with he would always be two or three steps ahead of you.

Having said that I'd imagine we'd have some pretty strong competition for his services from the corporate sector.

I think Malouf is a Hawks support?

So I don't think their team support has any bearing on whether you would assess someone like McNamee.

The lad would want to enjoy a challenge though!

Great Idea!

Forget the money side of it and look at the potential benefits someone like Mcnamee can offer. Doesn't have to be CEO, get him as a consultant or on the Board for a start and see what he can offer.

The club needs to widen its scope and think laterally to find solutions to the predicament its in at the moment

Look as great as that sounds from the outside - it's actually not that great an idea. McNamee is great don't get me wrong - but he hardly saved the Australian Open from the doom position someone on here put it in.

An analogy better used would be Pagan taking over from Schimma in '93 after a 100 point thrashing by the Crows. Pagan inherited some players to build a very good team around...that didn't happen at Carlton.

I'd expect Mac to stay in Tennis - but bolster the Asian side of things...i think his next move could be into China. The Chinese were not impressed that Agassi and Nadal were late (very late) withdrawals from last years Masters tournament and they want to boost their profile to corporate sponsorship and both ATP and WTA.

There are other people around who could help...lots of expats i can think of but is it worth their while - probably not. I'm happy with Malouf right now...I don't see that as our problem - perhaps our marketing strategy is the first thing that needs rectifying.
