forced upon us when? If you mean this year

Who was coaching us last summer?

Seen the Roos running game from the 90's?

The other way to look at it is that we now have the runners for his running game.

Tex, Carrots, Simmo, AB, Fisher, Betts, Murph - thats 7 runners, by this I mean they cover a lot of territory, (of various speeds) added to the older guys in the last 3 years - and more to come.

The new rule changes and the way they interpret the rules has changed the game and forced new gameplans from teams....everyone is overpossessing the ball and playing keepings off when they cant run the ball...you touch a bloke after a mark now and its 50 metres..so you cant hold on and slow the game down....only way to slow the game down is flood so we get keepings off for 5 minutes until a point is scored and then we are off to the races again....the proof of this in the amount of possessions teams are having...record numbers...Pagan didnt change the game plan..the AFL did and why...makes good TV footy..good TV footy means more TV rights money......

Denis Pagans' sole game plan was to kick it to Carey and if he didnt mark it have all his little blokes like Winnie Abraham run on to it...we didnt have a Wayne Carey or too many runners and still dont so he had no gameplan...

We lack probably two classy runners and one of those needs some muscle.....dont call Fisher a runner either or AB....AB is a blue collar extractor.....Carrots is a nice player but if you are trying to beat Geelong for example you need a bit more size and power..Ablett, Bartel, Enright, Corey, Chapman and Milburn are just too big and strong...Roos have a fair midfield and Geelong just trampled them......a young Riccuito and a classy runner like Dal Santo would compliment Murphy, Stevens, Walker etc and win us a flag...

Good post Danny - it will be a long season and still need more talent but am delighted that we have carrrazzo bentick simpson murphy walker waite fisher thorton sporn livo all playing and making contributions. Most apart from Sporn abmOST APART FROM sPORN AND LIVO
Hopefully we will see Sentanta Kennedy and a couple of others elevated to the seniors shortly
Murphy won the rising star - we won the first game and didnt get blown away by the Dockers but fought back well in a game where apart from Fev most of our gun players stevens lappin kouta waite were well held.We have had a good start

The fact that Teague Wiggins and Prenda havent got a game yet says our squad is better than in the last 2 years.
As for the game style it has changed but instead of being pilloried isnt it good that Denis is not too old or rigid to change and hey perhaps he is ADAPTING TO CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES

Danny - I am happy with what I have seen so far but then again i was happy after 4 or 5 rounds last year.

He was out coached again on Saturday night and Freo had done their homework all the play makers from round one - Stevens - Lapiin - Scotland - Waite were kept Quiet and IMO he lost it at the selection table by picking a runner in place of a marking option forward.

I was really impressed with Fevs output and he kept providing an option if he keeps this up all year he will get that 80+ goals - but he always starts the years well.

I would still rather see Russell- Kennedy - Hartlett - Edwards and Bower given a go - Especially Russell .

Its not about winning this year its about commitment and development of those draft picks we have all longed for -playing Chambers is not development

How does keeping those 4 players quiet relate to being outcoached? Tell me what you should have Denis done.

I'll give you a couple examples as to why we lost:

Lappin kicked the ball straight to Pavlich in the goal square, Pavilch kicks a goal... outcoached.
Lappin decides to bump Crowley when he should have tackled him, Crowley bounces off him, spins around and kicks a goal..... outcoached.
I can come up with a few others if you would like, that 15 point margin will be wiped out 3 times over.

I'll wait and see if the hawthorn model works before I endorse it.

I was happy with Chambers. You need run over there. Thought the mistake was in taking DeLuca, I'd have rathered another smaller runner - gees I knew we'd miss Fish. Just the sort of ground for him  Or Setanata perhaps. Over there demands lots of players who can change direction fast.

We are developing. Russell may be left to develop in the Bullies. Think Kennedy by the sound of it may get in before him. And Saddo. Unleash the Beast

Its all about self preservation right now.

I dont normally post in these threads

because many of you are so good at foretelling the future and know everything

but

one point has to be....

A player being kept quiet DOES NOT MEAN that the opposition Coach won the day. It means you have a good match-up.

Joe Misiti always used to beat Earl until 1995 or so
Mark bayes always used to beat Sticks
Ray Hall beat Waite last year, it doesnt mean that Wallace won the Coaching.

Until last weekend Livingstone used to always beat McPharlin too!

And self-preservation is a funny one. 21 wins in 88 matches and he's preserving his butt? Some Carlton fans dont want 4 years on the bottom waiting for more & more draft picks, they would much prefer to be credible sooner. The question is if we did what you want would the Club even survive without being sent to NZ South Island as part of the Pacific Football League's expansion? Maybe that will change when Hawthorn win the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 Premierships on the back of being horrific for years, but until then, Carlton needs to win.

What you want Denis to do is do what Alistair Clarkson did with Zac Dawson on Anthony Rocca. Is that what you mean?

wow! 2 games in and i thought it has been a satisfactory start.....particularly in light of the fact that we are a 10 - 14 placed side going into the year (or worse some would say).

Aspirationaly all i want this year is a committed performnce and to follow a group of young fellas developing to their potential.

So far so good - despite a first half against Freo we have delivered in my books. O.K so a bunch of young fellas got manhandled and roughed up - we got caught out.....but what the hell does anyone expect with what we have to play with. That is a short term consequence and a tactic we will be faced with as we grow up.

The long term consequence is that with the right level of patience and committment to the ball and player development we will win.

Perhaps dannyboy is right - the sky is falling.

nah, hang on........i know that's bulls%$t.

Preservation? keep it for the pickles, tinned meats and jam. We have nothing to preserve - its all upside.
