Some people are never happy!Struggle to find a sponsor now we get some of the "wrong kind"

IIRC, Lavazza and Sirena were guernsey sponsors for one off games in 2004 when Toshiba decided they were only going to be joint major sponsors instead of major sponsors in their own right. Lavazza and Sirena came in to cover the shortfall. I don't think it was ever expected that they would be long term sponsors of the club.

Avco and that Singaporean company were handy sponsors.

What I was trying to refer to was the continual association of the club with lygon st and being italian (often through media). Yes, we had a rich heritage through the 70s but times have changed. People have moved on - so why doesnt the club work harder to change the 'brand' from the community/ethnic club.

4th I think the association with Italian heritage stems from the very fact that a number of our supporters do in fact come from Italian backgrounds. I'm not sure what it is you want the club to be doing to push against this.

Overall I think we are percieved as a club with one of the larger supporter bases, a good percentage, but not an overwhelming majority, of whom are of Italian descent. Big deal.

I think what he's saying is that we're falling back to our older links for our recent sponsorship opportunities, which is great, but it doesn't appear as though we're looking outside those 'Italian links' to for opportunities to expand our sponsorship base.

Its not a criticism of the sponsors we have obtained, but a call to expand and look elsewhere in addition.

MC Labour is a good start.

Yeah, see we can extend beyond our Italian heritage, just ask Wayne Johnston. :P

I can see where 4C is coming from re the old money comment, but equally many people have been calling out for the club to try and extend it's sponsorship relations with our core supporter base.

It might not be a perfect result, who really knows, but given our parlous state of affairs I think the club is to be congratulated for vastly improving on our sponsorship list from 2005.

It is just one more step towards achieving the goals in line #2.

I don't mind them claiming Compo, but I don't want anyone claiming Campo, Italian Style.

We don't want him back.

Beggars cant be choosers and anyway there is nothing wrong with the Italian community having a presence at the club.......we have always had a good multicultural flavour down at the Blues and theres nothing wrong with continuing that tradition...
The club have gone out and got sponsors like we all wanted them to do and you have to acknowledge the work to get the deals done...
Dont think 4th chicken was being racist about it at all...just commenting on the level of support from one ethnic section of the community and whether that is healthy.....you take the money when you can get it....IMO

Agros mate.... at AFL House was on record a few months ago saying there would be no mergers, relocations etc etc and now we have the cash strapped Roos being lined up for the Gold Coast...Demetriou is a liar.....we are not out of the woods yet even with the MC labour deal and these smaller sponsorships and the club need every dollar to make sure we dont get the phone call to move to Sydney....

Demetriou talks with forked tongue -he gave collo the guarantee if bradley and SOS fessed up penalty would be lessened for salary cap breaches - he of course re-neged
As for the ethnicity of our supporter base it has always been that way and one of the things that make the Blues attractive as a football club

That's why the 1st round win (after not winning the first round for years) was pure gold. If we back up in Perth then they'll sign up in droves at our first home game.

Italians aren't the only ones who wear suits and use washing machines.

Eh, 4C why you no like-a the sponsorships?

In breaking news, the Carlton Football Club received a cash donation of $3 million dollars from someone who wished only to be identified as 'Dom'.

"We like-a supporting our own, so we did a favour for these boys. When the time comes, they will do a favour or two for us, capiche? Now get outta my face!"

The Carlton Football Club was not available for comment.

Now that is where I disagree - its attractive for some but that line of thinking actually makes it unattractive for many others. Its why many people in this country never followed 'local' soccer previously - if you arent from that group it doesnt appear attractive and may (not always but may) make it harder for people to feel welcome. The bluebloods philosophy is different imho - everyone can learn to become arrogant, everyone can build up their finances if they have the discipline/luck etc - if you are say middle eastern or asian, no matter how you try, you will never become more 'italian' ;)

also nice to see at least a few posters have sort of figured out what I was on about and managed to stay on topic :)

as an aside - am I correct in saying that collingwood was seen as embracing 'greek' heritage in the 70s along the lines of carlton being italian?

Collingwood? - Sto Dialo....

I think the Daicos (tenuous) mecedonian link may have caused that impression.

Don't think it's a problem NO MATTER HOW you look at it....

Every which way I read the posts 4thC they sound like "I'm not racist but...." and "...some of my best friends are black/asian/wogs etc"....

As Agro said (Agro, did I live next door to you?) ...There was a huge population of Greeks and Italians living around CArlton, Brunswick, Fitzroy and they as well as their kids realised that Footy was a part of Melbourne and supported!

These guys are now the corporates we are trying to get sponsoring the club....is it that difficult to understand???
The generational wave will dictate what you'll see when....The senior corporate or political figures (Hi Bracksy!) are now coming from the 2nd gen. of those immigrants in the 50s and 60s...and so on.

Chances of getting a major Asian sponsor is very slim....why?
Because the average Vietnamese or Cambodian (Chinese origin) came out in the 70sis working his butt off getting his kids through school and developing his business/income security/savings/home.
The next generation (probably only in their 30s now) are building on these , climbing the socila/legal/corporate ladder NOW....

they won't be potential sponsor targets for another 20 years....

Now lets see...Wogs in the 50s ....sponsors now about 50 years later...
Asians in the 70s...sponsors in about 20 years..or 50 years after the immigration wave....

Capisce?
Katalaves?
Cmprenez?
