Does that now mean that Collo's position on the board becomes vacant or is he just stepping down from the presidency while keeping his board position?

If his position is now vacant can Clarke be drafted/voted in? How would this work?

well looks like Collo putting up the boots and was what we needed when Elliot era finished but if i rem he was never goin to be there for the long haul and may have been there longer than expected.
to replace Collo

Well from the new candidates the only one who has stated he wants to be president which has been Lee and he at least has stated what he wants to do and how he would change things and from what i have read above seems to have a bit more personality

Not only does Smorgon have the personality of a newt, but from all reports, he is a thoroughly unpleasant character who makes enemies quickly in the business world.

Fitzpatrick would be fabulous, but according to a guy who works with him, he does not have the time. This was born out recently when he accepted the role as chairman of some organisation.

If this is true, and someone suitable is not found quickly, it could destabalise the whole club...and that's the last thing we can afford right now.

There's no excuse to not renew your membership now if you didn't like the way the club was going under Collo.. :x

Collins to quit as Blues boss, Smorgon to step in

Goes out on a limb but Ian is way too smart to leave the club in a bad position.

Puts balls on line (gulp) but there is no way Ian would leave CFC in chaos as some may assume he will.

Whether it's Smorgon or Fitzpatrick or Lees or you mum, he will have thought this through - you don't go through three years of shit just to throw in the towel - that's not his way

Does this mean we are going to have put up with another election for the vacant position on the board?

Spare us the pain and put Clarke on the board because I don't want to put up with more rhetoric during the footy season.

The departure of Collins will further reduce the board, which numbered 12 when his Carlton One ticket swept John Elliott's administration from power in late 2002, to just eight members.

Also interesting. :?

We are in BIG trouble......... the only guy on the board who knows how to run a football club and understands the AFL world is going.

I for one beg that Collo to stay's on........

and for all you Collo bashers i say to you shame, we are becoming the next Richmond, Saints with board member turn overs, presidentcy turn over, childish bickering amongst our own, no stability all because some fools want to have there 15 minutes of fame.

SAD SAD SAD day

Fitzy doesnt have the time because he doesnt want to make the time.
Running a club like Carlton needs commitment.
He doesnt want to make that kind of commitment to Carlton. In my opinion it says he isnt the right man.

Im sure over the next year a few people will jump out of the woodwork. Mayb e Fitzy reconsiders and is one of those....

I doubt it though.

Thanks Collo for dragging us through our darkest days.

Your contribution as President cleaning up Elliot's legacy will not be forgotten.

Enjoy the peace and quiet, and all the best for the future.

Yep Thanks Collo for steadying the ship, and getting us on our feet.
We now need someone to take us forward again.

No Humphrey B Bear types though, I want someone confident and full of voice.

Collo, thanks for steadying the ship.

History will judge you well.

Has anyone talked to Dick Pratt about the presidency?

From what i have heard, ( 3rd party, not gospel) the SPOTLIGHT will be on the new president next year. Him leaving now saves for a bitter battle at the end of the year

President will be Smorgon "for the timebeing."
No solidified, long term presidency as of yet for him.
He's a very decent, hard working man and I think its a disgrace that so many on here fail to give him even a chance..

I don't think anyone is downplaying his business credentials, Josh, but a lot of them are saying that what may be better for the club, especially long term, is a more media-friendly personality. Unfortunately, more like *shudder* (Sorry for saying this) Eddie McGuire. In these days of media accessibility, business acumen is no longer the thing which makes of breaks clubs and their public perception.

Collo was the right man for a couple of years, as there were too many players thinking they ran the club. We needed a president that would counter balance the fat cat culture that Elliot left us with.

But then time moves on and club circumstances changed, the main job moved from playing the tough nut negotiator to starting to look forward and provide a vision... start redeveloping the Blues as a brand. At this collo was found wanting.

For the first 2 years I say thanks Collo! Now is the time to go (well a little late but it is a lucky man who times these things perfectly)

Smorgon sounds like a "safe hands" president. But IMHO he is exactly what we dont need. He probably will do his best to keep our financials from deteriorating, but is that what we need? No I think we need an inspirational leader one that can get corporate sponsorship back into the club, can get us air time via his personality, make members and players feel good about our club again. I dont see Smorgon doing this.
