I would like to give 4th chicken the benefit of the doubt on this one and look at it purely from a commercial viewpoint. For those following soccer the ethnic tag associated with it was seen as restricting its capacity to grow. Now that it has been de-ethnicised we have seen corporate support for the game swell and media coverage that was previously non existent or arguably undermining the game come on board. His concern may be at the fact that our recent deals may dissuade big business from doing business with us. I personally doubt it

We need all the corporate support we can get and until the big players see us as a worthwhile brand we have to do with what we can get from relatively unknown companies.

McLabour sounds more like a Scottish name if anything

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't businesses sponsor footy clubs in order to gain extra exposure. The mere fact that we've never heard of them is probably the reason they're sponsoring our footy club.

I had never heard of Indesit, but now that they're sponsoring the Blues we've all discovered that they're a well known brand in Europe. I don't see the big deal in business wanting to expand their market into Australia.

Let's just be pleased that there there is actally some sponsorship money coming our way.

1. I AM happy that we are building up a more sponsors
2. The comment about 'limiting' sponsorship to italian companies was obviously tongue in cheek - however it does query the overly italian flavour of companies - in recent times (aside from the 3 I've mentioned in the first post) there have also been lavazza, sirena, bertocchi - I've probably missed a few others as well.
3. Which brings me to my next point - for the most part sponsors seem to come and go quietly. Does sirena still sponsor the club? Lavazza? xbox? AGL even? - it seems almost as if most of the minor sponsors will 'fade' into oblivion once the money is taken - there is no publicity. Ask a non-carlton, or perhaps even a carlton person who doesnt read the various boards about - how many would have associated sirena with carlton in the past? How many would know who our suit sponsors are? I cant even recall the shoe sponsor - the only way I'd find out would be to trawl back through news archives and the like. I dont think I've even seen a public announcement before where the club thanks a minor sponsor at the end of the agreement. Its not much but its small things like that which make a difference and it is another opportunity to get the name out there.
4. More on italian heritage - some people seem to have misconstrued the comments as some racial thing. Its not - I'm not italian and I do have italian friends - I also lived in carlton when I was a lot younger and also spent part of my primary schooling there. The term 'underlying problem' actually refered more to most sponsors seeming to come from 'old' money or through directors rather than actually seeking out new money. Reading back it was poorly written (the italian background bit) though I hadnt slept in 2 days and didnt proofread. What I was trying to refer to was the continual association of the club with lygon st and being italian (often through media). Yes, we had a rich heritage through the 70s but times have changed. People have moved on - so why doesnt the club work harder to change the 'brand' from the community/ethnic club. In the 70s, people spoke of lygon st and carlton (the italian connection) - similarly colingwood was known for the greek heritage (well from my understandng anyway). 30yrs latter - the general public will still associate carlton fans with going down to lygon st to celebrate after a win. If we really want to recognise the italian heritage of the club then perhaps a better approach would be to just have lygon st sponsor us (ie $200/restaurant etc on the strip) and have on the sponsors listed as 'little italy'. However not all carlton supporters will go to lygon st and quite frankly a lot of the food there nowadays is quite poor. Collingwood? - its all about the lexus center, emirates and the like ie they continually push the corporate image - the brand if you like. Like it or not the clubs image does need work - we are a long way behind most other clubs in our ability to sell our sponsors to the public.

4th I usually like your posts and can see where you are coming from here . But if the club was trying to promote the Italian image I think they would have hung onto whats his name over at Windy Hill

disagree - there are no avenues/opportunities for such team selection processes anymore (unlike soccer pre A-league). Perhaps think of it less as a club decision to promote the italian image but more what they are not doing to say that as a club, whilst we acknowledge the proud heritage we have moved on from there to bigger and better things. We have grown with the times.

Its the exact same arguement that blues supporters seem to bring up on bigfooty and the like - 16 premierships and blackfriday etc - Feel free to acknowledge it but dont get caught up in it. There are 2 ways of looking at it
1. We have won 16 premierships and consequently are the most successful club in the comp (c.f saints and 1 flag etc) or...
2. Whilst we have won 16 premierships and are proud of that achievement, we are fully focussed on winning the next one - and we will do everything in our power to try to achieve that before you (be it stkilda, or perhaps 'better' opposition would be Essendon*/collingwood).

I prefer to follow the second line of thinking - but then I'm a glass half empty kind of guy

1. We breached the cap and were robbed of our picks and that is why we have been performing badly. That is why we won the spoon and had the floggings. or...
2. We breached the cap, got punished for it but are now focused on carrying the club to the 17th flag.

Again, I prefer the 2nd line of thinking (which is why i have always had issues with the current board)
