With Collins gone, the election of Lee to the board, and a soon to be filled vacancy you now have your much cherished fresh blood, new ideas, new directions, etc, etc. Given you have had a lot to say about the lack of ideas and direction at the club what expectations do you have of this relatively new board for the next 12 months?

I think Synbad will say that we need fresh blood, new ideas, new directions, etc, etc. And given the current lack of ideas and direction at the club he will only see doom and gloom for the next 12 months...and beyond

What do we need - what sort of person - with what sort of skills - is Marcus Clarke being considered

I think you're wrong. Sometimes people take Synbad the wrong way. Sometimes you need to read between the lines when reading a Synbad post. :-D

I wasnt having a go. I am genuinely interested in what he has to say given his views on whats wrong with the club. However now that Ive had the time to check out othere parts of the site I think my questions are redundant. It seems he doesnt rate Smorgon becuase he's a beancounter. A beancounter and a focus on beancounting is exactly what this club needs after the Elliott years. A top 200 ASX compnay chair is not a bad score in my view so I am willing to give him some time at least 2 to 3 years.

A report in todays Age newspaper quotes Smorgans top priority being "on field success". Unfortunately Smorgan doesnt elaborate on exaclty how he is going to attain this "on field success".

well onfield success will bring better crowds, more members, better fixturing, more free to air games which = more money.

We win games we on the way back up, we lose games we going no where fast

I just hope to god that we dont trade picks for seasoned players. Collo said in his last speech for dennis not to bend over for noone and continue rebuilding the list

If he can find the money he might be planning to ‘buy’ a premiership.

Are you an accountant???
Beancounting can be good but initiatives and growth are what we need today.
I wanted collo to go because he has done everything he could for us.
However, not at the expense of the hyenas taking over.
Blokes who wont grow the brand.. wont whip up any enthusiasm.
I didnt want Collo to go to be replaced by people who are not fit to tie his shoelaces as far as running a football club is concerned.

We need REAL change.. not from dopes from within,

Valmorbida got in by the skin of his teeth and he is VP .. with the a guy who will be in the Guiness book of records as far as board members length in office is concerned.
And a President who has given nothing worthwhile in three years.

Can anyone tell me what smorgon has actually initiated???

Lee has been isolated as the newie.. make no mistake.!!!

This might just be me... and again, I'm new to this site so take what I say with a grain of salt... but I reckon we could do with some on-field success.

How do you win games in a hurry????

On field success is about patience and planning.

It just doesnt happen cos your supporters and your president yearn for it.

With more average on field success you wouldnt have Murphy or Kennedy.

Were in a hurry to get to mediocrity.. cos if youre patient the system works for you.

At the moment mediocrity is our aspirational stretch target! After years of being hogwash I think most people would take an 8th place right about now.

And as for patience, where is the patience for the Board? Where is the patience for righting a decade of wrongs that will take many a long year to recover from? We have to be patient, theres no quick fix.

Completely agree that the brand needs work and we need to be out there for ideas, but we can only do that within the boundaries of our cash position. To do otherwise is to flirt with our ability to operate as a going concern, itself a tenuous notion. Being patient may allow us to extract some serious casl from the new TV rights deal, redirected to help us out... who knows?

We need the big ideas, and we need those with the time to commit to them. Although upset at the likely correctness of the 'newbie' label, at least Lee did this. This is what has to be encouraged on the large and small scale, yet so few pick up the reins and do anything about it.

It's so much easier to complain!

(NB - this last line is not directed at Synbad, more a general comment. In many comments on the Board, I agree entirely with Synners)

Yeah, I surprised myself with that one.

But it's an interesting question. What should be the Board PLan in this regard (given we have no idea what it is... do they?).

Should we be:

* Planning to make the Final 8 by 2008 (say)
OR
* Planning on winning a Premiership by 2012 (say).

The inferred difference of the two is that if we sat on the bottom for longer, we may extract juicier picks now and set ourselves up for a huge tilt when those players hit 23-24 years of age.

From my point of view I take the first line, because given our financial position and woeful mismanagement to 2003 I believe we need to be credible before we can be dominant. The problem with that view could be that it is shortsighted (is that right Synbad) and that by doing that we may not get close to a Premiership with that team - especially if we're just filling holes.

What's our biggest gap between Premierships anyway, 23 years (1915 - 1938)??????????

Synbad, Im not an accountant just concerned about the debt levels and cash flow of the club. In order to grow the brand the club needs to spend money or attract significant investment. Why is it that the scum (cwood) can beat off sponsors with a stick but the most successful club of the 20th century is doing it hard? with all due respect to MC Labour services its not quite the same as lexus, wizard, emirates, Maccas, etc, etc. If this is obvious to me it must be obvious to the 'brains' in the club. The carlton brand has generally been associated with success (16 flags), influential supporters, and innovative corporate practices (legit ones not whatwas practiced during the Elliott years) plus a huge supporter base. I dont think this is being leveraged off enough by the marketing dept. I'm not privy to the sort of info you seem to have about the 'hyenas' so all I can do is give Smorgon some time and hope he can restore the club to its former superpower status.

I think we simply have to do the best we can, but be mindful of the bigger picture. By that i mean draft kids, not retreads.

We are in the fortunate position that we won't have as many older guys retiring as we will having younger guys making their mark for the next few years, so natural improvement will hopefully see us in the 8 in a few years time. But I hope we shelve the top-up mentality forever, it helped to destroy our list in the long-term, and it looks like the Kangaroos will learn their lesson too...

I don't really think there is any danger of reverting to a top-up strategy (he says knelt down in prayer  ). The retreads only came through over that period when we basicially didn't have any meaningful draft picks.

If we continue taking the best draft picks we can over the next 2-3 years then we will have a bloody good list with our current crop of kids pushing it with the best of the competition
