If people want to compare JR's progress to anyone, they should probably look at Danny Myer who Richmond took at 12. Both similar build, similar players. Both appear to be at about the same standard too.

In a perfect world yes but we don't live in a perfect world. Luke Hodge was miles behind Judd and Ball. How do they compare now after a few years?

Give him time and then pass judgement.

Still Judd after he kicked four goals on the weekend and I think he'll be an alltime great. :)

Fast becoming the new Livo on TC. Will JR be another player who will get a 10 page thread every time his name is in a thread?

Speaks volumes about the bloke that he only slid to 3 in a 'super draft' when there were queries over his shoulders.

Good reply. somone on another forum wants to get rid off him. H eends at least a season of playing in the seniors rather than being in and out. Seems to be a hallmark of Pagans though of not playing youngsters consistently.

Keep playing him.

I agree. we should start thinking about who we can trade so we can get another first round pick in the upcoming 'super' draft. pick 1 is ours for sure but the priority pick is in between first and second round. we should look at a trade for another top 10 pick.

If Russell is released to one of his two home based teams in SA, you will be spewing watching him grow and develop into an AFL champion.

We shouldn't consider trading our youth, regardless of the fact that no one would want any of our fringe players (except maybe Sporn)

It must be extremely difficult for these kids to play with any confidence knowing that the runner could be heading in your direction at any time.

Minutes mean everything. Walker, Simpson, Carazzo, Bentick, Betts etc. are only now starting to get good minutes and look more comfortable as a result. Why wouldn't Russell be any different. Imagine the confidence and/or experience he would glean from the support of his coach and a guaranteed 100+ mins in front of a full house at the MCG against Collingwood and Essendon*.

What have we got to lose... let them play.

PS - It'd also help if the kids didn't have to cover for the opponents of Stevens, Kouta, Scotland and Houlihan as well as their own.

I would play him on Dale Thomas this week and show I had some faith in him....Thomas is fleet of foot but not physical and would be a suitable matchup and I would ask Russell to accept the challenge and tell him he gets a game next week regardless....
We have a fair bit invested in Jordan Russell and he isnt going anyhwere until we get him through his apprenticeship and only then can you evaluate him.....Crows and Port would give you nothing in return anyway at this stage....keep the faith like we did with Kade Simpson and I believe Russell can make it as a player....

OOhhhhhh Lovers 8) 8)

But the post is spot on !!! JR Stays and JR plays this week . I hope so..
If JR gets dropped this week i will be even more disappointed in our Coach, MC and the decision makers.

I'm happy for Russell to play another week also.

Question related to this discussion, but not specifically aimed at Russell. If any young kid gets picked and doesn't set the world alight, how many games do you think that they should be played before being dropped back to the two's? And I'm think more of the rookie/almost rookie player, rather than someone who's played 20+ games and not cemented themselves as a senior player.

At least two or three, even if they show no sign of improvement in the games.

Why? Becuase if they were putting together a really shoddy effort, then by the end of two or three games they might habe 40 minutes to an hour of match play under their belt.

They go back to reserves, a similar situation arises to something they mucked up in the seniors, but here they have a bit more time because the game is a bit slower, they get through it the right way, or someone else does and they stop and think "Hey, that's how you do it." and they learn.

Or they find the solution in a drill or match simulation at training. You can talk to them and you can drill them all you like but you have to give them a run and let them learn at some point.

Mj...I'll take that as your happy with my suggestion  .....If JR could get a break even game with Thomas or a win then it might kick start his career.. a bit like AW when he played on Aker.
I also think he needs to start on the ground rather than coming on when we are behind or struggling.....hard to get into the game when your teammates are struggling to get a kick and cant give you a few easy ones to get you going.....Kade Simpson could tell you that from experience.
