An article that didn't make it on carltonfc.com.au:

Reactions to bad news vary with the person – sometimes it’s anger, sometimes it’s misery, and at other times we think back to fonder times. This past week has been a sobering one for Carlton fans, one of disappointment and jolting reminders that our journey to recovery still has a very long way to go. Aside from some simple ‘pot shots’ taken at our great Club in the press, the week’s ‘real’ news has made me recoil back to my past, a time when things seemed simpler and happier but with the constancy of footy in my life – the time of my First Girlfriend.

She was so pretty I could not say a word to her – in fact, the whole association was arranged without my knowledge by the girls at the front of the line-up outside of my classroom. Back then, kids used to line up in rows of boys and girls, and each pairing held hands with their opposite number. The girl at the front of the line, Kylie, was something of a ringleader for all in the class, and it happened upon her to put young Mike and Lelita together. Some whispering into ears, some giggling, a little more whispering, and then suddenly I was told that I was ‘going out’ with a girl I couldn’t even talk to.

I was a tubby, extraordinarily quiet ‘square’ who preferred to spend time in front of an Apple 2E or still play with my lego, rather than talk to people. Especially girls. In a family of boys, girls were very different and very difficult to talk to. What if I said the wrong thing? How embarrassing would that be? And what do you say to a girl anyway? Could I compare lego collections? So here I was, set up in a playground betrothal to a girl I loved but was completely terrified of. The first day passed and little Mike was trembling. Somehow I had followed in the footsteps of my brothers and found myself a girlfriend, but the next step seemed horrifying – was I supposed to talk to her?

Outside the classroom after lunch the class would shuffle into couples so you could hold hands with the ‘right’ person. Kylie arranged the troops to make sure I was looked after, and I found myself holding hands with Lelita for the first time. “Hi Mikeâ€

Thanks Camelboy. Not sure when the logo will go up - they will probably let me know in a couple of weeks.

Verbs, it wouldn't surprise me if you went out with Lelita too. 3 kids by age 20 from memory. George Town is a great place....

ps everyone ended up with David. And he's still there.
