Talkback callers and unofficial Blues websites have been scathing in their appraisal of coach Denis Pagan and several of his high-profile players this week after the Blues' ugly loss to Richmond last Friday.

More people read this website than we realise...

That would be the case if you ignore the posts complaining about Bryan, Davies, Deluca, Houlihan, Livingston, Russell, Sporn, Thornton, Waite, Walker and Wiggins...all who are under 25.

There was little at all complaining about the Carlton players after the Richmond game, but there's plenty of complaing across the board, about both young and old players here and at the other sites.

Unfortunately, the positive people are farting against thunder sometimes.

The main problem I had with the article is that Smorgon, rather than stress US, stressed that every team loves rivalry with Collingwood. That is, that teams like ours are beholden to Collingwood to get big matches, big crowds.

Did anyone brief this man, our president, on what the hell NOT to say?

He wants us to stay positive, yet he's downplaying our own team.....

Some bland, even defensive comments from Smorgon.

This is really frustrating. Forget the 1-4 record (and that of previous years), we are about to embark on a HOME game against a traditional foe and we are telling our supporters to be patient. This is about as rousing as it gets.
Quote:
Smorgon hopes facing old-foe Collingwood on Sunday sparks the team.

"If you have to ask about the traditional rivalry of all the clubs, Collingwood has got to be the biggest," he said. "Collingwood is big for everybody. Everybody loves to hate them."

Why not just say, "look don't come this week, actually don't even buy a membership for a few years cos there is nothing we can do."

Why not talk up the match as the massive encouter it is, talk up the kids like Walker, Murphy, Waite and Betts, highlight the debut of Kennedy and that he will be a superstar for the club for many years, urge the fans to turn up because we are going to throw everything we have at these pricks. You can be damn sure that if it were a Collingwood home game Eddie would be on the front foot and this game would be all over the press.

Goodness gracious me!!
People getting excited over selective quotations in "the Hun"

I mean ....

Quote:
Talkback callers and unofficial Blues websites have been scathing in their appraisal of coach Denis Pagan and several of his high-profile players this week

..... it's been going on alot longer than "this week". Then again, "scathing appraisals" re Carlton are pretty popular on "Big Footy" so maybe .....

Oh dear.....what's the point!! :?

Negative and "scathing" posts will always be reportable news to the "others", and treated as the opinions of all TC posters. :(

I didn't realise that it was my job as a 'Glass is really empty but I'm living on the chance of it being refilled over the next few years' poster to counter all the negative views on carlton forums. Its just not possible to do so, expecially when I disagree with so many of the points. I mean, how many times should I try to refute things? Indeed, the same things? Its just not my job to do it!

Of course fansites are going to be negative after a loss - fansites are for venting, discussion, analysis etc. and even if you're 4th and lose there's going to be an imbalance of positive v negative posters. And that's a very simple summary as well - not all negatives are negatives about everything and not all positives are positive about everything.

I am not a a Smorgan fan, but people need to remember that Journos are not in the business of qouting pople correctly. They give it the spin they want, and we know which spin the Hun is using in regard to Carlton.

Don't know what Smorgon said, but I wont take the Huns article as gospel.

I think they are in the business of quoting correctly Mikkey. It is the context of a quote you're talking about.

When it comes to certain journos and the Hun in particular I do not even trust them to qoute verbatim. But yes, most journos rely more on taking things out of context to get the spin they want. From personal experience I do not trust any journo.

Too much faith in Pagan IMO. Yes, we're undergoing a youth policy, if we are 1-4, we have to review why we're there - if you're going to support him, at least point out some areas where he can improve, with objective and independent advice.

I think he's trying to paint a "Carlton United" front - however, I think deep down, he knows there are serious problems with the coaching panel that have to be dealt with.

I mean, we all know who his source on here is....

Unofficial websites are a barometer for the voice of the average supporter to be heard.
Football is about passion so of course there is alot of kneejerking going on.
Take the emotion out of footy and the supporters and there is not a hell of alot left.

I reckon if i was trying to gauge how the supporters were feeling I wouldn't come here . We all to passionate with our views

I would conduct surveys at the ground both before and after the games to gauge what the average supporter is feeling.

Most people who would even bother to check out an internet site are usually not your average supporter their bordering on fanatical.

You can become quite obsessed with these sites

you underestimate the current climate.
This is the information age.. and more and more people want information.
Sure there are alot of people who are apathetic or dont understand technology.. but this is the future.

You cant dismiss unofficial websites..
Make no mistake...

more than likely a few lazy journalists who then pretend they are in touch with the 'mood' of the supporters.

Not sure what he has done wrong here
Backed the coach - endorsed the youth policy
called for patience - some here have also done the same thing
Agree with Synbad - clubs underestimate reach depth and coverage of internet and its forums and to ignore this as a method by which you can garner support - spread the message and gauge supporter opinion and critical issues is crazy and living in the dark ages

roughly 10,000 individuals visit this website regularly (at least once a month).

That is a large cross section of the supporter base, and probably an even larger proportion of members.

One day candidates for the board will realise this and directly speak to the members through the unnoficial sites. IMO if someone like Marcus Clarke had done this he would now be on the board.
