Your initial post Bosustow is symptomatic of the problem you seem to be talking about - ok intent, shocking delivery. Very poor way to put what is an interesting and difficult issue for us at the moment; really, to utilise such words says more about you as a person than anything else you were trying to say.

Back on topic - must admit -more depressed than Ive been for some while after leaving last fridays match -given skill errors /clangers were even worse than the week before against Hawthorn when they were excruciating - Richmond were shocking and we were worse in the skill area - basic kicking into player on the mark - hitting lace out Richmond player in between Carlton players - crashing into each other in marking contests- triple grabbing marks - no idea on creating space - Richmond all the space in the world after kick ins

It is a grave problem, because you can;t really teach a player to kick. They're good or they;re not.

The mitigating statement in this problem is that "there is no-one to kick to!". But even when there are players to kick to we often miss them.

The one that worries me the most is Walker - definite A-grader if he could dispose better. His wrong foot kicking is not worthy of a number 2 pick, but I still have high hopes for him.

Seriously, these guys are playing the HIGHEST GRADE of footy. You'd think their basic skills would be good enough to even qualify @ that level?

Which Carlton are you talking about?

Quarter 1 v Richmond or Quarter 4 v Richmond?

Huge differences between the kicking skills.

To me that's a pretty clear sign of struggling under pressure / youth growing up. It takes time.

Problem of our game plan. So many blokes behind the ball that we have to kick to hugely outnumbered target when we go forward. Very hard, almost impossible to hit a target when outnumbered as it has to be so precise. Most teams would have a problem being that precise under pressure under those circumstances. It's also why teams playing Carlton show sh1t skills too because they're too kicking into an outnumbered flooded forward line. Usually though, the opposition has more numbers forward than we do because we have so many back and thus still find a way through our defence. Hence, a few times, we've been 5-6 goals, until we then, with nothing to lose, attack instead and get back in the game and nearly win it.

The penny might drop one day. The game plan may save us a hiding but doesn't help us win many games. I'd prefer to risk a few thrashings attacking to gives us the chance of a few wins. Help develop our players more too as they get some freedom and learn to be more proactive. Then you'll see their skills improve.

It's similar 1999 in many ways, although that side is alot better than the current one so I won't even try to make a comparison there as this side's young, just an analogy. Remember how bad our skills were for alot of that season. They were awful sometimes.When, though, we really focussed properly and decided we really wanted it later that year, we miraculously ended up using the ball well and finished up in the GF despite only winning 12 matches thoughout the year. Sometimes it shows it's up to the players too.

KK it's pointless using the argument that 'well you're an expert obviously you go and show them how to do it better'. If you aren't executing the fundamental skills required for your chosen profession properly then surely you'd expect to not produce quality work and hence probably would not last very long. KK, these are professional footballers, some of whom can not execute the most rudimentary skills of our game to a sufficient standard. It's not about pinpointing passes 50m down the ground on your left foot or skills with a similarly high degree of difficulty, the most galling thing is that some players (not exclusive to our club but an endemic problem throughout most of our side) simply can not kick and in some cases handball to AFL standard and it is killing us.

Of course pressure plays a part and contributes to poor skills but we make skill errors in open space with no opposition player in sight. You could name the players with better than average skills on one hand (some of whom are actually extremely skillful by any standard). But poor skills result in turnovers, turnovers often result in goals and concession of too many goals costs you games of footy. We need our skills to improve dramatically throughout the whole side.

You're 100% right, and I have no problem with anything you're saying. the biggest bugbear I have with footy is that so-called "professional" footballers have poorer skills than the "part-timers" of the 80s. I don't advocate training 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, but it's plainly obvious that some of the players simply don't take some training seriously enough, and some plainly don't make much of an effort to improve the parts of their game that require it. As such, it's not very professional.

My point in my post above was that of all of the posts Bosustow has made, not one of them has been the slightest bit positive, or encouraging towards Carlton or any of the players. He's just not viewing things remotely objectively, and if he was more positive about anything, then maybe I wouldn't have had a swipe at him like that.

Good point jim & I recall that well, particularly a game against St K at PP that we won, despite our skills being shocking.

Sooo Denis do you think the message is getting through?

I said positive thing at the beginning of the year..Problem is as soon as you say something POSITIVE about THIS TEAM, it all turns to worse than sh!t in the weeks after that in the most frustrating of ways IE: P!ssing away games that could have been ours: Swans & Richmond two perfect examples.

I mean looks at Houla, the guy gets 30 possessions a game of which 20 would be under NO pressure and yet, the guy is NO MATCHWINNER. In fact the day Houla becomes a match winner, I'll k!ss my own arse! Likewise Simpson, Carrazzo, Thornton and Scotland are champion clangerers, even Stevo! Poor skills under no pressure is a disgrace and wrecking the game. Thank goodness we don't have to watch Prenda kick off his shins anymore!!!

And yet, when you see a guy like Murphy come along, the guy has poise, delivers passes beautifully, and he's only 18, you realise that yes, there ARE players that can play footy the way it's supposed to, and YES they play for CARLTON.

When we have about 10 players of that QUALITY, then I will sing you a bloody ARIA, but for now I have to watch Deluca, a guy who needs *GLOVES* to get his soft accountant hands ready and has the turning circle of an Iraqi tank patrol. I've accepted amongst my mates (who support other teams) that Carlton are a laughing stock, and week in week out those players mentioned above re-inforce that fact. After a while I just laugh at them, coz each week they exceed my expectations of bad professional footy. I really, really wanna stop laughed AT them, and would prefer the inspiring glow of laughing WITH them when they pump sides, but thats at least half a decade away.......
