BIG crowds at the footy's early rounds have not been confined to the AFL. What about at the VFL, in particular the Northern Bullants' home game against Coburg last weekend, when so many fans turned up not only did they sell out of the VFL Record for the first time ever but the blokes manning the barbecue also ran out of meat.

Fortunately, the latter problem was alleviated when staff checked the kitchen where, much to their relief, they found a huge tray of raw meat sealed in glad wrap, the contents of which were immediately thrown onto the barbie and sold almost as quickly as they could be cooked.

The only problem was, the tray of meat just happened to be first prize in the club's raffle, due to be drawn during the match. After some quick phone calls Bullants' general manager Garry O'Sullivan organised a new meat tray so the lucky winner didn't go home empty-handed.

Interesting comment from Mike Sheahan on 3AW on Tuesday nights sports show. He said $20 million worth of past Club Memberships HAVE NOT been renewed in the past 2 years.

That is staggering if the AFL is now saying crowds are up. There must be an awful lot of 'Walkups' each week.

Regards Cazzesman

Isn't he referring to the "churn" rate?
Each club loses something like 15% of their members who don't renew, but gain a little more in new memberships according to one article I read a day or so ago.

It goes to show that the "perceived value" of a club membership to new members must be pretty poor as they dont renew.

But as far as AFL Memberships go - the AFL take the view and I quote from the illustrious CEO of the AFL "Andturd Demetrispew":

" ......if you really are unhappy with your AFL Membership, don't renew, the competition will go on without you ...."

To the AFL we are just "stupid plebs" who will cough up money year after year and there are always enough of us to ensure that the competition gets a regular base load of money.

Maybe Collingwood/Essendon*/Adelaide/West Coast have more "stupid plebs" than any other club.

To the average punter (and I'm talking NRL / ARU and AFL) getting to the game is enough .. you buy your Record (Big League / whatever the ARU has), you buy your pie / ticket for the meat tray / sausage sandwich / beer etc, after which you go home to watch the replay on the tele (or to check if you got your head on).

What benefit is there to joining your club / the AFL? Apart from knowing that if you don't have your money, you might survive, but if your club didn't have it, they wouldn't? That's my view, anyway. I mean, if Carlton was relegated / merged / shut down I would more than likely do to the AFL what I did to the NRL in 1997 ..

I joined CFC at the end of 2002 (which turned out to be a good investment!!) but I don't get more than a few magazines, a nice hat every year, a lanyard which I wear at work, and a few e-mails. I could opt for the lowest option but I had hoped to get to a couple of games this year (sigh) .. I suppose if I was living in Melbourne that would be a completely different situation.

nothing clever happening here .. nothing to see .. move along quietly

Doesn't matter, we get the nice portion of the gate takings for home games, so we shoudl go ok on the back of those too if we look competitive, and we do so far.

Only if you can make it to a game do you get your hat. I couldn't get to any last year so no hat for me or Lil' Miss Wojee. I'm guessing they send interstate members their hats.

there was an announcement on sunday that the gate had exceeded expectations and that the hot food was running out ... i remember hearing that there was some meat available, must have been when they discovered that tray

i could attend every dome this year if i wanted ... just apply for medallion club tickets through work and hey presto i become a theatre-goer ...

Yep the Doggies. Brother of Shane. Mighty Bloke. Great get for the Bullies.

A real AFL traveller and jack of all trades.
